2006 Toyota RAV4 makes world debut at Frankfurt Motor Show

(TORONTO, Ontario) – At the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, Toyota will be taking the wraps off the completely updated 2006 RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV).

The modern and rugged third-generation RAV4 is the latest expression of Toyota’s new design philosophy, Vibrant Clarity, which infuses all new Toyota vehicles with a bolder and more dynamic styling, balanced with premium comfort and versatility. The resulting RAV4 is an agile urban commuter that is also just as capable for those outings away from the city. RAV4’s bold and distinctive design is vividly expressed through strong and sculpted character lines. Compared to previous generations, the new RAV4 is more spacious and comfortable, and comes equipped with more features plus power and handling systems that deliver higher performance.

“The RAV4 is one of the most significant vehicles ever to roll off a Toyota assembly line,” explained Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. “This new model, the third-generation RAV4, promises to redefine the very popular compact SUV market segment it created when it was unveiled 11 years ago. Since compact SUVs account for fully 45% of the SUV sales in Canada, it is fitting that the RAV4 will be built in Canada when our Woodstock plant enters production in 2008.”

The third-generation Toyota RAV4 includes significant advances in performance, handling and safety, along with comfort, convenience and versatility.

Performance:
· Choice of an updated 2.4-litre inline 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i), producing 166 hp at 6,000 rpm and 165 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
· Choice of an all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine with dual VVT-i, developing 268 hp at 6,000 rpm and 246 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
· All new drivetrain, chassis, electric power steering and suspension combine to deliver best-in-segment performance.

Handling and Safety:
· Electronically-controlled Active Torque Control 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system for excellent traction and fuel efficiency.
· Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system and Traction Control System (TRAC).
· Anti-lock braking (ABS) system with Electric Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist.
· Hill-start Assist and Downhill Assist Control standard on V6 models.
· An optional seven-airbag system that includes dual-stage SRS driver and passenger airbags and – for the first time in a compact SUV – driver's knee airbag.

Comfort, convenience and versatility:
· Longer and wider body, with a longer wheelbase.
· Modular interior with flexible seating and more cargo space – including a second row seat that folds flat, and an optional third row seat that folds into the cargo floor.
· Clean lines and aerodynamic styling, resulting in a best-in-segment drag co-efficient contributing to excellent fuel consumption, quiet high-speed running and enhanced stability.
· Redefined comfort levels in a compact SUV, including standard illuminated cup holders, dual glove box and foot lighting, plus optional independent driver/passenger side air conditioning with pollen filters.
· Audio system with MP3 capability and convenient mini-jack for iPods and MP3 players.

“The Toyota RAV4 is already a favourite with drivers looking for the versatility and urban savvy of a compact SUV,” Wearing pointed out. “With this new model, the perfect companion to our recently redesigned Toyota Tacoma compact pick-up, we will once more be providing ample proof to Canadians that Toyota builds trucks that outperform in every situation, whether it’s negotiating rough terrain or navigating city streets and urban alleys. As we have demonstrated around the world for decades, Toyota Trucks ‘Never Quit’.”

I wonder what good good the third row will be in small SUV? Available third row in Highlander is tght and good for kids below 7 yrs. No real need for third row seat in RAV4, I think.

stupid marketing people. omg, we must be the first to offer than in the compact class so we're ahead of the competition. Unless they find some miraculous way of offering decent head and legroom in the 3rd row, it's just as pointless as a middle seat in a Prelude or Celica or RSX (which each have none).
