What is the pencil?

Having had some experience with computer-aided drafting / drawing tools, it is very difficult to sketch, even with a stylus on a tablet, so it is very difficult to put initial thoughts on paper, as it were. It is difficult to erase and redraw. Worse yet, there is no real, immediate feedback.
