so my neighbor is selling there 87 cressida to me for $250.
now needs some basic tuneup things but i want to know about transmission swaps. its automatic and i want get a supra 5 speed tranny.
will it be direct fit with my driveshaft or do i need to have it replaced?

Hey everyone! I used to frequent the pickup sub forums before I sold it. I've been missing Toyota since I sold my pickup last month and luxury since I sold my bimmer a couple years ago. So I thought what the hell, lets put em together.
Just traded my problematic 240sx for a 90 Cressida with 157k miles. Engine is strong and runs smooth, suspension is good and the body is straight; less some rust. Overall I'm happy.
The trans is a bit rough though. It slams into gear when you shift to either reverse or drive. And it does slip a little when accelerating. I have no idea the maintenance history, so I'm hesitant to flush/fill/change/whatever.
It doesn't leak, so I don't think fluid is low. However I haven't checked yet; it's cold and dark out now, I'll let ya know tomorrow.

I'm wondering what ya'll have done to solve your transmission problems?

Can new standard Oem cylinder head bolts for a Cressida be tightened to 98nm without them stretching and causing more head problems?

My mechanic is afraid to tighten them past 89nm as he says they might stretch and any more torque may crush the new head gasket.

Any advice appreciated.

i have an 86 cressida and i'm buying a 91 turbo supra tomorrow for the motor, tranny, diff and ecu.
I know you can use the 89-92 cressida cross member, steering setup, and front brake setup just by swapping it all over. Will the 91 supra be the same?
I'm asking because i'd like to have the bigger brakes and 5lug swap and then later down the line swap the steering from an x86 for the tighter radius because i'm building a drift car.

I have 1990 Cressida with 87k miles. Got it from my mom, original owner. Has always had this problem: when you accellerate from a stop it doesn't do it smoothly, rather is surges and you get a "jackrabbit start". If I feather the gas pedal, I can sometimes get it to start more smoothly, but not always. Anything I can do to make it better?

I'm a new member. I've had a 1990 Cressida (inherited from my mom, who bought it new) for about three years and I love it. Runs great (not great gas mileage though -- 19-20 mpg average). Only real mecanical problem is that I can't seem to get the headlights adjusted correctly. The low beams are way too low, showing only about 20 feet in front of the car. I've taken it to the mechanic who said they are adjusted as far up as they can go, and that this is a problem with lots of Toyotas. I just put in new extra bright headlamps (Sylvania 9004 SU/2), thinking that may have been the problem. Made no appreciable difference. Is there anything I can do?

I have a 1987 Cressida. I changed the Fuel filter recently and I think I might have put it in wrong! The filter was a Giant PITA to get out and back in. It is sitting vertically on the engine block. The rigid line is on top, the flexible line is below. What say you all? What happens if the filter is in backwards? The car still runs right now. BTW.

The Yokohama YK520 I got for my 91 Cressy (195/65/15) are near bald on the edges due to driving N California mountain roads (nice curves). I have almost 37K miles on them.

I now need a new set. Does anyone have recommendations for

1. Tire brand
2. inflation for taking lots of curves (in OK weather)
3. change tire size???

Some tires at America/Discount tire (where I got the Yokohamas) suggested were a Michelin Destiny or Avid.

Hey guys i was wondering if anyone could tell me if the parts from an 89' supra engine(The 7M-GTE) would fit the engine of an 89' cressida(The 7M-GE) Mostly just the oil pump and/or pan.

Hi, I just bought a 87 cressida, 112K miles for my son. Overall in very nice condition. I am doing some preventitive maintenance, fluids changed, plugs, filters, and now have got to the timing belt. I have a chiltons manual and am following that. However, I am stuck at the point of removing the crankshaft pulley (alternator) that covers the lower timing gear cover to remove the original timing belt.
Does anyone know if the crankshaft alternator puller is splined or keyed to the crank?
Any ideas on holding the pulley still while I try to break the 19mm bolt free? After 22 years of service it is a bit tight.
Any other advice on pitfalls or maintenance welcome too.

hello, my 89 cressida was rear ended recently, i need to locate a pair, does anyone know of any auto store in miami/ftlauderdale that sells cressida parts, parts for cressida cars are not readily available here in jamaica. i certainly dont want to sell my car i need to get it up and running again. thanks , hope i have some luck in here.:ugh3:

Split a water hose again yesterday.
I've fixed it up already but I thought I'd write it up anyway because it was a little weird.

There is a thin (3/8" inner) water hose on the 5M-GE that goes from the front of the inlet manifold and winds its way through a mass of other stuff - ie damn hard to get to with tools.
This is the second time it has split on me.

The first time was a few months ago when a welsh plug had a slow leak and the car overheated.
This hose must have been just that little weaker than the other hoses, so it broke under the build up of steam pressure.
Fixed the welsh plug (the hardest one to get to, of course) and replaced the hose from a spare 5M-GE engine.
All seemed good.

But when it split again yesterday it was packed full of sludge.
By packed I mean thicker than toothpaste and totally blocking the water passage.
Obviously the water pump was trying to push water into the blocked hose and eventually the hose gave up the ghost.

Naturally I'm trying to fix this on a Sunday afternoon when the Toyota parts counter is closed.
And the regular parts shop have nothing like it.
So in the end I cut off the bad part and used a 3/8" brass joiner to make one good hose out of two.
Cleaned out the sludge from all hoses nearby, replace a couple of other suspect hoses and did a flush job on the water system.
Runs good now.

The best explanation I can think of is that when the welsh plug was replaced it disturbed a lot of sludge lying at the bottom of the water jacket.
The local tap water isn't kind to engines either.
The sludge must have flowed through the system and eventually settled in my favourite hose :(
I had noticed a tiny bit of sludge forming under the radiator cap since the welsh plug was done.
Didn't think much of it except to make a mental note to flush the water system "sometime soon".

So, learnt another lesson the hard way - preventive maintenance is much better than reactive maintenance.
Lesson #1 - keep an eye on the water level.
Lesson #2 - sludge in the water should be dealt with immediately.
Lesson #3 - inhibitor is better than tap water.
At least this time around it was cheap :)

Ahh so i put my Beautuiful cressida into a fence the other night, athough there is VERY little body damage a rock seemed to have taken a number on my oil pump and pan, i have located a pan but was wondering if i could locate one for fairly cheap??? and any suggestions with cleaning out my coolant system, the original owner put stop leak in there and it hasnt run the same since, the car runs fine, just poor heeat circulation...
