Alpine W505 + Blackbird II Install Question

I just ordered the Alpine W505 and Blackbird II, but I had a quick question about it. Does this setup still get hooked up to the VSS wire?
If not, how well does the navigation work (when the Blackbird II is docked) in cities with tall buildings and tunnels?
