What kills a '95 Land Cruiser?

Is there a sensor or other similar small part that, if it fails, will stop
the show on the 4.5L I6 Land Cruiser engine? I ask because with the other
vehicle I take off road, a Jeep, there is such a beast in the Crank Position
Sensor. It dies and you are dead. Anything similar in the Land Cruiser, or
do failures all default to limp-home mode?

On my 4runner, if the engine dies, the car will not move,
I'm going to guess that it is probably the same in you land cruiser, but,
not entirely sure. it "MAY" be able to run without an engine.

Smart ass answer is right! It's not an open-ended question though. What
sensors or relays will kill the engine and are carried as spares by "the
cool kids"?

on my dad fj80 '91 with a 3FE engine the EFI relay i beleive kills it. once it got hot it would basicly become useless. my dad got a new relay and it still did it. then we had a friend who's an electrical engineer make a new relay out of 12 volt relay and some wires and hook up on the ends. we haven't had any trouble out of it and we live in texas were its always hot. we also put some pipe insulation around it just to be sure.

we beleive it was caused by the headers we put on it, putting off a lot of heat. we put on header blankets but it didn't help much. if anyone wants we can probably make some more for pretty cheep.

The 3FE engine has its exhaust manifold on the left, the 24valve I6 havem on the right so heat shouldn't bother it.

The FJ80 is run via a distributor, so if your points go, then it'll definitely run rough and not be able to get you home. I speak from experience. Also, if you get water in the distributor, it won't run, but the Toyota models usually are sealed up tight.

I also have a 91 LC with the same problem. It has been my 8-year, recurring nightmare from HELL.
Once the outside temp goes above 80F and the vehicle is driven for awhile the EFI "blows" and I get the no start condition.
Just happened again today. Luckily I have the console filled with EFI relays, so I was able to get it home before having to turn it off again.
I am SO SICK of this fricken problem. I even had the wiring to/from the relay replaced several years ago to a lower gauge as recommended by a toyota tsb.
This fix did well for about a year then back to the same old story.

Any chance your electrical engineer friend would make another modded relay for my vehicle for some cash?

My 93 LC has had an electrical issue over the last 3 yrs that even the Toyota shop is unable to diagnos. I go thru a new battery about every 6-8 months and since battery is under warr, the shop simply diagnos the problem to be a bad battery and replace it. Alternator checks out fine, check engine light code give issue that is unrelated, batt take a death spiral send rig to have very slow idle (at times stalls at stop light), and eventually rig dies and does not start....my guess now is this it has something to do with this EFI relay. I've been searching this forum and have found some reference to the EFI than make me think that this may be the problem. Let me know if you all have heard of similar issues with the EFI. Thanks.
