How does E-Shift work?

I know it works exactly like an automatic, while the driver is using the shift button instead.

Here's my question: do you need to release the throttle when you do a upshift/downshift?

I test drove the 2k Celica GT-S auto when I was in the market for a car (but I was gonna get a 6 speed Celica all along). The E-shift is an automatic, just that it has two modes, a 'manual' mode (you have to move the stick shift to the left to select manual mode) where you select the gears on the steering wheel, or full automatic mode. The buttons and the e-shift system is exactly the same one that comes with a Lexus GS400/430. Performance wise, there is a fairly noticeable difference between the 6 speed and the auto...

Now to your question: no you don't have to release the throttle, the e-shift is an automatic tranny, just that it will hold the gear until you tell it to change...

Now that system would be kick ass if it were a semiautomatic. release throttle and change. The clutch works by itself. Like F1. And it is just as good as a manual.

I think they're doing something like that with the MR-S

Try a Lexus IS-F, it even blips the throttle when you down shifts.
