ChipNOreo 08-09-2009, 06:37 AM Hello, I just got a T100 and I love it. The previous owner took good care of it and did routine matinance. It has a fresh oil change and new spark plugs. I just want to give the engine (240k) a good cleaning, I think it deserves it :).
Anyway so on my agenda so far I have:
clean the throttle body
flush the radiator
install a new o2 sensor
I have limited mechanical experiance but I think I am clear on how to do the above items
I also saw a thread on here (I think it was here) for flushing the power steering. I would like to do thy too but was a little hazy on what exactly to do and on where all the parts are. But it seems like a good thing to do.
Also, fuel injector cleaner: just dump some in the gas tank? Or is there a better way to do it?
Is there anything else that I could clean up that would not be too difficult?
Any advice, links, and especially pictures would be greatly appreciated :)
Thank you!
xsvtoyz 08-09-2009, 08:30 AM do a search for seafoam on here there is a procedure I have not tried. I run 2 cans of seafoam every 3 months in the tank and it keeps mine purring. change the rear diff fluid and the trans fluid if its a manual or have the auto flushed if thats what it is. adjust the rear brakes get a grease gun and hit every zerk you can find.
and congratz on the new ride.
knj27 08-09-2009, 05:45 PM Seafoam into the brake booster. Try Redline SI-1 in the tank, chemically it is a much more effective injector cleaner.
BamZipPow 08-10-2009, 09:27 PM Stick with Auto-RX (http://www.auto-rx.com)... ;)
ChipNOreo 08-12-2009, 05:00 AM After cleaningbthe throttle body, my truck seems to idle higher. I don't remeber the normal idle speed before I cleaned it, but it bow normally idles aroud 1000 rpm. What is the normal idle for after it has been running for a minute or so?
knj27 08-12-2009, 05:03 AM The FSM spec on 4runner w/ 5vz says that idle should be 700 +/- 50. Don't know of an online manual for a T100 so I can't check to be sure, but I would bet it's pretty much the same.
So if it's at 1000 with the motor fully warmed up that's about 250 too high. But off course it will idle higher before it gets hot.
BamZipPow 08-12-2009, 12:46 PM Did you take the throttle body off to clean it? I'm gonna venture you got some crud loose and into the IAC (idle air control) valve... :(
Guess you'll have to clean that, too. ;)
ChipNOreo 08-12-2009, 05:03 PM I guess I will add that to my cleaning list. Well, the cleaner the better. :) Excuse my ignorance on the matter, but the ICV is the thing behind the throttle body going into the engine (if that makes sense). I did a google search on it and that is what i have come up with.
Thanks for the advice :) I am learning a lot.
BamZipPow 08-12-2009, 08:28 PM The IAC valve is attached to the bottom of the throttle body. Do a search on here and you should be able to see a piccie of what it looks like.
ChipNOreo 08-13-2009, 12:09 AM Well, i took the whole throttle body and idle air control valve off and cleaned it all off and it is idling slightly lower but still high :( Any more ideas?
Also, the small tube that attaches to my air intake hose (is that what its called?) seems really loose. Is it supposed to be like that or should i replace that? (Also, what is it called? Kinda hard to go to the parts store and ask for "a small tube thing" ;))
BamZipPow 08-13-2009, 02:25 AM Piccies would help here...really. ;)
You mean this hose (http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_1998_TOYOTA_T100_VCK11L-CRSSKA_1703.3.html?hl=17341F)?
On my 98 T-100...there's a plastic adapter...I just ziptied it around the entry point so it would be tighter... :D
BamZipPow 08-14-2009, 12:32 AM Flushing the power steering is rather easy. You don't even have to start the engine up... ;)
ChipNOreo 08-17-2009, 04:52 AM Yes, that hose! (i just uploaded a picture and everything... but you beat me to it :)) So i should get a zip tie or something to secure it a little better then? Would that make the oil pressure go up? Mine seems a little low. On my 91 pickup it would sit between the first and second line when i was driving and below the first when idling. On my T100 it rarely gets above the first line even when driving.
Idle is still high :( It has come down a little just from driving it :S could i have knocked a sensor or something when i cleaned it?
Again, thanks for all the help :) I know i have a ton of questions
knj27 08-17-2009, 04:59 AM If it was a bit loose you could have possibly bumped the TPS. I don't know how much that would really affect idle speed though, and you'd have other driveability problems if it was significantly out of adjustment.
ChipNOreo 08-17-2009, 05:15 AM It does not seem to be having any issues other than the idle speed. Well other than my piece of crap right tail pipe falling off on the pot hole filled roads of Alaska.... Oh well, that was next on my list of things to spend some $$$ on anyway :) But i dont think that has anything to do with the throttle body. While the idle is now being weird, the accelerator is MUCH smoother now though.
knj27 08-17-2009, 05:17 AM How high is it still idling when its totally warmed up?
ChipNOreo 08-17-2009, 05:30 AM Right around 1000 rpm. +-100 Previously it had not been going below 1000 at all
ChipNOreo 08-18-2009, 04:51 AM You mean this hose?
What is that hose called? Or does it not have a name?
Flushing the power steering is rather easy. You don't even have to start the engine up...
I have your post printed out and plan to do it as some point in the near future :) One question though, what do you mean by "continue to purge the power steering system"? Does that mean repeat the process or turn the wheel back and fourth or...? Its probably pretty obvious but im learning and since i can ask the author i figured i would :D

Yes...just keep turning the wheels lock to lock until you see clean/clear fluid come out. If you don't put it up on stands, do it over some dirt/sand so you don't grind yer tires out on the cement/asphalt... ;)
ChipNOreo 08-19-2009, 09:50 PM Any more thoughts on the high idle? :(
BamZipPow 08-19-2009, 11:38 PM I'm still guessing the IAC valve...did you physically rotate the shaft to make sure it had the full range? Did you replace the gaskets (IAC to TB and TB to air plenum)? ;)
Could be a loose vacuum hose, too.
BamZipPow 08-19-2009, 11:40 PM What is that hose called? Or does it not have a name?
Um...according to the ToyoDIY diagram...
"HOSE, AIR, NO.1"
:D
ChipNOreo 08-20-2009, 09:43 PM haha, sweet name for that hose ;-)
I did not change the gaskets. (cheap/lazy?) I guess that will be my next thing to do. School is starting in a few days though. Going to significantly cut into my truck time :(
BamZipPow 08-21-2009, 05:36 PM You can go ahead and pay the $13 fer that specialized hose or just git some 1/2" ID hose and stick it on there...like this!

Of course I cleaned up the inside of the metal tube...it was pretty gunked up. :(
ChipNOreo 09-02-2009, 11:18 PM I went looking for new TB and IAC gaskets today... and was informed my truck does not have a throttle body :D haha. And then was told I can't get the IAC gasket without a new IAC... After I took the guy out to my truck and showed him the throttle body. Even though i can get both from the dealer for $15. That really seems a bit much to me....
knj27 09-03-2009, 04:00 AM Two gaskets from the stealer for $15 bucks can be the norm unfortunately...
"Doesn't have a throttle body" :disappoin

luc_b 09-06-2009, 07:04 PM I was having a really low idle every now and then and only when it was warm. It was really strange and totally random. I'd go weeks without it doing it and then it would happen all the time. By low idle I mean like 450 - 500.. I'd have to give it gas to keep from stalling.
When I took the TB off and cleaned the IAC it was really gunky. got it all cleaned up and put it back and the idle went up to like 1500 and even higher when warm. After I drove it for like 20 minutes it went to normal. Pretty sure the computer has to reset itself to adjust how much air to let in through the bigger opening. May just need to take it for a good cruise...
ChipNOreo 09-10-2009, 05:21 PM I got the new gaskets for $5 total :) got them on... still high :(. It has been weeks now. My brother cleaned his TB at the same time and he had high rpms for a while. But they are back down in the 800 range now and mine has gone up again :S. Could i have knocked some crud onto my MAF sensor?

It wouldn't take that much/long to check and see... ;)
Are you sure you hooked up the IAC back up? ;)
Shoot some close up picces of the engine bay... :D
