One thing I've noticed about the Scion XA...

..... it hasn't emitted that sulfuric fart that all of our other Toyotas do -
could it be that Toyota fixed that problem, or is it because the car has less
than 100 miles on it?

Frankly, I don't even know what a "sulfuric fart" smells like. Could
you tell us or describe what it smells like.

My Toyota smells like a beer.

All of ours make that smell when we use either the heating or AC; apparently
we're not the only ones, from what I've read here.

That could be the result of cheap quality gasoline wreaking (or would that
be "reeking") havoc with a sensitive catalytic converter. Had you ever
tried different gasoline brands (regardless of octane)?

Since moving here last June, I have been using Shell V-Power, hoping that
would help, and it seems to reduce the occurrences of the smell, but it
didn't obliterate it.

You have EXELLENT taste! I sent a nasty letter to Rolling Stone, berating
them for forgetting to add David Byrne to their list of 100 'immortals' -
freaking Mad-Donna and Twitney were featured, but no David. It's sacrilege.
I've subscribed to them for about 30 years, but I gave them the boot!

How'd YOUR son end up with MY genes????

I was taking off my shoes one night and my 4YO son was about 2 feet away,
and he cast up his nose and went Sniff....Sniff...Poor kid...

To solve this problem, have him take off his socks at night and change
shoes every other day. After years of doctors, etc, one FINALLY asked me
if I wore my socks at night. Problem solved!!!

I always wear socks - it's something from my childhood, I'm sure; makes me
feel more secure (I also close closet doors - pretty pathetic for a

I was going to say I wasn't going to dispute that, BUT it did handle great
and was as FAST as stink!! ;) And it just OOOOZED Cooooool.....

Build quality was poor and the amount of parts I had to replace at only
120,000 miles was atrocious.

Same here, but the Dr told me if I wanted to lose the smell, lose the
socks...

He was right.

Since we are on smell

Why are men turned on by sight/smell of a female dressed in leather?

Reminds him of his pickup truck!

Anyhow, I've never noticed the smell from Toyotas But have once in a while
caught a whiff on the highway. Possible as one of you said gasoline
formulation/source may cause it.

Got only knows that we got to have the best/purest/sweetest gasoline here in
California as much as we pay for it (Majors today are $2.499) in Redding

It's a nuisance, but it doesn't bother me that much

Your gas has little sulfur in it.

Try other brands until the fartiness comes back. ;)

You have my sympathy. Here it dropped to $2.04. BUT I never use regular! I
usually run 1/2 tank 89 & 1/2 tank 93, for 91.

I don't get it...there are a lot of refineries in CA; all of ours gets
shipped in through New Haven CT. Why do we pay less???

I almost bought one of those in 1991. The $6,000 premium over the Integra
turned me off. I wanted RWD, but not *that* bad.

Unfortunately, Toyota that year just did not have what I wanted.

While I don't always agree with Scott, I try to stay out of conflicts between
him and others. He has never (to my knowledge) trolled me, but I was never
one to let others choose whom I should converse with. Scott has a group of
folks that he likes to confront, yourself included, but until he says or does
something I find absolutely reprehensible, I'm neutral. Hell, I used to even
reply to an individual on this NG that I despise more than you despise Scott.
Believe it. When this individual finally trolled me with complete disregard
for my feelings, I killfiled the critter.

As the urban phrase goes, "Don't start shit and there won't be shit"

My previous car was an '82 Corolla Liftback. I wanted a new version of
that, with lots of cargo capacity. Was not interested in a minivan.

The Corolla in 1991 was available as sedans or coupes only.

When I was 29, a wagon was an old fart's car (apologies to all the old
farts out there...). I thought I was too young to be an old fart.

LOL....

I've always liked little wagons...

Even before I became an 'old' fart...

I've owned a new xA for about 2 weeks now (approx. 450 miles on the
odo.) and have noticed nothing unusual about the exhaust (I was an ASE
certified mechanic for about 15 years). I vary my gas purchases
(Minneapolis area western suburbs) between Citgo, Holiday, Costco and
a couple of one off independents.

Do you have any theories as to why some Toyotas fart and others are OK? I
got my Scion last week, so it's early yet, but being in Florida, the AC is on
like all the time, of course. We'll see, but it's my husband's car anyway.
I'll be driving my Echo, assuming it survives my son until hubby gets back
from Korea. See my later post regarding my son and the Echo.

No Supra, eh? The GT-S (both Corolla and Celica) were front-drivers by
that time.

I *wish* I had bought mine in '91. First one I saw was in '89 in Toronto,
and decided I wanted one! It only took 12 years! Mine was a '90 with
112,000 on it. Shoulda bought a new one in '91, but my 'hachiroku' was
still an awesome machine at the time.

It's been covered to death - too much sulfur in certain brands of
gasoline, and a new more efficient catalytic converter catalyst mix in
new Toyotas that stinks to heck if you run any sulfur at all through
it. Even at a few parts per million.

And it will vary regionally, by originating refinery, pipeline
company and regional tank farm. Almost too many variables to track.
