PPW-546 03-03-2005, 01:11 PM Peeps,
is it possible to put in high comp pistons for a 4AGE into the 5A motor? And what type of cams should I put in to add more ponies? Lift and Duration? Other ideas on how to increase HP on my 5A? I want to play with the engine first before i decide if I would replace it or not, depends if i get the desired performance I want.
Thanks!
Chris Corolla S 03-03-2005, 01:31 PM Never heard of the 5A... what's the complete engine code??
We don't have a 5A powered AE92 in North America as far as I know...
A-series stuff is usually interchangeable though...
Flashmn 03-03-2005, 02:32 PM 5A is a 1.5liter if I remember correctly.
mrboxman 03-03-2005, 08:32 PM i have a 5A-fe same thing probably, i from Trinidad in d caribbean and alot of our cars are JDM because of the huge 'foreign used' market. But its pretty hard to get aftermarket parts for the 5a in my search locally most mods are for the 4a-ge
Johan 03-04-2005, 12:01 AM Hi,
The 5a is nearly the same as the 4a. Smaller bore , pistons and minor differences on the head.
Do any of you guys have any documentation on the motor? I replaced my 4af with a 5a but i need some info on the carburator. We in South Africa Are only now getting Cars with cathylic converters on our vehicles. I need to bypass all the vacuum pipes on the carb. Any info will be a great help.
automatic 03-04-2005, 12:09 AM Johan, the car may run too rich with all the vacume lines plugged, not good in an area that is high altitude to begin with.
You may need to re-jet the carb after plugging off the spare lines.
PPW-546 03-04-2005, 09:54 AM 5A motor is the same as the 4A motor, but with lower displacement and carb-fed. If i bore the cylinders to say 1600cc, would the high-comp 4AGE pistons work? what would be the differences in the head of a 4A motor vs the 5A?
Johan,
I took a good look at my carb this morning and I only saw 3 vacuum lines. one going to the valve cover, one to the intake manifold and i cannot distinguish the other one but there are three lines total. You might want to check the vacuum switch located on the firewall near the wiper motor. there might be something wrong with the switch if the vacuum is not working.
PPW-546 03-04-2005, 09:57 AM Flashmn, what cams are you using in our engine? I noticed that below 3000rpm, my engine runs okay but when it hits 3000 and up, the sound changes and it revs quicker. Is there a way for the rev speed to be consistent? I want to increase my bottom end rpm and take off faster.
albertmdh 03-04-2005, 10:24 AM revs being revolutions, rpms being revolutions per minute, anything above 3000 being more than anything less than 3000? is this that strange? sorry, smart-ass attack.

does VTEC ring a bell??????? soemthing like that... but i know it can't be possible since i'm running an outdated 5A motor, non-TVIS, no VVTi...
any ideas albert???

Heheh... don't even bring up VTEC...
Umm, the engine picking up steam after 3000 rpms is NORMAL for most small stroke 4 cylinder gasoline engines. It hasn't much to do with anything but normal physics... Camshafts can modify how and where the engine makes its power... but don't expect it to be a completely different feel. Also... GE pistons will significantly increase compression when mated to an FE head.
PPW-546 03-04-2005, 05:39 PM Excellent! Thanks for your help Kwanza. I guess i'll go with the GE pistons and some bigger cams. Would the GE cams work too or it only works for dual camgears?
fredk 03-04-2005, 07:48 PM your gonna have way too much compression using ge pistons since the pistons are flat and the fe chamber is nearly flat, and nothing from the ge head will work in the fe head
Flashmn 03-05-2005, 01:39 AM Like the man said. You might have problems with the G pistons and the totally different valve angles of the F head.
PPW-546 03-08-2005, 11:36 AM i see. so what would be the best pistons for a stock block with ported head and angle valve job?
Flashmn 03-08-2005, 01:17 PM I dont think porting is really that great, mototune has a great article about it, and when you think about it, its really logical too. Check it out.

Wiseco makes good pistons ;)
PPW-546 03-09-2005, 04:54 PM i'd say it makes sense. I shoul've kept my original port size for my 5A motor. But i felt a gain in HP since it responds faster now after porting but i haven't got the chance to take it to a dyno yet. Anyway, thanks for the advice and I'll look into the Wiseco lineup.:D
