Short Ram Intake - Kills Engine

Hello,

I recently installed an SRI on my 04 Corolla CE. After installation upon starting the car the engine would catch then immediatly die off while sending shudders through the body of the car. I swapped back to stock and it worked fine again.

Does anyone know what kind of a screw up could have caused symptoms such as I have described?

Thank you,
Asheron

maybe there is something stuck in the intake pipe that is restricting the engine from getting air?

this happened to me once while i was swapping out my intakes, hehehe
had a bag in the pipe and didnt know it, the engine died right when i started cause it was suffocating.

Reminder to all: Bags are not toys, they may cause suffocation. Please keep away from children and cars.

Negative. I have checked everything. The tube, and pipe, (and filter) are all clean.

Try unplugging the battery to reset the ECU, maybe the ECU has a bad reading.

Possibly the breather hose or leak on AFM.

sounds like a leak to me..

What is the AFM? Is that the sensor that I move?

When I installed it the battery was out for about an hour while I made absolutely certain everything was in the proper place. I'm thinking that its something either with a bad seal on the tube as you guys mentioned. (I'm going to test that tonight by using the tube on stock setup) Or with the sensor.

How would I fix a leak?

You removed the AFM sensor? No wonder its not working

wait... was the intake you bought meant for a 04 Corolla or was it a cheap "ebay" intake?? if it was meant for the Corolla it would have told you what to keep and what to take off.. but I'm guessing its not.. in which case you might have removed the AFM thinking it wasn't needed.

No I removed the AFM and moved it into the SRI :). I've been, in a general way, following this tutorial: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ab_parts_accessories/article/0,2021,DIY_13690_3081609,00.html for most of my work.

This is the one I purchased:

The final intake had the Air flow sensor in it and plugged in and a hose coming out of it which hooked onto the same place the similar hose from stock did.

thats weird, I have a SRI on mine (AEM) and it's fine... It's referred to as a MAF sensor (mass air flow) and it's very picky. Disconnect the battery, reconnect and let it idle for about 5-10 minutes without any accessories on.

they usually suggest removing the eci fuse for 15+ minutes(instead of disconnecting ground). then idle for 15 with nothing on then for another 5 with the ac running

Ok.. I know your engine is different from mine but they're both AFM sensored, so this is what it basically should look like. Except that instead of having a black rubber intake, you should have your metal intake, the AFM, then the filter. (don't worry about the "right there" part, I took this picture a while ago to show someone where the idle screw was located on a 4AGE)

Thank you for the picture :)

When you say remove that fuse... The car won't start without it will it? (I'll give it a shot as soon as I can). But according to your directions, I do the install, reseat the battery, remove that fuse, then try and start?

Do you know what the manual calls the ECI fuse?

I think he meant the ECU, true removing the fuse will give you the same effect as removing one of the battery cables.

sorry if i was unclear. I'm saying instead of disconnecting the battery to reset the ecu, removing the fuse is the "proper" way. When you open the hood, on the right where your fuse box is, look underneath the cover and you should see the eci 15A. After 15min or so put the fuse back in....then do the idle

in 04 rolla fuse = eci...not ecu

Ok I went through and removed fuse 11. (The manual refers to it as EFI 15 A). The only other 15 A fuses that are in that particular fuse box are for fog lights (which I don't have), a spare, and DOME 15 (audio, clock, lights).

I waited for about 21 minutes before reinserting the fuse. The battery was connected during this entire time. Leaving the hood open I went to start it up. The engine came up, headlights came on, then the engine died. I've checked that I have the sensor fitted very snug into its socket. There are only two things I can think of which could be causing this. The ECU or the nipple tube from the intake not being a really tight fit.

However I can pull on the tube without it sliding around at either connection point and it will actually pull the hardware along with it. (on the non intake part it pulls the hardware along. The intake is too secure)

I'm going to try and get a picture of my install for you guys. Perhaps that will help.

EDIT:

The moron whom manufactured this put the plug for the sensor in backwards. Upon reversing the direction it works. Looks like I'll be ghetto modding the intake to get it to fit right.

thanks....efi was it..my bad. You should idle with hood closed next time, because you are beginning the reprogram process(it will continue to reprogam for 100 miles or so) you want it to suck in air like it would with normal idle, and you don't usually run your car with the hood open which allows excess air

Ok I've had it in for a while. When starting up particularily with a cold engine it has a tinny sound. Also seems to have hurt accel and takes much higher rev's to swap gears. (Automatic). Overall a better sound but I'm not going just for sound.

I'm considering taking it out and making my own out of smaller diameter piping. Any thoughts on that?
