ken b 03-14-2004, 08:53 PM so whats the idea have almost 2000 miles on my xb and cant get over 26 to the gallon. Anyone have any ideas how to get what its said to get 30-35.Mostly highway driving and not excessive on the peddle. Any one out there keeping up with this? let me know
Warped 03-14-2004, 09:22 PM What's your load like? Do you haul stuff a lot?
rastafarm 03-15-2004, 03:16 PM I just filled up for the first time and also got about 28 mpg...
ken b 03-18-2004, 08:46 PM no load 80%of the time its me how is your milage?maybe car has to breakin
fourasians 03-19-2004, 01:34 AM I've got about 4000 miles and have NEVER gotten over 29 mpg!!
DavidB 03-20-2004, 10:28 AM Do you guys by chance all have Manual trannys?
I tried both, and when I saw that the Manual in 5th was turning over 4000 RPM @ 80, and the Auto with O/D ON was turning only 3200 @ 80, that said it all mileage-wise. I bought an xB Auto, and I'm getting well over 30 mpg on the highway with about 500 miles so far. Around town, more like 27.
Perhaps a 5th gear switch-out for lower RPMs?
D.
cpharshaw 06-07-2004, 09:17 PM Maybe the car needs to be broken in a little more to get maximum gas mileage.
98CamryLE 06-07-2004, 11:08 PM EPA estimates are always a bit lofty. That is because they are based on concepts and testing from several decades ago, and do not take into account modern vehicles. There was a great article explaining why EPA estimates are off and how the whole system needs to be updated in a recent (within 3 months) issue of either Motor Trend or CarandDriver.
jhbhatia 06-08-2004, 12:40 PM You have a heavy right foot...shift early and don't speed. But that goes with any car...I think a few dudes from www.scionlife.com suggested that as well...
megasms 09-05-2004, 09:16 PM some things that make gas mileage not so great:
heavy acceleration
hard breaking
going over 60 miles an hour (sucks yes)
my xa gets about 33 miles in city driving and around 40 on the highway. (i check it every time i fill up on gas... i'm a dork and i cary a calculater in my car just for that purpose) it has almost 6000 miles on it... i'm pretty satisfied.
Piddy 09-07-2004, 11:37 PM I wish i could get 20mpg :(
XB~Blondie 09-08-2004, 03:04 PM I'm getting really good mileage right now, about 29 (I've got about 1600 miles total) but I rarely go on the highway, maxing my speed @ about 50 mph on my way to and from work. I have the manual, the auto is such a dog I couldn't justify going with that tranny. I'm getting an intake system put on and switching to synthetic oil on my first change and I'm hoping that helps out a lot too.
sunshinestate 09-12-2004, 12:39 AM I guess im lucky so far my XB got 30mpg on first tank and 32mpg on second tank , i have manual trans and i broke it in by running different speeds and not one continious speed ps i drive it very hard and it sees high rpms in every gear all the time ....
Shorty3788 09-16-2004, 05:02 PM maybe it's cause the xB is just about the least arodynamic object in existance except for the parachute. as for the xA, no clue.

SCIONTIFIC 09-22-2004, 10:19 PM JUST BOUGHT AN XB TONIGHT, SO I CANT SAY ABOUT MY MILEAGE.... BUT A FRIEND THAT JUST BOUGHT ONE AND DRIVES HI WAY EVERY DAY
IS GETTING 36 MPG.... SCIONTIFIC

The xB actually has a low drag coefficient. It is pretty aerodynamic. One thing to check is the tire pressure. Bump it up to 38 psi and see what happens.
fritchdog 10-02-2004, 02:19 PM I have close to 1000 miles on my Xb. It's manual and I got 30mpg, 30.5, then 31.3 just the last time. I was hoping for better, since I got 27 (a max of 29.5 shifting at 2500 for a week just to see) with my mit eclipse spyder GS. I do, however, a good amount of highway driving and avg 70mph. I do know you must break a car in before getting your best mileage.
Keeping tires properly inflated is probably the key to the disparity in this forum. Even a brand new car can have tires lose air if sitting on the lot a while. Especially if the car is shipped from a different location (var in temp accross the U.S). I would hope dealers check these things, but who knows. Plus this car comes with low-profile tires. I have no clue (these are my first low-profiles), but maybe they are more sensitive to low pressure.
When acelerating I usually shift at 3k in the city and 4-5k on open highways. I also anticipate red lights and try to minimize my braking. I do, however, downshift most of the time when stopping which would hurt gas mileage but save your brakes. Many times I'll stick it in neutral and coast to the red light.
Also, the A/C will eat your gas. It is summer, at least in Florida  and that could make a big diff. I do notice there is very little to no lose in HP w/ the A/C is on in this car. That is a good thing, but probably means it is eating more of its own gas and not taking away from the engine's. I have no tech knowledge to support this theory, but past 2 new vehicals (both Mitsubishi's) lost tons of power w/ A/C on, but littly affect on gas mileage. This car loses little to no power, so maybe it is using more gas to support both the A/C and to maintain the same HP.
P.S. - Try to occasionally put aside the calcuator and have fun. Remember, you're driving a Scion Xb. ;)
diamente 10-04-2004, 03:25 PM how are you guys calculating mpg? Do you take the number of miles the car has run from the odometer and take the number of gallons you fill in the tank and divide them?

Actually. Their gas milage is pretty good for a box. I mean they are like a "aerodynamic" hummer. They can actually get more than 10 miles per gallon!!
But i guess MrQ told me that they are curved at every corner and stuff which makes it more aerodynamic and gives good MPG.
fritchdog 10-05-2004, 11:06 PM Hey just filled her up again...sqeaked into the 32 mpg range. :banger:
Filled up w/10.4 gallons after going 333 miles. It does appear to be getting better. My variables haven't change either...same driving style and still using A/C the same amount. .......Where the hell is winter in Florida? i can't wait. :dunno:
Michris1948 10-14-2004, 08:16 AM Hve you checked your odometer? I found that mine is off by more than 5 % and is getting worse. I have a 2005 xB with 3k on it. Next time you are on the Highway for an extended period, set the trip meter to zero at a certain milemarker, then check it after 40 or 50 miles. There should be a few tenths difference. BTW, even with the odometer error, I am averaging over 32 mpg.
Compuwiz 10-28-2004, 05:24 PM I get 23 per mile with my avalon :disappoin
TrafficInLA 11-03-2004, 05:21 PM I get about 26-30 mpg (miles/pump gallon method). I drive mostly highway and have an auto.
mrlaypo 11-04-2004, 03:13 PM i used to drive all the time with all windows down and got 28 mpg consistently. but since i bought a set of window visors and started driving with my windows cracked only a couple inches, ive been getting 32-35. thats mostly on streets and heavy freeway traffic. i filled up 9.8 gallons yesterday after driving 333 miles. my best was 351 on 10 gallons. :D
milaevo 11-07-2004, 11:24 PM Not to be rude but if you read the little window sticker the "30" mpg is an average the fine print typically below it states something like 26-34mpg. It's all in driving habits.
2-ZZ scion Xa 11-11-2004, 02:33 AM when i still ad the 1NZ in my Xa it went between bakersfield ca and vegas alot afer about 6000 miles it started to loosen up i always got 36+ MPG with a cold air and a FULL exhaust not just the axel back and that was running 80+ mph the whole way with a few major climbs on the way
just give it time and break it in right once she loosens up milage should imptove alot
shrktank 11-11-2004, 08:27 PM I have about 1000 miles on my XB and thus far I am getting 31-35 mpg. I have an automatic and most of my mileage is highway commuting
tCshamgar 11-11-2004, 08:46 PM Dont expect to drive off the lot getting exactly what the sticker says you should get (in gas mileage)
Not only is break-in a factor but of course driving style, speed limits, and tire pressure.
Its a good habit to check your tire pressure when you fill up. Someone mentioned upping the air pressure. This will reduce the force requried to turn the wheel. Thus reducing the amount of work the motor has to do to push the car.
The xB is way too small to be affected that much by wind resistance. Take for instance much larger vehicles ... SUV's and others which are much larger in scale and have much worse fuel consumption. Experiment with a couple of these things. If that doesn't work. Try modifications to the intake (air filter, throttle body-spacer, etc)
good luck.
Tommy Tran 12-09-2004, 07:26 PM I also anticipate red lights and try to minimize my braking. I do, however, downshift most of the time when stopping which would hurt gas mileage but save your brakes. Many times I'll stick it in neutral and coast to the red light.
Actually if downshifting to slow the vehicle it runs quite a bit leaner than if idling(such as in neutral coasting to a light) if you dont want to downshift just dont stick it in neutral just let off the gas and coast in the gear you are in... thats how auto trannys "salvage" gas mileage if you notice it never goes to "idle level" rpms while you are braking... it stays up but you hardly feel any "engine braking" cause its in its top gear when you let off the gas.
Peace
braddog0128 12-18-2004, 10:20 PM I have an Xb I have 11,200 miles on it lol, been to florida and back twice (I live in ohio) and yes gas milage does get better, however, and a BIG however at that, Ive changed the oil at 2500 miles with synthetic, theres synthetic oil in the manual gearbox, and in city driving i usually do not even eclipse 2000 rpm, unless i hit 40 in 5th gear lol. I drive 20 miles to work everyday, all highway, and I do 65 mph. I get about 34-36 mpg. Interestlingly enough I get the same or more in the city. I've noticed something strange though, After about 10k miles of driving my low end torque seemed to spike. granted I have a drop in performance filter, and use all synthetics this has been a pleasant surprise. I keep my rpms very low and observed the acceleration improve drastically. If anyone has experienced this please let me know. By the way on my trip to florida I tried something, I put 40 psi in my tires (scion calls for like 30, tires MAX is 44) and the milage was GREAT... I averaged in the ballpark of 40 mpg @ 70-75 mph on the 1,000 mile trip, so keep in mind this cold time of year to keep the tire pressure up.
