I think I have decided to look for a t-100 instead of a pickup. If I get one it willl be a 95 or newer with the 3.4 and 4x4 ext cab. How are the automatics in these? How do they do mileage wise compared to the 5spd? Any known issues with them that would keep me from buying one with auto? It will be a daily driver, and I will pull a small aluminum boat from time to time.. Thanks.

robiewp 02-10-2009, 10:57 PM my 97 gets between 19 and 21 strictly highway, and I can do that well over all if I drive very conservatively. On a recent trip from Maine to NY I got 19.5 going as close to 80 as traffic let me the whole way. I have dunlop street tires (this helps) and a cap (debatable).
4x4 3.4 automatic.
I've had no problems with the auto. 216k right now. Some people after really high millage have their flex plate crack, but this seems to be relatively rare...

the ext cab wasn't available in 95. 96 thru 98 only. Haven't calc'd my mileage yet, but there are other threads with tips on optimizing your MPG (replace oxygen sensors, tire inflation, etc. Good choice on going with the T.

The 1995 truck was available with an Xtra-cab. I remembering driving one when they first came out (in 95) and I have numerous 1995 literature with the 1995 T100 Xtracab.
The 3.4 came first and then several months later the Xtracab came along.

65riv 02-12-2009, 01:08 PM Cool, didn't know that about the 95. But then, I'm pretty new to the T (3 weeks) :D
Alan R McDaniel Jr 02-13-2009, 10:21 AM My 95 actually belonged to my oldest son for a while. I think he was making "How tough is a Toyota" commercials with it for most of the time he owned it. He sold it to me and I use it for parts for my 97 T100. It has saved me much more than the $2400 that I put into it. I intend to run my 97 for a long, long, long time.
There are some things that will not interchange. The 95 is a 5 spd and the 97 is Automatic. Other than that and those things associated with the transmission all parts are virtually interchangeable.

I have no problem finding them on craigslist, autotrader, or cars.com. Anything particular yer looking fer besides an ext cab and a 5-speed? What price range? Power package? Cruise? What kinda mileage? Any particular color? Where are you located? ;)
Central ohio.. Would prefer cruise, but can live without.. power package does not matter... Trying to keep under 170k miles.. Right now to buy from a indvidual my budget is under 6 grand..
BamZipPow 02-24-2009, 01:29 AM 1995 SR5 (http://huntington.craigslist.org/cto/1014630547.html) fer $5000...4x4, 160k, power package, cruise, alloy rims, tow hitch. Although...it's located on the East side of Ohio (near Pittsburgh).
Already talked to that guy.. You ought to see where he cut rust out of the cab, by where the bottom of the door touches, and put hvac tape over it.... Has rust on the bed, that is why he has the bushwacker fender flares.. I could have lived with that, but the cab, no way..
BamZipPow 02-24-2009, 04:19 PM What other states are you willing to travel to? Since yer in the rust belt...I'm gonna say that most of the T-100s yer gonna be looking at will probably be the same way. ;)
About six hours away (12 roundtrip) from zip code 43232.

Approx 163k. Not sure of the shape, but I know this one's been listed for at least 1.5 months.
btw, both above are automatics.
Good luck
65riv 02-25-2009, 12:12 AM forgot to mention. The second one is an ext cab. No mention in ad, but 4th VIN position of U indicates 4wd xtra cab. also, for future reference, if 7th position is a 2, it's a DX. if it's a 4, it's an SR5 (power windows, mirrors, locks, etc)
The white one, I have never talked to such a crappy salesman before.. The guy was an a-hole.. I think he sold it saturday.. The 98 has got some pretty bad body damage.. Like I said I have looking everywhere every day.. Found but one 5spd in decent shape..

Multiple angles of the interior, exterior, engine, bed, under body/frame. If it meets yer needs, then you can make arrangements to fly out there and inspect the truck, test drive, take it to a shop, make yer deal. You then can either have yer new truck shipped and you fly back or you drive it back home. Presto! :D

I might have found a good deal on a 95 auto, a souther truck.. Is there any main differences in a 95 compared to a 97, engine or body wise I should be worried about? This one has not rust at all, which is very good... Thanks..
robiewp 03-02-2009, 02:03 AM OBD II (diagnostics) started in 97, and the 95 and 96 3.4 v6'ers can't handle the super charger without significant changes to the fuel system. Both of these things have to do with the specific engine computer but don't have anything to do with performance / reliability. Other than that, though... a 3.4 5vz-fe is a 3.4 5vz-fe. As the tacomas, 4runners, t100s, and early tundras these 3.4s were used in hold out over time I think this may prove to be one of toyota's most reliable engines. I'd double check that it's a 3.4, though - I don't know if there were still some 3.0s floating around in '95.
Cheers,
Rob
It is a 3.4 for sure. That is the first thing I ask when I find a 95. With the auto, he is getting 20-21mpg. Do you think that is because of the earlier computer, or just maybe other factors, like his tires and topper maybe?

The earlier computer would not help it. I get that in my 97 with the topper, but slightly better without. The tires certainly can make a big difference... especially if they're too small and making the speedometer run fast. If the speedometer is spot on, a good road tire will get you more miles than an off road tire.
20-21 is easily attainable in a 3.4 4x4 auto if you drive conservatively and in the sweet spot, 45-65. One tank over the summer I got 24, but that was with a lot of engine-off coasting. I can easily get as low as 14mpg in the winter making short, hilly, trips around town. Point being it's all in how you drive. Unless there is something mechanically wrong, gas mileage with these cars is always driving style.
If easy on takeoffs and passing , but cruising around 70mph on the freeway, what do you think highway mileage would be?

I drove an F250 for a while that had manual hubs... there was also an "auto" option. I guess I've never looked too closely at how the hubs on the T work. When the vacuum system disengages the hubs, are you saying it's disengaging them at the differential, not the hub (meaning you're still turning the shaft, even when 4wd's off, making lower fuel efficiency)? If it's at the hub, aren't the stock ones as efficient as the manual ones? If it's at the differential, and not the hub, wouldn't "on" on the manual hubs be just like never having installed the manual hubs? If so, then seems like there's no disadvantage... I'd put a set on right away... but I really want that "auto" behavior when I let my wife drive it...

If yer looking fer extra gas mileage, manual hubs are the way to go. If you use the 4x4 most/all the time, then the ADD hubs that are on there now will do just fine. ;)

Best bet to use the Aisin brand...that's what Toyota used on the stock trucks. Don't remember the spline count...you'll have to do some digging. I think you can git them off the early trucks and 4runners. Spline count is very important... :D

One word.. RUST..
I ended up buying the 95 auto I posted pictures of.. Amazing how little rust is on the underbody.. Just on the bolts and a little surface rust here and there.. Ended up getting it for $4500... What can you put on the bolts, to protect them from rust? Something better than wd-40? Thanks..
65riv 03-08-2009, 08:59 PM When needing penetrating oil to work on the exhaust, I bought PB Blaster and read the can. It says "stops rust and corrosion" and "does not evaporate". Sprayed the frame members (which were clean anyway) and one of the lines coming off the radiator whihc was starting to show some rust. Thought about using it on bolts as well, but nt sure if that's kosher, cuz it's a penetrating oil. But it also says to tap the bolts if you want to loosen them. So I'm not sure whether NOT tapping the bolts after spraying might be a good rust inhibitor. Like you, any thoughts are welcome.
