Asking the audience, 90 engine mounts

Hey guys, I was told by a toyota mechanic that the :( engine in my 4cyl, auto transmission car vibrated badly because of bad engine mounts, since there are five of them, which one. I went for 50/50 and changed the front one beside radiator, was not the one. Now which one do you reccommend I change, I'm too cheap to go for all of them. Thanks for any help.

As long as your mounts aren't torn, you can buy some stuff called Urethane Casting Compound and make your own custom urethane motor mounts. When the urethan hardens it will stregthen the mount, therefore not needing a replacement. do a search for "homemade Urethane Motor Mounts" and you'll find the writeup. When I get home in the evening I'll post a supplier addy as well as the link to the writeup.

yes my dads old crappy ford needed engine mounts, the car would sway big time on the highway, i know it sucks. i had to drive it sometimes lol

i think i might need some new engine mounts soon too... car kinda jumps when you put it in gear.

There are two mounts that have most effects on vibration: engine center mount and the front mount (near radiator)

Does anybody know how to diagnose which motor mount is the culprit for most given vibration/banging/clunking problems?

That would help out a lot of people who are wondering which of the mounts to replace! Doctor J, fredk, anybody?

I have motor mount issues, and I plan on replacing my front center motor mount, mainly because it's a torque mount (what I call them...) so it has to stabilize movement when driving and shifting, and I have this problem with my engine moving around a hell of a lot when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, ect.. And when I turn my car off, the engine clunks against metal as the rotating assembly is coming to a rest.

Is this the front torque mount or the rear torque mount?

A little bit in gear, but I wouldn't say it is bothersome...the bothersome part is when I'm driving and the car shifts, I can feel the motor kicking around under the hood and I can even feel the gas pedal change tension as it shifts because the motor is moving so much that it is pulling on the cable. Also, when I take the car from Park to Drive, or from Park to Reverse, the engine thumps around. Or when I shift from Drive to 2nd to engine brake, you can clearly feel the motor thunking around, especially when driving in 2nd gear and assertively pressing the gas pedal down--I think that the torque converter being locked in 2nd amplifies the issue.

I know the mount(s) are loose, but I don't know which one would be more important to change, the front twist mount or the rear twist mount? The rear is obviously harder to get to, so I would hope that the problem is with the front mount but whatever mount it really is is the one I'm going to have to change so no matter, I am just curious as to which one to buy first. The front mount has a crack or two in it, but it's not torn apart and unless you look closely at the mount you probably wont see the cracks because they're hairline cracks.
