[sPooN] aE86 08-14-2001, 09:05 PM hey.. umm guys.. got some questions.. i just got a race series magnaflow muffler.. it's 6" long w/ 2.25" inside..
oh yeah.. this is on an ae86
dunno y but i dun feel gains at all!! i pick up alot slower and i set off alarms everywhere!! but.. however it feels more free flowing at higher speeds..
i knew i'd lose some low-end power but didn't know i'd lose soo much..
what can i do to improve my pick up anyone?
would a silencer work?
Thanks
Ken
Jzs147-RR 08-14-2001, 09:15 PM What size is the tip because a silencer will help low end power but will cause high end loss.I got one and it only takes off about 5 hp.
[sPooN] aE86 08-14-2001, 09:34 PM i think the tip's like 2.25 from the inside..?
it feels like i pick up soo slow now.. and it's sooo damn loud!!
Ken
Jzs147-RR 08-14-2001, 11:01 PM Well mesure it and get a silencer it will help for city driving and when your on the highway take it out and save gas.Im not sure if Apexi makes one that size but i got one on my 115mm tip. http://www.my-camry.cityslide.com/i/7/70/709/7096/70964/709640/Dscf0018.jpg

[sPooN] aE86 08-15-2001, 07:55 AM so i'd save gas w/ the silencer off?
if the silencer doesn't help me.. i'm thinking of changing to a smaller hole.. hehe that'd help rite?
or another way to get my low end power back would be to get a more powerful engine?.. gimme a yr.. then my 4agze's gonna kick! haha
Ken
Jzs147-RR 08-15-2001, 09:28 AM The silencer if it fits will help for sure when doing city driving but for fuel savings a claer tip is better. But remeber you got a small engine so it will not even show up that much on your gas bill.
varietta 08-15-2001, 12:27 PM Ken,
All that money for nothing? And now you have to get a silencer with the exhaust?
What? Don't tell me you're going to attempt a 4A-GZE swap on your AE86. It's not easy to do! Andrew (trueno92) can tell you about it.
Oh well, see you this weekend. Where is my Initial D? Hehehe
Kevin
varietta 08-15-2001, 12:54 PM Ken, also did you ask Xee about the driver side door that he has for sale? He says its mint. Oh well, I think it has rust on it... from the blue one.
Any news on the head swap?
Thanks,
Kevin
goodcookiedrift 08-15-2001, 02:00 PM ken, get a resonator put on before the pipe goes over the axel. a muffler will not give you substantial power gains, if any at all. Toy'd have to do the whole exhaust...cat back 2.25. you are using stock piping?
a gze is not stupendously hard to put in, provided you have access to a hoist and the proper tools. the wiring might be a little tricky and the vacuum lines could be confusing at first. and the piping might be an obstacle. other than that, just use the flywheel from your original 4age, you could use the clutch too, but i would be inclined to buy an after market one seeing that you don't want to go back in there....especially when you find the stock one starts slipping on-boost.

SpectraBlueCam 08-15-2001, 06:18 PM Welcome to the board Ken! Hope to see you around some time!
Almost any mod you put on the car will be a trade off. You can't have your cake and eat it too. In this case, you will lose some low end. But the gains at the top end is worth it. You will feel the low end loss more if you have a full mandrel bend exhaust as well. The losing of some backpressure is caused by the larger diameter pipe and/or mandrel bends, coupled with no resonator or high flow resonator and a high low muffler. But the top end gains are worth it IMHO. A properly tuned exhaust system should give you 5-8 HPs.
Hope that helps.
[sPooN] aE86 08-15-2001, 11:46 PM hehe wow.. thanks for all the response guys!
my 4agze swap should be next summer.. if nothing else breaks down.. and nick that's a good point there.. i'll definately look for a clutch n save some labour..
yea.. I got a new oem exhaust.. dun even know y the guys got me it tho..
so a resonator will surely give me more power?? there's a resonator that was on the 3000GT and if i put that on... would i be feeling better gains?
about the silencer.. i'm just going to use it on the streets but on the track i'll take it off since i'll be on my high end most the time..
varietta! i'll try to get ur initial d to u sat.. or if not monday or tuesday? that cool? hehe my whole car's all patched up now! no more rust.. well at least for now..
well anyways..
thanks for all ur posts guys!
Ken
goodcookiedrift 08-16-2001, 02:24 PM bo resonator will bot gice you any power..if anything, you might lose some although i highly doubt it. However, it will cut down on the loudness depending on how large the resonator is.

Rolla GT-S 12-05-2002, 09:53 PM i got the regular stainless steel muffler. at first it was quite and i felt torqe loss. Then i took out the air silencer and ran hose to turnsignal for cold ram air and added magnecor wire, it was then that I felt the torque gained some.
Try to increase the air flow, that seemed to help me. I also replaced the cat with Carsound hi-flow cat and torque is way better now and it now sets off alarms too. It made my engine run cooler also.
I love the magnaflow, the sound, quality, and cheaper than most too. Don't worry, it does add horsepower, which you should notice at high speed. You can regain torque with other mods.
project trueno 12-05-2002, 09:58 PM you dug up an old old post......i don't think [spoon] AE86 is around here anymore!!
but thanks for bumping it waaaaaay back up, good info
Lafora 12-05-2002, 10:01 PM i got a magnaflow. it works.
that's about all i could say about it.
the cat doens't tho :D
Flashmn 12-06-2002, 01:20 AM Thats cuz changing a muffler wont give you HP. The middle muffler in toyotas is straight through, so once you pop the last muffler into something else than a straight through, the middle muffler wont work, because theres too little back pressure = VERY LOUD NOISE.
varietta 12-06-2002, 06:08 AM I was just going to say, WHAT??? "Ken bought another AE86?"
Yeah, this is an ooollld post! Hey look, I still surf the board .

Rolla GT-S 12-06-2002, 09:01 PM that's a whole debate right there, some say you need backpressure, while others say it ain't good at all.
For the cat, my old original was probably clogged, that why I felt gains. I just got my emissions test and I was a little dissapointed. I was expecting it to be super low since i got the new cat and put in a new bosch oxygen sensor, maybe high-flow cats don't do well at lowering emmisions, oh well. Better than the last one's.
I was sorta afraid to get the magnaflow because i tried flowmaster and that cheap thing was loud and ugly. The interior noise was horrible!
oh, but the magnaflow! I think i'll use them forever, i can't feel or hear much interior noise even though it's loud outside. very good for it's price range.
project trueno 12-06-2002, 09:29 PM Hey look, I still surf the board .

:o :o :o holy shit you're alive!!!
kevin i know you're busy and all, but you DO have a X'mas break right?
varietta 12-06-2002, 09:39 PM Yeah, I finally get a break! Although I'll be staying in residence to do some work and practice on my drawings...
I visit the board once in a while. I just don't post much. :0
How's everything? I guess I just missed another meet.. damn... again
Lafora 12-06-2002, 10:44 PM no worries..u didn't miss much
