I just picked up a used Eclipse navigation unit. As you already know, these units require you to tap into the speed sensor wire for accurate navigation. All is fine except the protection circuitry on the wire for the VSS coming from the headunit has been cut off. I was wondering if this was a big deal. I've read that the circuit is basically a diode. If it is a big deal, what size diode should I get? Do I have to solder it on? What are the issues with not using a diode? I know a diode is designed to make sure current flows one way. Thanks.

I think pretty much any size diode will work. A good rule of thumb is you can never go wrong with a bigger diode then what's required.

Do they have to be soldered on?

I don't really know of any other way of connecting them and getting a good, solid connection.

Thanks. I was afraid you would say that. I've never soldered before but with all the wiring I do, I guess now is a good time to start. I've done the unrecommended ways of either twisting or crimping and never had any problems in the past. Too bad, a diode doesn't give you that option.
