can i add power steering to '91 pickup?

i just bought a '91 toyota pickup. it has custom rims and big tires. it is hard to steer on sharp turns. is it possible for me to add a power steering unit? or will i have to put stock rims and tires back on it to ease the steering? if you know the answer, please feel free to email me at primetime_xl@hotmail.com . thanks in advance!

You should be able to add power steering to it. I believe Saginaw might make an aftermarket kit for it??? Or you can get it off of a pup with power steering.

I believe you should be able to transplant all the power steering apparatus from another pickup to get the desired effect....

yes you can. The most expensive piece to locate is the hose. The gear box will work of most trucks depending on 2WD/4WD. PS PUMP can be used off any 22RE truck or celica. The idler pulley as well. You will have to get the cooler that goes through the core support, the ps reservoir and a belt. Most everything can be found for about $150.00 to $200.00. I have done this three times.

i saw a few "complete changeover" kits on car-part.com for about $300 check it out in your e]area im interested in doin one on my 94 22re 2wd

wht if you dont have a cooler? will it matter if you just get the box pump and resivoir and hoses? ive never seen the cooler in the kit.

woorking on it now and i ran into the problem of my steering shaft being longer on my 94 2wd 5sp than the truck i pulled it off was an auto. the shaft on mine is 2 3/4 inch longer than the donor the shaft on the donor was 2 pieces and mine is only one piece. we are looking at cutting it shorter and welding it back together. anybody have any suggestions?

I bought the whole shooting match from a guy who works on nothing but Toyota trucks, and he gave me both shafts just in case.

we got it i was stupid and didnt realize i could adjust it under the dash on the inside. its in and works great and no more wheel shimmy. my old gearbox was worn slap out. the only thing i need to do now is put the steering wheel back to the middle because its crooked now. lol. took about 3 hours to do. i had a few little kinks with the bolts and stuff but now i could do it in about 2 hours. beats the hell out of armstrong steering!!!

How do you attach the third pully on the crank? The one I have looks like it's three or four little bolts, but when I look down the front of the engine, it looks like there is only one main bolt.

theres 4 bolts i think they are 10mm its easy you can leave the ballancer on the crank.

were do you get the bracketts for the pump and the geer box and etc.?

i pulled mine off a wrecked truck as a complete changeover. i pulled it with the brackets for the pump and the crank pulley i had was from a donor engine i had prior to my rebuild so during the rebuild i anticipated a changeover and put the 3rd pulley on. the steering box is cake all you need is a ball joint fork or a pitman arm puller from auto zone to seperate from the centerlink the box comes right out and bolts right in. as for the steering shaft you will have to loosen the bolt up under the dash so it can slide up because the box is a little bigger. you dont need any special parts or skills. the trickiest part is the steering shaft, make sure you lock the steering wheel straight because if not it will probabally be crooked, you might want to have it aligned in order to get it perfectly straight. if your tires arent straight when you set the wheel it will be crooked also.

i took my truck to pep boys fo an alignment they had it aligned right except for the steering wheel was still crooked i went back a week later and they told me i would need an appointment for tomorrow so we set it up. i went back to my appointment and they told me it would be a while. i was 15 min early. the guy kept arguing with me and telling me i was wrong and my wheel was not crooked so i calmly asked for a refund as the whole front end of my truck was brand new and i knew it was nothing in my tires or anything like that, when he checked everything twice after they actually had it right i told him i was still unhappy cuz i waited for 2 hours without them even looking at it and 2 more while they aligned it again even though i had an appointment slip that they gave me ane my name was clearly on his calender. i lucked out but in the future dont go to pep boys for anything.being a shadetree mechanic i was not the person they thought i was and tried to make excuses for work that was not done correctly . id hate to see what they do to your average person or an old lady.

working on it right now.....yea that figures i worked at a mechanic shop and this customer came in with a frozen engine like he spun the crankshaft bearings,i just started working at this shop so i was just helping them at the time and learning about mechanics stuff, so we broke it down and saw that a bolt had broken loose off somewhere and had lodged into the flywheel, a simple fix, so we just took the bolt out put it back together and told the owner of the shop about how it was just a bolt caught in between the flywheel, that bastard charged him for a used engine from his junk yard and also charged him labor for the " job " ...., those people are as crooked as the mafia so just be careful, even your name brand places like firestone will get you trust me because i worked there, usaually the shop foreman does the dirty work and comes out and inspects your car and tells you a bunch of salesman lingo bullcrap that your car needs this and that after or before they work on your car, for instance the big one at firestone was shocks boy did they screw some people over that one
