T-Rider,
I suppose you didn't get a response to your question because it's so hard to find aftermarket performance parts for our trucks. I have a '96 2WD and just started with performance mods. I started with Downey's Intake it. In my opinion, for about $200.00, it looks cheap because you basically are only adding a cone filter and mounting backet. You will still use the factory intake tube as compare to a nice chrome one that Downey makes for the Tacoma 3.4L. Nevertheless, I can truly said that the performance gain is there. It maybe minimal, by the gain is there. No one add-on mod will give you that much "seat of the pants" feel, but combining bolt-on mods make a difference. Next, I went with a set of JBA Cermanic Coated shortie headers. These headers are suppose to be a direct OEM bolt-on applications, but JBA has 3 different Y-Pipes that come with these headers for Tacoma and T100 with the 3.4L. I unfortuniately received, both Tacoma Y-Pipes and opted not to wait again for JBA to send me the correct Y-Pipe. So, I took my truck to a muffler shop and added a short extention to the last Y-Pipe that JBA sent me to connect it to the CAT. The performance is there, better with the intake. I also added a Magnaflow muffler since I could not find a CAT Back for a 2WD T100. TRD has a CAT Back system for 4X4 T100, but not the 2WD. Nevertheless, Magnaflow has a low mellow tone that really makes our trucks sound big, not loud, but big and smooth--people will notice. Next, I plan to replace the factory belt-driven radiator fan and add a 16" Derale Electric Fan, some Densio spark plugs, and performance coil pack with wires. This is the best I think we can do for our trucks short of supercharing. Now, your stock gears are probably 3.92. I know 4:10 made a big difference in "seat of the pants" feel on my 1998 F150, but I am not sure if the difference between 3.92 and 4:10s will make that much differences. I have 3:55 gears on my Ford before going with 4:10s. If you regear, with the combinations of performance mods mentioned, it should spin the wheels at any point between zero to 35MPH with stock tires or no more than 30" tall tires. It will also probably give you nice acceleration up to about 55-60MPH. After that, you will need a SC to maintain an aggressive acceleration rate. I used the same mods, along with SuperChips Micro Tuner, which is not available for imports, that made my marsh mellow and heavy 4.6L (small V-8) F150 into a performer. I was never last off the line and was never trying to be the first. The truck moved and performed well. I wish there was a tuner for our trucks, but why would a vendor invest $ in R&D for a truck that is no longer manufactured. JET Chips will re-program your ECU, but I have a problem with letting someone re-program my factor computer. So, I don't think there's a chip option for us...at least one, that I would spend money on.
I hope this helps.
