(per 6 months for a male under 25) The insurance difference between a '93 corolla, '99 protege ES, and '93 ES 300 is within $30 of each other. An '00 GS400 and LS400 is $30 more than that. A VW Beetle is not $50 cheaper to insure than the first group.

Insurance is not a big difference.

I payed $3500 for mine, but then it had 162K miles when I bought it. Body in great shape and fully loaded too. I think I made out pretty good, however, because the KBB private seller value for my car in it's mileage and condition for my zip code was $5600.

I pay $380/year for insurance, under my own name (I suspect that since I am now 25 will make that rate lower).

bowlofturtle, I'd buy it, it seems like a well kept car. Make sure there is no metal pieces on the trans dipstick, and hope that the fluid is not black. Try to find the previous owners maintance record if you can. Ask the dealer to show you the carfax report. And last but not least, try to make them knock down the price, and/or include a 12,000 mile warranty.
If they can't get a 12k mile warranth try to get at least 3 months 3k miles.

i'm like 99% postive that an oil man had this car. Still had nice toyota red in the system. timing was done 59,000. i did take a peak at the trany stick didn;t see metal stuff. will double check what else can i look at.

i got someone from the forum to pull up car fax

The story of this 1995 TOYOTA AVALON XLS (4T1GB11E2SU063228) according to our interpretation of the information reported to CARFAX: This sedan has had 1 owner in Illinois. The first title for this sedan was reported to CARFAX by an Illinois DMV in 1995.It has had no minor or moderate accidents reported to CARFAX.It has had no DMV-reported total loss events, like a major accident, fire or flood. It has not been reported by a DMV as having an Exceeds Mechanical Limits or Not Actual Mileage title. It has a consistent mileage history with no indication of an odometer rollback. It was driven an average of 9,308 miles per year, which is lower than the industry average of 15,000. The last odometer reading, reported on 10/04/2003, was 75,000 miles

the said " 3 month powertrain warranty" which i'll get it in writing.

I just remembered something. When i put my camry in reverse and let off the brakes my camry rolls backwards. But when i started the avalon and put it in reverse i had to step on the gas to get the car to go back. both times when i pulled it out and pulled it in. Is that a bad thing? could me all in my head.

whats the diffrence between XL- XLSl based model.

mines had the rims, moonroof, fully powered. didn't pay attention to the speakers. how are those like? CD player like my camry's aside that i didn't notice much other then auto climate, leather, wood grain, bucket fronts

My ideas on how to haggle. I went monday and talked to him. test drove inspected engine. I made it obvious that i was looking for stuff. targeting everything. Test drove it 10miles. Did a burn at jewel's parking lot :D. When i got done. i stood in front of the car and started to talk prices. He told me 10 days they had the car. And they just droped the price down from 7200 to 5995. 7200 was the sticker price still on it. He said " u will not find another deal like this" and all the gravy stuff. i told him " c'mon you have to give me a better price, i have $2000 in cash right now for down" He stayed with $5995 firm. So then i walked off. I'm going to try to come thrusday to the same guy maybe and take my dad. let him drive it and eveyrthing and push the price. Then walk off no matter what. Come back Saturday with my mom who i said it was oginally for and this time i'm kinda looking to buy. My dad wants $6000 out the door. How do i do that. Just say $6000 out the door. Should i ask to go to his little cube?

The car sounds like a diamond. I'd buy it even at the price they want. But 6k out the door means he would have to discount it 600 bucks or so. If you really want it don't hesitate to buy it, because it just might not last that long.

XLS btw is the top of the line model. Kind of like the XLE. It sounds like it has everything that was available for that model.

Don't bother talking numbers on the lot. You'll get nowhere. And it isn't the salesman that does the negotiating on the price either. It is either his manager or the desk manger. Be sure when you go back though to ask for the salesman you were dealing with, they do work on commision and it sucks when you don't ask for them. Unless you didn't like him personally. But make it clear to him that you will buy it for 6k out the door, and spend the time haggling with the sales manager.

i emailed the sale man sunday night asking if the car was there. i got a reply on monday saying it was. about 8am. then i emailed him monday night asking if he can get me a better deal because i liked the car but the price was a little rich for my blood. He didn't reply. I kno its like a day but all the other emails i got a responce or a call withing 24 hours. Did he just ingore my email.

I'ma go thursday and bust out my digi cam and take pictures. Let me know if you want any close up of anything so i can do that. And make sure the engine is well running. The engine wasn't power washed or anything but still pretty clean.

Yea i talked to him if the price was 5995 how much would i walk out with. he was like 500 about for taxes 8.25% i think, 140 tax/title. and something else. he gave me 6700 walk out.

i paid 6000 (total, including tax) for my 96'avy in oct, 2004. original owner, 81500 miles on it, no accident.

what i would like to mention is: 1. check the boots (both sides) for steering rack. 2. CV boots. 3. wind noise coming from the corner of front side window. 4. leak from rear valve cover

But cars sold by dealer is hard to tell, cause they clean everything up....

i have put 200 bucks on this car for both drive axles and TB (did by my own, no labor)

i have to fill some PS fluid every other month. a well known foreign car shop in the town checked for leak, but they didn't found one. Still a mystery now.

I know the prices isn't that big of a diffrence. But the main this is avaibilty. I mean if it was between a avalon and a LS400 at the same lot i would go for the lexus who wouldn't but there isn't a LS 400 in my face. You can only buy a car that you can find for $6000 if i could have anything i want i would go for a 96 Es300. Which i aimed for at first but i found the avay.

Toys i could care less for the whoreing. Everyone does it :D

Ruoknow thanks for the advice to look at. I'm sure that i could probaly take the car out to a mechanic but i dont have a personal mechinac. Well non that i trust. Since i'm at a auto tech school i normally ask my teachers how and why things happen and then i go about fixing it during class most of the time.

I bought my Avy for $4395 before taxes, a little over $4500 out the door. It's a '99 with 150K and I bought it last Thanksgiving. It was completely dealer serviced and was driven by a cardiologist rep (not around town). They wanted $6K. I have had no problems with it other than the EGR valve position sensor ($30, and simple to change), and a battery, which was part my fault. I take that back, I just put new contacts in the starter ($22). It's a XL with leather, moonroof, and no seatheaters which sucks. I has premium audio, and the better rims, tires. Great engineering for the price.
I wouldn't recommend a LS400 unless you have money to put into it. A $60k car marked down to $6K is cheap for a reason, and last time I checked parts for Lexuses weren't cheap. Also the V8 is nice, but not necessary, and not worth it when gas is $2/gal. Look for a nice Avalon or fancy Camry. I think you'll be a lot happier in the long run. Good Luck

On haggling on the price, most salesman I know aren't going to say "I'll drop it down to _________" unless you're standing there with a wad of bills with you ready to walk. They're not going to drop the price too low unless they know they've got a definite buyer in front of them. That, and be nice to them and shoot the breeze. Sales is a stressful job and if you walk in with a "gimme this car for this price or else I walk" attitude, you'll probably get a negative response. If you explain that "I really like the car and am ready to pay this much on the spot, but I can't go any higher". In reality, if you're really digging the car and it's in great shape, then paying an extra few hundred is worth it.

That price was minus the TT&L, I was out the door for 29,600

I bought it at a dealer about 100 miles away and bought it through the internet. The dealer had to drive a dealer trade from Louisville Ky to Ackron (sp) Ohio to trade a car and pick mine up.

I was hoping to get a little better deal but since they are still very new, I couldnt seem to get them down anymore. My credit union financed the entire cost (including TT&L) at 4.5 % so the payment is pretty affordable

I really do like the car, only a couple of complaints
1 the rear glass has a distortion
2 when going around corners real slow, the drive by wire seems to hesitate
3 The head rest seems to push my head too far forward for my compfort on long trips

Other than that it is a great car. I can't believe the mileage it is getting n 29 mpg on the first 100 miles (all interstate)

Make sure you mention item 2 each time you take the car in. Mine does this also and other board members have told me that this is a common complaint in earlier years that was suppose to be revamped in the 05 model.

My worst corner is one that I hvae to travel everyday coming home. It is a left turn lane in which you have to coast through the turn and then once you are straight again you are suppose to accelerate. Only thing is the RPM's advance but the car is not moving any faster, then it will catch and were off.

24mpg on average is pretty darn good. Lowest mpg I've ever gotten was 21mpg, and that's with running some of that carb cleaner junk that cleans your injectors but kills your gas mileage.

I dunno, I guess i'm happy with mpg vs performance, but there's times when I have the pedal to the floor and i'm just rocking back and forth going "come on baby let's go!!" ... I'm use to chevy 350s :burnout:

We bought a 95 Avalon XL (bench, ABS, Moonroof...pretty much the base model) 2 years ago with 144,000 on it for $4300. It was in perfect condition (but origional everything, including fluids (save for oil) and even the timing belt). It is my mom's car, but I drive it whenever I am home from school...I love my Corolla, but it's no Avalon.

It has 204,000 miles on it now, and avarages 31MPG (half city / half highway) with premium. We couldn't be happier with it.

My aunt just picked up a '98 with 110k miles for $5995. It's one of the base base models with no power seats and steel wheels, but it does have the CD player, traction control and strangely, the gold emblem package and 'wood'. It was origionally listed for $6500, but they knocked it down when they heard that my dad knew the owner of the dealer.

We paid $31,000 for our XLS sans navigation/premium audio/cooled seats/HID....basically $31k for an Avy XLS with the only included option being the Traction Control system. Added an aftermarket OEM style spoiler/lip for 195 painted and installed.

Also we got $8k on our trade-in car that was not worth more than $6,200 on kbb.

They are asking $7950 but I was going to try and see if they will take $7000 even. After reading some of these posts, it sounds a little high even at $7000. What do you guys think?

Just got a used 2005 avalon xl with 7800 miles yesterday. $21,900 from a private party plus I'll have to pay tax 7% about $1550 when I take the title down to the dmv to get the car registered registration usually costs around $50. 6 disc changer and floor mats were the only options. Car is in excellent condition.

My DWP 1996 Toyota Avalon XLS was given to me as a gift when I got my license from my aunt and uncle. Currently been going places with this car, I already put 157,000 mileage on it, and still proud to have it. Now with the gas prices that are going up, this car can save me soo much money compared to a Lexus IS 300. Maybe later on, when I have the chance, I'll post a picture up.

Nearly 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Not too long ago, I took a roadtrip to Pheonix, Arizona. Put $40 for a full tank (running on 87) at the 76 gas station, quite amazingly, made it to Pheonix, Arizona with 3/4 of a tank.

Heh, yeah I was happy about the price. The dealer just got it on his lot and I took a look at it with a friend who knew more about cars than me. The last owner was a smoker and there are a couple burns on the seats. After test driving it and looking it over I acted a bit non-interested and asked how low he would go as is and he dropped it 500 bucks. And I almost settled for a 97 Geo prism that was all grungy. Going to seal the deal this monday/tuesday on a 1996 Avalon XL. The lady just paid off the remainder of a loan she has on it, and the title is in the mail from the bank.

1996 Toyota Avalon XL. Leather Interior, 3 out of 4 new tires (2 new and then an older one had a flat, so still one a little low on tread, but original new spare), Alloy Rims, Bench Seating in Front, 3-Disc in-dash CD/Tape Deck, not a ding on the entire body. And with only 45,968 ORIGINAL MILES.

I haggled the price of this beauty down to $5,000. I think based on the low mileage, this is a GREAT buy. Please give me your feedback. :) Thanks!

I'm about to leave MA tomorrow night or Fri early AM for VA. I'm finally gonna go to hopefully get my 97 XLS! It has all the toys. Don't know about VSC or not until I get there. I will examine the car from bumper to bumper with a fine toothed comb. If all goes well and we agree on an OTD price, I will have saved between 1400-2000 even after travel expenses. For those who are looking for a used Avy because you can't afford new or even close to it, look around. Don't be afraid to scan any distance. You can get the car for at least 1000 less than where you are. I don't know why New England is so high on prices. One dealer wanted 10k for the exact same car with higher mileage than mine. Stay tuned folks. I'll give an update after I get back.

Steve

PS: 179k miles, looks in good shape, $3300.00
Same car & mileage or higher up here is 4800-8000.

steve326a
10-14-2006, 11:27 PM
Well folks, as of Fri afternoon, I finally became the proud owner of my 97 Avy XLS! Except for the headlight washer, it has "all the toys" (YES it has VSC)! It has a few issueswhich need to be fixed bt they can be handled. 1st thing I did before I even left VA to come back home to MA is I did an oil change with Mobil 1 Synth oil. I did a milesge check after I got home and I got 33.4 mpg averaging 60-65. If I didn't have some heavy traffic and slow downs, it would probably have gotton 34-35. The struts are weak & mounts are shot, steering knuckle making noise, needs front & rear stablizer bushings, rotors & brakes, windshield, tranny flush (fluid seemed dark). I already planned on 1000-1200 for repairs when I got the car. Even after that, I still saved 1000-2000 if I bought one up here in New England. I only paid 3100 for it. I am so pleased that I finally got myself a real car. More updates later. Bye for now.

Steve

PS: It even has power moonroof
PSS: as of 10/16 I stand corrected. I have Traction Control not Skid Control

Well thanks for the reply Steve. I checked the battery terminals and they're fine. What I've found out since then is that there are a number who have experienced this and it has something to do with circuit overload or something like that. Apparently no one has had a "major" problem , it's more of an irritation which may go away with the replacement of a heavier duty battery sometime.

PRG knows his stuff. My father taught me to walk in with cash, make an offer and put the money on the table. It works like a charm; sometimes a little scary when buying airplanes and other high-ticket items . . . but it works. I bought a 96 Avalon for 35K and I'd have spent, I suspect, $500.00 less if I'd had cash rather than a cashier's check.

Not sure if this is good or not. Been reading the threads on the Avy's. It's a'97 XLS Loaded. I'm copying below what the seller responded to me in an email. In the original ad, he says the KBB is $6500, but he is selling for less ($4000) because it needs new front tires and alignment. Then he said the following in response to an email I sent him:

<I have had it since 2000, had 36,000 miles on it. I am selling it cause it was time to get a new car. I took it in for tires and "something else", mechanic said it needed tie rods, tires , allignment, ( cannot remember if he said ball joints needed fixed or not..do not think so ) , then there was the ol once I get in there...so I decided to get a new car since this had 138,000 miles on it. The engine had been leaking oil due to a PCV valve. Once he replaced that the oil quit leaking.

It is the XLS package which includes about everything, I like the car, if I had fixed the front I would still be driving it...hindsight that is what I probably would have done. Dual air bage, anti lock brakes etc. Bigger than the Camry, nice car.>

Any opinions out there? Thanks from a Toyato Newbie!

Jaggrey

I doubt KBB is $6500... KBB on my 98 is only about $4-5000, tho I only have an XL. And that's if it was in good condition, which considering the repairs you'll have to do on this car it's not in that condition.

I'd offer him $3000 and see how low he goes. Or ask him how much they'd charge him to fix everything and subtract that amount from the $4000 price.

Picked up a 97 Avalon XLS last month from local chrysler dealer that recieved it on a trade in.
It has 181619 miles on it and a minor dent on the drivers side front fender. They listed it for
only $1795.00 on autotrader.com and I had to go and take a look at it. Was raining pretty
hard when I drove over to check it out. Only about a mile away. Decided to wait for the rain
to let up before checking any further. 2 hours later went back and rain has stopped and I
asked to look it over. Interior was in fantastic shape, tired were in good shape, Goodyears.

Took it for a test drive with dealer and noticed that at slower speeds it made an aweful lot
of rattling noises from the rear and front, but once on the highway it smoothed right out and
felt great. Brakes worked great to. Drove it back to the dealership and told the salesman that
I wanted to talk it over with my wife since I was buying it for her to get back and forth to work.
She did not get off till 6pm and they closed at that time. He said he would stay later to show
her.

Got a call a couple hours later around 3pm from him telling me that 4 other callers were now
coming to look at it. One from as far the MSP area, 2 hours away. Decided I had better not
wait and get down there to buy it. Told him I would be back in a couple minutes to to buy it.
Came up to $1938.00 after tax, title transfer fees. Sweet deal.

Just had the coolant flushed out of it. It was brown color and had been mixed
at sometime. Also just bought some rear sway bar bushings and sway bar links.
So far its only cost about $300. Going to wait till next month and get new front
brakes, mechanic said they were about 10% yet. It doesn`t go far to work so it
should last no problem without damaging the rotors.

I bought my 2005 Touring last month for $20 K off a private seller from eBay. It only had 21,500 miles on it and is super clean. A whole lot better than the 98 Grand Am I've driven the past 7 years.

Only issue is when it rains, a little water leaks into the trunk along a seam under the the trunk lid. Took it to the dealership and they said it had previous body work along trunk and rear left side. Carfax report came up clean prior to purchasing. Gonna check into eBay's buyer protection program to see if this can be fixed.

Now, the only thing I have to do is get my Sirius satellite and iPod connected.

I found Carfax reports to be unreliable to, I went to NADA and found on the same car I
checked all kinds of issued unreported at Carfax for the same car. Plus when you buy into
NADA reports you get 3 months instead only 1 month Carfax gives you.

I would love to find a good deal on newer Avalon, I have fallen for the 97 I bought the wife.
Instead I am stuck driving the family 97 Olds Silhoutte. Its nice and all but it does not have
the feeling you get when you drive an Avalon.

How much do you think I should have payed for my 1995 Avalon?
I believe it's at 160k miles now. The leather is worn but it's still in good shape overall. Nothing really wrong with it.

Just bought an '06 Avalon Limited, loaded with seemingly every feature immaginable, 19k miles for $25k. Good deal? KBB excellent retail said $30k, and this orginally stickered for $38k.

Well, it was a toss up between a Bnew Touring 07 for $27k with $500 rebate or an 06 v6 salsa red 4runner with 22k on the clock in very good condition for $22k.

We went with the 4runner instead  ... Think we'll deffinetly get the Avalon when we have to trade in the Camry sometime in the distant future. And it will happen just as long the looks stay either the same or better!! and ofcourse the quality.

I got my Avalon about 6 month ago for $300. :whatwhat:
HOWEVER, that was because it was in an accident. (small front driver side collision) Cost 'bout 2500 in repairs. 1996 XLS. purchased at 192K mi, has 206K currently and runs shweet- . Though I'm paranoid at how long it will last! :p:

paid with tax, dealer fees, out the door 38,400. has nav, laser cruise, stability sys, car as loaded with every option. not happy with nav system. i have a garmin nuvi 680 and it has 100% coverage. this unit has very limited full coverage to get u where u want to go. that is the only disappointment with the car. it seems to be the same size as the ls460.

yep title is clear. (did a "car fax" on the car before I bought it.)
I noticed the car also has the traction control and VSC, not sure if that std. equip. or an option.

I'm looking at a 95 avalon. well kepted at 89k miles timing done at 59k for $5995. Car is mint. Pretty sure its a steal. But i wanted to know what everyone else paid for.
I bought my 95 Avalon about a year ago with 136,000 miles on it. I bought from the Original owner, (my bosses sister in law) for $1000. The only thing I done to it so far is to change the oil and buy 2 new tires.

Oh I also added a pioneer AVIC-D2 Navigation/stereo system.

I bought a '98 Avalon XLS this summer with 68K miles, moonroof, nice wheels, premium sound, dual power leather seats, etc. for $9K this summer. I negotiated all new Yokohama AS 430 tires, wheel alignment, and a 1 year warranty as part of the deal. When i went to do my first oil change, I noticed that the passengers side CV inboard boot was leaking grease. My fault I should have had them put the car up in the air first so I could have got a maglite up in there and inspected things. The dealer, after i called him, agreed to pay for a Napa halfshaft with lifetime warranty but I had to eat the labor. I think I probably paid to much, but I have cancer, and wanted one last trip back home to ride in style.
