So I just got a new car and I’m finally parting with my Cressida. I had planned on doing so in a fairly leisurely fashion. Then, I parked it in front of my house, off the street while my wife and I went out of town for less than a week. When I came home, the cops had had it towed. I’m guessing a neighbor called to complain about the “abandoned” car on the street, but of course they wouldn’t tell me. It apparently doesn’t matter that we park there all the time or that it wasn’t even on the road. So now I have to pay $60 for a tow and hope they don’t tow it again before I can sell it since we only have room for two cars in the driveway. If they do tow it again it will just take up space in their lot until I can sell it.
In any event, she’s been a good car and I’d be happy to see her go to someone who has the time & space to work on her. She’s got some problems (BHG) and some quirks. I’ll post pictures after I post bail for her (and the weather is favorable). In the meantime, she’s silver with gray interior: You know what a Cressida looks like. Here’s the good, the bad, & the quirky:
The Good:
-AM/FM/CD/Tape with direct connection for ipod w/ dock connector and new component speakers in the front
-I put in a relatively new (automatic) transmission a couple years ago.
-She runs.
The Bad:
-She has a blown head gasket and needs a new engine. Back in the spring I put that Blue Devil stuff in it to make it last a few extra months to seal it up. I know it’s not a good idea, but I was broke and planning my wedding so I didn’t have any money or time to deal with it. It worked for the interim, but I’m starting to see steam coming out of the tailpipe again.
-She leaks a little bit of oil (blue smoke at startup and a little smelly).
-A/C doesn't work (compressor is shot).
-The front bumper is cracked from a minor collision a while back.
-There is a little rust around the driver’s side tail lights, the result of spending 3 winters in New England (she was in Georgia before that).
The Quirky:
-The odometer reads 125k miles or so, but it has about 30k more because the odometer cable was broken for a while during a previous owner's tenure.
-The rear driver's side window doesn't work (it kept sticking and finally got stuck down so I removed the motor).
-The antenna needs to be replaced.
-The gas door has fallen off (but I still have it).
-There is white paint on the front passenger door from a time when I let a roommate borrow the car and he tried to simultaneously back the car out of the garage, talk on the cell phone, and open the passenger door.
-You can't open the trunk with a key and occasionally you have to give a good pound on the trunk above the lock to get the lever in the car to work.
-The hood latch is hard to latch, so I usually bounce on the hood a couple times to make sure it latches.
-When you take the key out of the ignition, sometimes you have to poke the ignition so it doesn't beep at you when you open the door.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it came from the factory with a clear coat to protect it. Even where the passenger door hit the garage door no paint came off and if I were still living there I'd take a picture of the garage door where the wood split pretty good. I did notice that the paint is bubbling just a little at edge of the rear passenger door and it seems to be leaking a little bit of coolant.
All cars have clear coat over the paint. SOP for a loooong time.
Yeah, but this one had some special protective coat listed on the original receipt. I guess it could have just meant the dealer charged them extra for the standard clear coat, but I didn't think so.
The landlady has been after me to get rid of this. If I can't sell it by the end of the month she's going to the junk yard for whatever they'll give me for it.
