IAC Problem

A while ago, I took apart the throttle body and IAC on my 1997 3.4L T-100 4wd as was suggested for high idle that dropped only when revving the engine. It's been frustrating trying to get the idle to idle instead of staying at 15K when coasting in neutral or at a stop. I cleaned the MAF, throttle body and IAC, put on a new gasket at the throttle body and a new rubber gasket where the IAC joins the throttle body. I started the truck cold and it took 5 min to come to idle (800rpm). However, once I take it for a drive, the idle sticks at 13-15K when coming to a stop. I rev it and it drops to 800. Still no idle relief. Prior to putting everything back together, I hooked up the IAC to a 12v battery and got the roller to open some and close when disconnecting power. How much is it supposed to open with power applied...in other words when do I know if it's time to replace it? or can anyone think of another reason for the high idle?

Try taking the motor off and rotating the IAC valve shaft with yer fingers. You shouldn't have to take the throttle body off to do this test. The electric motor is held on with 2 philips screws. :D

Formula 1 motor in that thing? ;)

And now for a more helpful comment. have you looked at the TPS ?

Sorry about the typo....I meant idle sticks at 1500+ rpm

How will I know if the TPS is bad?

I'm with ya. Seem like TPS is defective. IAC wouldn't behave like that after it's warmed up. Get a book and it'll tell you how to test it. You'll need test meter around $40 will do.

TPS is tested with a multi-meter, you'll need a service manual for the numbers of what it should spec out at.

I'll try to find a service book (library maybe?) or is there anybody out there with a book that is able to tell me the multimeter test specs for the leads on the TPS....?

You can often find shop manuals at the library, not sure if TPS specs would be in there or if you need a FSM.

Throttle fully closed - VTA to E2 = 0.2 - 5.7K ohms
Throttle fully open - VTA to E2 = 2.0 - 10.2K ohms
----------------------- VC to E2 = 2.5 - 5.9K ohms

E2 is the top termainal of the TPS connector
VC is the middle terminal
VTA is the bottom terminal

Gee wheeze, it only cost $20. You'll spend more than that on gas and beside it has more important info in there like "how to change motor oil".

I would still pull the electrical motor on the IAC and physically rotate that valve shaft while spraying some cleaner through the port. It's highly unlikely the electrical motor has gone bad...it's yer call... :D

Great info folks, thanks a lot for all the input.
Forgive me if this seems like a dumb question...
Throttle open- I take that to mean manually opening the throttle where the cable connects to the throttle body with the engine off?

Ok, long hiatus...back home again.
Finally checked the TPS and got no ohm readings on any of the leads. Hopefully I did it right. Disconnected the wire harness and tested the exposed leads on the TPS. Nothing. Went to Carquest and paid $47 for a new TPS, installed it and started engine. It settled to a nice 800 idle. Took it for a spin and the idle kept sticking at 1300-1500 when coasting or in between gears when shifting. Do I need to disconnect battery to reset computer? Any ideas/suggestions?

Maybe yer TB is worn out? I remember someone having a problem where the throttle plate shaft was worn and allowing extra air to seep in causing a high idle...you'll probably have to do a search here or at www.4x4wire.com on their forums... ;)

How many miles?

umpqua123
08-24-2009, 12:42 AM
This T100 has 185K miles on it. Someone else said it might be the sleeve that the throttle pin is housed within might need to be rebuilt/replaced as the pin might be sticking. I thought not and kept looking for other solutions.

How does tapping the accelerator get the idle to drop when in neutral (at a stop or while between gears shifting)?

I'd say take the TB back off and give it another go at cleaning...you could even cycle the TB and see if it feels like it's sticking... ;)

This will be the 4th time I'll be taking the TB off and cleaning it. I have used a toothbrush and TB cleaner spray. Had some black crud flow out 1st time. Plate seems to slam shut tight with the spring tension. I've taken off the IAC and sprayed and brushed that too. Disconnected the solenoid under it and cleaned it out too. Ran 12v to it and saw that it still turned the shaft open and closed.

I'm pretty frustrated at my lack of success finding the culprit. Am I cleaning these parts improperly? Not looking forward to buying a new IAC or TB...

Just in case it is the throttle cable... ;)
