Jeez... so a friend of mine has a 1997 Nissan Altima SE. It's an I4.

I just signed up for the Nissan forum to ask a question, and the last post was made TWO days ago. Like the 8th post down was on November 3rd. This is absolutely horrible. I don't think I'd receive any assistance there in a timely manner.

My friend bought this car with 80k miles. It's at 200k now. He's never changed the spark plugs, coolant, or transmission fluid/filter. Never changed any gaskets, radiator cap, or thermostat. The only things he's ever replaced was because he HAD to. Such as the water pump and front axle. This car has a timing chain, so no timing *belt* job required.

This car still runs... but very poorly in my opinion. There's oil everywhere from leaks... it shakes... transmission performance sounds terrible. He's not too concerned about the vehicle because he has a new Infiniti something that he got for his wife. But he's probably gonna be driving this Altima for 1-2 years still.

Today I gave him some Denso spark plugs I used for about 2k miles. Fortunately they fit his car.

I think he's ok with spending about $100 to do some general maintenance to keep the car running. So I was thinking the following:

1) Valve cover gasket, tube seals
2) Transmission gasket/filter kit
3) Transmission fluid
(he already has new coolant available)
4) Radiator cap
5) Thermostat
6) Front intake manifold gasket (I think that's what it's called)

#6 is there 'cause I seafoamed the car through the brake booster hose, and smoke was coming from under the shield covering that front manifold. I'm pretty sure that gasket has a leak.

What else can I add to this list that isn't very pricey? He doesn't want to spend too much money 'cause repair investments in this case just wouldn't be worth it.

He has three CEL codes. I do not recall the numbers, but I can find out tomorrow. One was cylinder misfires (replaced plugs). The other was something related to the knock sensor. The third was EGRC something or other. Maybe related to the leak through which that smoke was escaping?

Suggestions greatly appreciated. :D

I don't know about other parts of Canada, but here, I counted that about a car out of 20 has no DRL on, and the cops don't do a thinkg about it.

Usually cops love to dish out tickets, but either they don't know about this law, or they don't like it.

Solving problem approach with ODB 2 scanners:

I plan to buy an ODB 2 scanner, and want recommendation from those scanner owners regarding my approach:

As I read these threads, I see drivers face problem, see the warning light, plug in the scanner, retrieve the code or go to the nearest NAPA to get slapped, get the code and its meaning, come back to this forum, ask and discuss how to solve this problem.

So this is the trend:

Driving → problem found → blinking engine-check signal → frustrated → ODB plug-in → found code and deciphered meaning → back to this forum → still frustrated → find approaches to fix this issue → fixed the problem by replacing or cleaning sth → cleared the code → somewhat happy but still worried.

This is what I want to do:

Before driving for a long (or any) distance trip → check the car with an ODB 2 scanner → attack any symptom or problem if found → fix or replace any part at any cost, preferably with Denso or other OEM → worry free → re-check with the ODB 2 scanner for zero problem → broom for the trip.

I want to tackle the problems ahead and do some serious preventive maintenance. Right now my car runs fine, but I worry any kind of problem or error will show up while I am on the road – and it ain't safe standing by those swooshing cars.

Q: Will an ODB 2 scanner show symptoms or problems before (again, before) I get the red-check-engine-light? I want to shut off the problematic signals before (again, before) they occur, so I don't have to worry about any malfunction. Does an ODB 2 scanner have a “diagnostic function” instead of “error-found-now-fix-this” function?

Thanks for your input.

We have liftoff on the next Lotus Esprit. Finally. Scuttlebutt at the beginning of the year suggested it was taking so long because Lotus was pondering some sort of hybrid system for the car. More recently the talk has turned to three specimens from Toyota's book of engines, including the Lexus LFA's V10, and the word "hybrid" disappeared.

It's the V10 that interests us here, because Lotus is planning for the new Esprit -- or whatever it will ultimately be called -- to have 275-325 bhp per ton. Even if they keep it freakishly lightweight you're looking at a minimum of 400 horsepower, something Lexus' Yamaha-tuned lump could easily handle. We'll get the full picture in a few weeks when new Lotus CEO Danny Bahr unveils his long-term plan for the company.

For an 08 Camry....
Ok.....

I want to sell/get rid of my 16 inch wheels with hubcaps and get 17 inch SE wheels on my car..

1) How bad is that going to mess up my odometer?
2) Will I need suspension modifications?
3) How stupid will it look to have SE wheels on a base Camry?

Link below can show...
