Where is Toyota’s sports car?
Nissan has the 350Z, Mazda has the RX-8, and Honda has the NSX and the S2000.
Ford will soon have 3 - the new Mustang, the GT, and the Shelby Cobra.
Subaru with the WRX & WRX STI and Mitsubishi has the Lancer Evolution VIII.
But those last 2 should not have even been made, I mean really, why would you want a 4-door sports car? C’mon that’s silly, although they are faster than some of the others.
In late 93’ the Toyota Supra Twin-Turbo came out with a tested 0-60 time of under 5 seconds. There was also the MR2 turbo (mid-engine rear wheel drive 2-seater) that one was also very quick, but they both died due to increased pricing and the late 90’s “great depression”. Some people might say hey! , what about the new MR-S? Are you kidding, that car is weak, Maybe that was the plan from the start, MR-S (mid-engine rear wheel drive s**t). That would be fitting.
It’s not like they can’t afford it, they are the number one auto manufacturer in the world.
Sure, Toyota’s new “save fuel while saving the environment campaign” with their hybrid vehicles is nice, but some of us would rather chop a tree down and throw it in the fireplace than plant one.
SOMEBODY ANSWER ME!! WHERE THE HELL IS THE MARK V? TOYOTA HAS
BECOME THE WIMP LATELY, THEY DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING GOOD!!!!!!!
Piddy 08-14-2004, 07:37 PM Not gonna happen.... only luck is the Volta.
TubRog5 08-14-2004, 07:39 PM Be patient. Also, have you ever driven an mr-s? Its a great handling machine and light weight. Its a drivers car.
rapsux2000 08-14-2004, 07:41 PM Toyota isn't really interested in making a really fast and expensive car for America. They're goal is only to compete for sales here. They do have some projects in the works. They have a 400 hp hybrid vehicle in the works. Toyota is smart, that's why they have been on top for sales in the US. Affordability with reliability has been their key to success here.
96camry4dr 08-14-2004, 08:18 PM ya and dont bash on 4dr sports cars....id take one over a 2dr anyday....but i guess i prefer 4drs since they normally give more room and you can fit more people confortably...oh and yes you have much easier access to your back seats...i think the only time i would by a 2dr is if thats all thats offered with the car i want or if i buy a truck....and who needs a "new" expensive sports car....go buy one of those toyotas you are pissed are gone and spend the extra money making it even better...and with all the emissions plans comming into effect over the next 5 or 10years or so id rather toyota spend some time making a kick ass hybrid or even straight up electric car so that whole emissions thing wouldnt be a worry.....but then again just go buy a 20 yr old car and as of right now you wont really have to worry bout emissions...some people dont want a superpowerful fast car....they want a fun car....and toyota has made plenty of those
epborden 08-14-2004, 09:48 PM They can't waste their money in a market that figures show doesn't want a sports car. So they gear their cars for sales here in America, and sell the sports cars elsewhere, like Japan.
bowlofturtle 08-14-2004, 09:54 PM 4 door sports cars are the way to go. whats so bad about them? i love them. makes it easier for people go get out and in of the car. espeically if you got some family members that are a little overweight or a little old and have trouble getting into 2 doors.
silver04rollas 08-14-2004, 10:22 PM Toyota has been gearing more towards sport sedans while reducing two door true sports cars. Acura has been doing that for a few years where they have been eliminating 2 door cars from their line up. Corolla XRS is an awesome sport sedan that is a blast to drive and so is IS300. Toyota plans to launch more sport sedans in the next few years.
Sportivo Concepts 08-14-2004, 11:00 PM All I will say is sit back and watch... we will get a new import, that won't be Americanfied (meaning we get the weaker version). Plus we will be getting alot more options... look at the Camry, yopu have 3 engine choices, not to mention that they are all 5spd.
As Phi said in a thread a while back, Toyota always answers, well that is no more.
I have one word for ya Beems!
Piddy 08-15-2004, 03:34 AM mmm..... beams..... :D
Rolla97 08-15-2004, 04:06 AM Toyotas sportscars died back in 1998. Goodbye MR-2 Turbo and Supra TT:disappoin
Rolla97 08-15-2004, 04:09 AM I wouldnt mind seeing toyota make a Turboed AWD sports sedan though:D  .......... wishful thinking.
They question is, how long are we willing to wait for Toyota to give us an answer? I'm gonna be in the market for a new car next year...and if I can't afford an IS300 by then, it's off to another company I go. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this mindset and studies show that once you lose a customer, it's harder to get them back
silver04rollas 08-15-2004, 04:32 PM If you are serious about getting an IS300 next year. Wait for the next generation IS300 due next spring.
kasimmmmm 08-15-2004, 05:01 PM the least they can do is give me a supercharger for my 3.3L vvti!!! I want more power!!!
L-TunedIS300 08-15-2004, 05:09 PM Look for the IS350GT to make its debut in '06.
Its rumored to have a 300+ hp 3.5L and be available in a coupe and AWD model.
It would have been great to see the IS430 be released to the public but Lexus will never let us get our hands on a BEAST like that :disappoin

No...actually, I WANT the current IS.... I don't believe in buying first and second model year cars...too many problems despite better quality controls... We've had a first model year gen5 camry and a first model year from the gen1 sienna...but were/are good cars, but had many little problems...first model year IS300 had like 30 TSBs out... and two recalls... And unless the new IS has an inline 6, i don't want a v6 or v8 engine...

The Mark II is already there... they just need to give the NA market some love
Structureboy 08-16-2004, 04:22 AM Wait so, MMX, you registered to yelp about how Toyota doesn't have a "proper sports car?"
From a business perspective, it makes sense for Toyota to not sell Supras, MR-S, Celica's and other cars. Of course we have the TC replacing the Celica, but the market for Toyotas doesn't buy their sport cars. Toyota's image, I believe, has always rested upon reliable and solid automobiles. You can debate the Earth over whether they're sporty machines, but the fact is, Toyota got to its position b/c they make reliable cars.
If you want a sporty car, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, all make very sporty cars. But none have the rock-solid reliability of Toyota.
Personally, I'd like to see Toyota make a car similiar to the Supra, but people like us, represent a very small segment of Toyota's marketing, and frankly this demand isn't enough to convince toyota to come out with a 350Z killer.
I imagine Toyota might use the Scion brand to launch off a coupe aimed towards the younger market, but we'll see.
And the MR-S was a very superb handling vehicle, even if it was under-powered.

xpeed 08-16-2004, 01:00 PM Japan do make sports car. Their last Supra production ended in 2000. (Not sure exactly when) But in Japan, they have the sports sedan that's awesome. I'll list some here:
1.) Chaser Tourer V (280 HP)
2.) Mark II Tourer V (280 HP, "Twin Turbo 2.5L, 278 lbs. Torque
3.) Verossa (200 HP, 184 lbs Torque)
*If you guys don't know what it is)

4.) Altezza RS200 (210 HP)
2 Doors
4.) Soarer (300 HP)
5.) Celica GT-S (190 HP)
That's pretty much it that's on the market for Toyota today.

wow, those look really nice, but a little too honda like.
jhbhatia 08-16-2004, 01:51 PM gone are the days when a two door - two seater could be defined as a sports car only. More manufacturers are using current lineup to introduce another engine options calling it 'sporty'. I agree we don't have a sports car (for sure)..but more emphasis is going to go into addition to current line up (like how rolla got the xrs). THats proving more success than a bringing out a whole new vehicle. Three years ago, peoples' eyes were on hatches..but the SI hatch has hardly caputred the market the previous SI had...the market still wants a 2 door coupe (4 doors) sport-tuned-vehicles versus actual traditional 2 door2seater sportscars.
sonyminidiscman 08-16-2004, 03:25 PM you know what I would love to do...
make my own sports car...... transform the inside completely of my 94 corolla.......... get an sti engine, put it in my back seat and trunk..... change it to rwd... and leave the outside stock. then... even the z4's, prelude, golfs will have a suprise
Niklow 08-16-2004, 05:48 PM Personally, I want something in the Celica Class, which will be dead this next year.
I cannot afford to pay 50g's lexus sports car, i want something in the Toyota range.
stock93cam 08-17-2004, 07:42 PM i was reading sport compact car today that i just got in the mail...and they had a writeup on the Lotus Elise...technically its not a toyota but it does have a toyota so if you will it is a toyota(powered) sports car...too bad the one they tested was $42,000 nice looking car though...
