NiGHTMaR3 08-08-2004, 09:49 PM i was wondering why they didnt put the celica gts engine in the tC instead of the camry 4 cylinder engine? because the tC is replacing the celica how come they just didnt put the Celica engine in there instead of putting a weaker camry engine...
LonelyDriver 08-08-2004, 10:20 PM The tc weight several hundred pounds more than the celica. I dont' think the engine could handle the extra weight
Warped 08-08-2004, 10:28 PM :werd:
The 2zz is probably better off in the lighter cars.
dthepit 08-08-2004, 11:04 PM not enough torque in the 2zz for the heavier tC.
Weaker Camry engine?
How about defining what's weak about it when it's got 160+ pounds of peak torque at much earlier rpm.
VVT-i Owns 08-08-2004, 11:18 PM OMG ITS EKAM!
Yes the 2AZ has a better torque and power curve for everyday driving.
NiGHTMaR3 08-09-2004, 08:49 PM i meant weak horsepower wise. and i guess i understand why the put the camry engine more TQ hmmm
^You need to understand you need the value of torque to calculate value of horsepower on any engine.
96camry4dr 08-09-2004, 09:27 PM all hp is is trq over time. Plus id prefer a sweet curve than peak. I like to be able to get up and go while im driving normal.
BlackCherry tC 08-10-2004, 05:04 PM Anyone have there tC dyno'd yet? If so how was the results? Im going with a custom built turbo for mine. Supercharger I think would be to hard on the gas milage.
Hmm
Supercharger = Instant zoom
Turbo = Instant power after certain RPM
I think that if im cruising around town and not wanting to get on it, the turbo would be the way to go.
Oh well, Ill get you guys some pics as I go thru my transformation of my car.
GO TORQ!
Warped 08-10-2004, 09:43 PM They'd both be on hard on gas mileage; they're both forced induction.
VVT-i Owns 08-10-2004, 11:10 PM Actually a mild level of forced induction increases efficiency.
02RSX90camry 08-11-2004, 12:15 PM well tht depends on your tuning, but that's true, that's why u see (or at least used to see) a lot of turbo diesel engines.
jhbhatia 08-11-2004, 03:08 PM romor has it 8th gen celica will not have the 2zz...rather it will have the 2az. Hence to counter-argue....Although N.America will not get the 8th gen celi...the tc will be the celica we never got (in engine wise).
TubRog5 08-11-2004, 08:33 PM I don't know why people keep saying it and assuming it, but the tC is "NOT" a replacement for the discontinued Celica in the North America. The tC is its own car and has its own place in the Toyota line up. If Toyota decides to replace the Celica then I'd more so assume they'll just use the same Celica sold in the rest of the world and rebadge it. Not saying that'll happen, but its what I'd assume will be of the Celica if it was to be replaced.
But yes, rumor does have it that the 8th generation Celica will be driven with the 2azge. Still just rumors though.
2AZ-FE 08-12-2004, 02:11 PM Hey all,
I am new to this. I agree with the previous post though. I have not heard anything about the Celica being discontinued. I think that it will still be here. Just a new motor for it.
Also, in my opinion, the Celica GTS motor is a large pile of crap. The new motor is much better all around and would be much better even in the Celica. The torque and horsepower combo of the Celica motor is very poor when you drive the vehicle. It feels slow, even with a manual to me. Just my opinion though.
jhbhatia 08-12-2004, 04:42 PM read motor trend from a few months ago - its OFFICIAL. 2005 is the LAST year for celica in n. america!
ducky 08-12-2004, 10:30 PM the camry engine is a lot stronger than the celica engine. Peak HP over torque might be great for revving up to 8000rpm, but i like the idea of having enough torque to haul stuff right off the line, and not having to rev the engine up to high. Plus, given equal amounts of tuning, a bigger engine can make more HP.
NiGHTMaR3 08-14-2004, 07:25 AM o hmm i though they were completly killing the celica world wide

Nope, just in the North America. Well, the US at least. The celica will still be sold overseas.
2AZ-FE 08-16-2004, 12:42 PM Hey,
No reason to get upset. I had not heard that. My mistake. If they are getting rid of it that is fine with me. Just new information for me. Thanks for the source of the article though. I will definitely go online and check it out.
madpb 08-23-2004, 07:49 AM tC is sorta the replacement for both the MR2 and the Celica. tC is so much less $$$$ and bigger better faster so why carry those models that compete for the same $$$$ and dont sell. Very few Celica's and MR2 were sold in the last few years.(according to the salesman at the dealership i bought my tC)

TubRog5 08-23-2004, 06:32 PM The tC doesn't replace any of Toyota's cars. It is its own car and in its own category. The tC's main competitors are the base model RSX, the Civic Si, Focus and the Mazda3. The Celica's competitors were cars like the Integra GSR (now RSX Type-S), Sentra SE-R and the Tiburon. The MR-S, well, thats obviously in a totally different category.
cleartwo 08-23-2004, 09:28 PM but yeah the engine is nice. I took one for a spin and the torque was right there. No hesitation off the start evan on a hill. and yeah thats partly cause it's new, but i can't say anything bad about that 2.4
it's too bad about the celica and mr2, but something else will come along to take on the new competition, whatever it may be.....
