09 Matrix S
U.S version
2.4 liter engine
Multimode Auto Transmission
1200 miles now on vehicle
Like some others have written about, I too thought I might be having transmission problems. Mine were not hard downshifts, but very noticeable "hunting" between gears when going between 30-40 mph.
I had a talk with the Service Manager of the selling dealer her in Tyler, TX and he suggested I just give the adaptable transmission time to adapt to my driving style.
This seemed like a reasonable approach since my Matrix came in from another dealer with 235 miles on the odometer. Thus, I have no information as to how the vehicle was driven to put these miles on it.
After I drove the vehicle for another two weeks the transmission computer seems to have adapted to my style of driving and the "hunting" seems to have almost completely disappeared.
The Service Manager said they have had a few vehicles where the transmission was having a hard time adapting to the owner's driving and in those cases there is a procedure where the transmissions control computer is essentially rebooted and the vehicles start all over adapting to the driver's driving style.
Those of you who are having transmission problems and you have the multimode adaptive transmission you may want to mention this to your Toyota Service Department and see if this may be something that my help you.
