me and two buddies went around looking at cars today, and when we finally got to toyota, i knew what car i wanted to look at and mabye test drive: the corolla xrs. i got in there and the lady and the front desk asks us if we need anything and i said i was looking for information on the corolla xrs. she looks over at a salesman sitting nearby and he says they don't have one and that there's basically no info out there for them to the dealerships other than it has the 2zz and it's gonna be around $18-19k. other than that, they said they're not gonna stock any and that they're only gonna come in when they're ordered by someone.

after all the commercials i've seen on tv, i figured they'd be out in dealerships by now. anyone here work at a dealership and know when they're supposed to start coming in? have they started taking orders yet?

We've gotten about 5 of them and sold 3 of them. Call around they're out. Awesome car to drive. I like driving it better than the tC.

i've already seen 6 or 7 on the street, and about 10 at the largest dealer we have here in Sacramento.

I have a lot of those on the lots and a lot of people are buying them. I drove it 2 times and loved every bit of it. It is a sweet car and hitting the lift is a bash. I am trading my 04 Corolla S for an XRS soon.

wow...toyota's only sports car is the XRS. Don't let them come out with AWD for it, it'll be over for the Evo eventually

If they are gonna make it awd, they better do a serious engine upgrade first.

i think they will since Evo's selling so well stateside, as long as the XRS puts out some great sales numbers

nah, it'd be cheaper to bring over the caldina than to cmopletely remake the corolla to accomodate awd.

wow, now i REALLY want to test drive one. i figured they'd be pretty bad ass. everyone is gonna think you're some kind of dork driving a corolla and then you smoke their (insert ricer car name here).

it doesn't need to be awd, just rwd. i mean, aren't there other cars out there that have less power and are rwd?

That is what makes it so fun, but it sounds nothing like a Corolla. It has a sweet sports motorbike like sound especially at 8000 (Toyota built the 2zz engine in collaboration with Yamaha Motorcycles co.) RPM that gives it away it is not your regular-joe Corolla. I have read some guy who smoked a prelude with the Corolla XRS and the Prelude guy could not get over it.

oh man - I love this car - i just picked it up tonight I have to try so hard not to take it up the hot cam! it's the motor has 3 definate zones - 0-4 is meh 4-6500 is sporty 6500 on up is nutz.

my only complaint so far is that they did NOT match the lights inside - it has the electrolumenescent (OPTITRON in toyota speak) gages which are fine but its got like a 1980 quartz clock in green and all the lights to the right (for the radio et.al.) are green it looks really messed up like they just threw it all toghether and never bothered to try it at night. that and the back seat does not fold down...

Odd that lift hits at 6500. I'm guessing the 05 Matrix XRS is the same.

It starts at 6200 in my 03 Matrix XRS. So do the 04 Matrix XRS as well as the Celica GTS'. :p:

What's the redline in the Corolla XRS?

TOcorolla
07-31-2004, 12:28 AM
what happens when you hit the redline?

silver04rollas
07-31-2004, 01:02 AM
The rev limiter cuts off the fuel. The red line on the Corolla XRS is 8300 RPMs. Although, the lift officially at 6000 RPM, but the detuned second generation 2ZZ has a bit subtle transition in the cam changeover phase because of the thick midrange torque that the Celica GT-S and the pre 2005 Matrix had ( They have a gutless feel below 6000 rpm).

Next Gen Corolla could be. I think the JDM Corolla comes with AWD.

Are 2ZZ's built by Yamaha?

silver04rollas
07-31-2004, 11:24 PM
It is built by Toyota, but Yamaha collaborated with Toyota to share their expertise on how motorcycle engines are built (since Toyota has never built motorcycle engines) and assisted them with the design and development of the engine. Yamaha knows very well how to pack a lot of power in a tiny engine through their motorcycle engines. As for the 2ZZ GE engine 100 HP per liter of displacement is impressive, but for a company like Honda, building the K20 engine for RSX Type S is something they can do easily since they originally are a motorcycle building company.

yes, JDM corollas have awd as an option, but i think only in the 1NZ and 2NZ powered versions. As for next gen corollas, it'll still be on teh same platform, they just changed the platform for 03, they woudln't change ti again this soon.

only the head of teh 2zz is built by yamaha, while the block is built by toyota.

supposedly there is a transition at 6000 but it hits hard 6500-6800 on up. the redline is around 82-8300 rpm.

as for awd the real problem I have with that idea is this: in something like this car awd is going to add additional powertrain losses and a good system will still add a few hundred pounds. so now you are getting less power to the pavement you are also no longer talking about 2650lbs you are talking about 3000-3100 lbs. At that point a few things happen, first a 1.8 liter w/ this kind of hp and torque is completley un-viable as a sports car, you need 200hp 200 ft-lbs blowing fuel economy. you've also gone and blown the 20k barrier by 3-4 grand. And all of the added mass means poorer handling and again lower fuel consumption.

i think the thing the corolla brings to the market that no one else (save mazda) really has now is that the xrs is a killer little sports car with a great ride and handling package, it is a toyota so reliability is a given, it still acheives 30+ mpg and it is crazy safe. That is something that is not really offered by the competition at a sub 20k price...

wow, ever since the xrs came out I want one more and more, it's a toss up for me between that and the mazda 3 though, we're looking for a car and the xrs seems awesome in performace...it's just that the styling isn't that great for me. I guess the engine makes up for that though.

I am trading my 04 Corolla S for an 05 XRS. I drove an XRS right after a Mazda 3. There was simply no comparison between the two cars. They were geared towards different customers. XRS with the 6 speed manual and lift at 6000 RPM was a screamer. It gave out a lot of attitude and the sound of the car changes after 6000 rpm with a deeper exhaust growl and then when you would bring the engine to cruising speeds, it would have an alter ego of a quiet normal Corolla with respectable low end torque. Mazda 3 on the other hand had impressive low end torque, but as soon as you pick up some speed, the heavy curb weight starts to show ( over 2800 lbs ) and the XRS is atleast 0.6 second faster than the 3. Although, the main strengths of Mazda lie in the fact that you get more features than the Corolla XRS such as the, steering mounted controls, 6 cd in dash standard and heated seats. Performance wise, 3 does not compare with the XRS.

i see i see, ya i love the mazda 3 for it's looks, the corolla isn't ugly, it's just in my opinion not as great looking as the 3, but the xrs has the edge for me w/ it's performance, plus i heard many good things about it's handling too. I thought it was yamaha who did the suspension and toyota just de tuned the engine. i heard that yamaha enginered a strut tower brace for the xrs?

I would say go to a local dealership and look at the XRS. With dark smoked headlights, lowered stance and larger 16 inch rims, it looks a lot better than the Corolla S. Although, personally I hate the chopped-off rear deck of the Mazda 3 and the way it stick up in the air. The front is nice though.

I just picked up my xrs about 3 weeks ago, and pretty much its only competition was the mazda 3 s. What i liked about the mazda were the looks, and the dash guages. What I didnt like was the torquey ride, uncomfortable seats, and the dealership wouldnt come down off the price very much. The 3 was the first car I test drove and I figured I would just bite the bullet and get one because I dont like Focuses or Sentras, until I drove the XRS. This car is amazing. It has a comfortable and roomy interior, but cool racing style seats. It's handling in stop and go traffic is great. I could stand a bit more torque, but the top end and "lift" beyond 6500 rpm's is great. My fave parts have been smoking a prelude on the highway and a tricked out focus that couldnt handle a curvy road. The XRS has the best of both worlds and lots of potential for mods.

I have been driving my XRS for 8 months now and the best bang for the buck. Sport Compact National Magazine called XRS "the biggest surprise sport compact of the year" - they were not joking.

BTW, the electronic optitron red on black guages are the best in it's class.

I have had 2 XRS one was a 2005 that was totaled when I hit a deer. The one I have now is the 2006 XRS. I put a performance muffler and a high flow air filter. I love the 2ZZ engine with the cam lift at 6400RPM. I have to run 93 octane and the car loves the nitrous octane boast that you put in the gas tank. It is light and will fly. I hope in 2008 that they still offer the XRS with the high performance Engine and 6 speed transmission.
