hi. im brand new to this forum, so I apologise if this is in the wrong place.
I am hoping that someone can give me advice on a problem I am having with my car.

I got bought an 02 yaris petrol 1.3 about a month ago. it didn't seem in too bad condition and had a full 10 months mot. on the way home from picking it up, the engine management light came on, the brakes were also seriously funky.

I put it in for a major service, and had a lot of work done. suspension, brake pads, discs, coils, handbrake etc. brakes are now lovely. the garage tested engine management fault, it came up with p0171, fuel too lean in bank 1. the garage replaced the MAF sensor, and filled the car up with a cleaning solution. I drove around for a week with the light on waiting for the solution to work. they reset the light. I made it one roundabout away before the light came back on. I re contacted the garage, who are now telling me that I need to replace the cat, and im looking at £160 for the part.

the car appears to run fine. I have noticed an issue, which a local mechanic has agreed. the engine is extremely jerky when it is idle, and similar when I pull away. sort of like driving down a rough road without actually moving off. they also said the emissions rating that was on the tax disc was actually quite high, it was around 3500.

to be honest with you, I have no real idea what any of this means, so I am hoping one of you has had a similar issue and can tell me before I pay out for a really expensive part. I think im a little worried that I am going to pay out for a cat, and it wont fix that fault. I actually really like the car so far, im in love with the electronic dash, and its a really nice drive, so id like it fixed :). if anyone can offer any advice or guidance, I would really appreciate it.

I've loved Yarises since they came out, they're so cute! I want an '09 Yaris because it has better safety ratings than the earlier ones. I wanted to get one when I first started driving, but I didn't have the money for it so my grandparents gave me their '98 Ford Explorer. That car has a new problem every month, has put me in 2 near death experiences, and the gas on the thing is too much for a college student making little more than min wage.
The Yaris is smaller, newer, and gets great gas, plus if anything did go wrong the parts would be cheaper. However, my boyfriend said he looked up some stuff online and said it has like throttle problems or something. So I've come here to find out from Yaris owners if there're any major problems with the engine or anything. Any help would be super appreciated. :thanks:

Help

Currently my flashers(hazard lights) work but my turn signals do not. I have auto lock out on the automatic shifter. I think I might have a bad relay. Is the red or burgundy relay in the fuse box under the steering wheel the one I need to replace. Any suggestions would be super helpful.

I know that the yaris sedan was changing in 2014 and it will look like this:
http://strumors.automobilemag.com/fi...t-Shanghai.jpg

However, they also have a hatchback version.

Is this version going to be the new fourth generation yaris or are they gonna keep bringing the third generation. I am confused the newest generation changed just two years ago. I am guessing they are gonna change again so that the sedan and the hatchback looks the same. Someone knows what's going on ?

It's been a while since I've been on here. (My little echo rarely has any problems)
Anyway, I encountered an issue the other day and just thought I'd share since I resolved it. Figured it may be the solution to someone elses issue maybe.

Ok. So my car now has a little over 370,000 miles on her. The other day I noticed a hesitation while accelerating, like an instant loss of power/ jerk. It didn't do it much at first and the higher the RPM's the less it seemed to do this. Once I got the car up to 60/70 mph it was pretty much unnoticeable.

I couldn't figure out what it was. Thought maybe a vaccum leak. Nope. Maybe a bad TPS or CPS (didn't end up checking those), Thought maybe a bad injector or O2 sensor (didn't end up checking those either). I did try some fuel injector cleaner though but saw no change. I had a feeling it had to be a sensor or something because the motor itself runs great other than the intermittent misfire.

So I drive it in to work this morning. (1 hour drive each way) and aside from the minor hesitation/bucking/jerking while accelerating, everything went pretty smooth so long as I had the car up to highway speeds.
So I get off from work and start driving home. The problem seemed to have dissapeared completely for the first 3 or 4 miles, then all of a sudden it started up again. Only this time it had gotten much worse. I could no longer get the car to go over 70mph and when I came to a stop the car sounded like it wanted to die (but never did). It took forever from a complete stop to get past all of the sputtering and hesitation/missing to get the car up to speed. It would keep cutting in and out (the motor bogging down, then gaining normal power for a second or two and so on and so forth). So I decide to take it to a shop to see if they can diagnose it.

The guy hooks up his code reader and looks at the car for a little bit out in the parking lot. He doesn't really have any idea whats wrong with it either. All he could do was suggest to change the spark plugs and said that that was where he would start. Didn't seem like he wanted to fool with it so I just took it back to my house and decided to mess around with it some more and see if I couldn't figure it out myself. So I went ahead and listened to what he said about the spark plugs (even though I knew there wasn't anything wrong with them because I had just changed them about a year ago) So I'm changing them out and when I take out cylinder 1's coilpack I notice it's wet. It seems somehow water or moisture had gotten down into there. So I dried everything off and changed the plug (the old one looked fine but I changed it anyway) and I went ahead and changed out all the rest of the plugs too (they all looked fine as well)

So after seeing the water around the #1 spark plug and coil pack, The injectors are right in front of there, so I decided to take the plug off the injector and take a look.

Sure enough, I took the plug off of the injector right in front of the #1 spark plug (far left spark plug) and wouldn't you know it, it had water down inside of it. I pulled the plug off of the injector next to it and it hadwater in it too (but not as much)

I have no idea how water could have gotten down in there but it did. I took a Q-tip and used it to dry up all the water down in there. Put everything back together and took it for a spin and everything was back to normal.

I couldn't believe it. I figured I'd have to end up spending a crap-load of cash on a new sensor and possible labor to have a shop figure it out and fix it but it turns out to be something as stupid and unthinkable as that. Don't know how in the hell water had gotten down in there but it did happen to me and I just wanted to throw this (long) story out there as just another idea to check for if your having a similar problem.

It's a long-shot that yours would be something this simple too, but it is possible. I'm just glad I didn't end up shelling out a lot of cash. I love this little car. The most reliable, low maintenance vehicle I've ever owned.

Take care peeps.

The only issues we have seen is that the radio shuts off when a phone is charged(or any device), the brakes are pressed, the windshield wipers come on, or when shifting from park to drive(I assume this is happening when the reverse lights come on). I just discovered a cut off looking hose on my 2002 Toyota Echo, it's not connected to anything and I can't tell where it goes. It's located right above the exahaust manifold. It might be the AC drain hose but I'm not sure.

I found it by putting some seafoam though my vacuum line from the Brake Booster. The cut off hose started leaking seafoam and it dripped right on top of where the exhaust manifold ends and the seafoam started burning off from the heat of the exhaust manifold. I assume it's a vacuum line hose.

Can anyone look in their echo and see where this hose goes to? Maybe put up some pictures if you can? Thanks.
