Tacomas didn't come out till '95,untill then they were Toyota Truck, anyhow I have a 4-banger ,but everyone i,ve talked to and read about on this website says the V6 fuel economy sucks-like 12mpg but maybe this will get some controversy and some responses from V6 owners-great trucks tho!

I had a '91 4Runner 4x4 SR5 with the 3.0L V6 and ECT automatic.
I usually got 15 mpg and thats doing 70 mph down the interstate highway @ 2400 rpm.
I would think that because a truck is lighter that it should pull at least 16 mpg.
As for what octane to run, 87 is all it needs.

Any Tacoma should give you plenty of reliability vs. that GMC.

I have a 1995 Tacoma extra cab, V6 5 speed. That's the 3.4 liter 190hp and I consistantly get 22 mpg. That's 2X4, not 4X4.

Hope that helps....

All Toyotas are sweet in my opinion.
I used to own a '99 Ford Ranger and in my opinion the Tacoma is superior to the Ranger in every regard except for purchase price.
Tacomas are comfortable, dependable and fuel efficient.

Yes, Toyota trucks seem to have a higher sticker price with fewer standard features. They ALSO hold their value much better than domestic small trucks.

Toyota also doesn't seem to negotiate very much on their trucks, nor offer substantial rebates. I never see $2500 rebates or 0% for 60 months on Tacoma, but Ranger...that's almost everyday. Guess they don't have to b/c those Tacoma's sell.

I've seen Tacos last over 300K, try that with a GMC.

However, I think the phrase "you get what you pay for" holds true. Saving $5000 on the sticker price doest mean much when you are broke down on the middle of nowhere.
A friend of mine recently bought a brand-new Ranger. Its pretty much top of the line (4x4, extended cab, power everything, off-road package). The truck listed for $25,000 and with all of the factory rebates and some haggling he managed to get that truck for $18,000.
Great price, but for what its worth Id much rathar pay a little more for Toyota's superior quality and engineering.
