Hi everyone. Has anyone here done a dual timing chain kik conversion on the newer 22r engine (85-95) If so what parts did you use. I would like to order Genuine Toyota Parts but I need to know exactly what sprokets chains and tensioner and guides to use.
some people have but the only company I know of that offers a conversion kit is LC engineering , it comes with eveything you will need but it costs $500.00.
DOA.com, puts out a kit for double row chain kits for 22re W/ metal backed guides on both sides. FYI: The 20R engines origionally came with the double row chains and were superb in longity, And then In yotas infinate wisdom they downgraded to the single row chains on the 22r and 22re's Which we all here wish they hadnt done. Anyway the kit supplys the the new timing cover as well as the gears etc, for the conversion, cause a stock timing cover from a 22re wont accomadate the old 20r double row configuration. I was considering doing this conversion, when it came time to redo my T-chain as the nylon chain guides suck, and I went with metal backed guides, so I could get a longer interval between changing again. Ted Stanwood @ Engnbldrs.com sells a single row kit W/metal backed drivers side guide for alot less than the other kits, But I know U seem to want dual row. Anyway its not a big problem, just extra $ from a standard {OEM Toyota} Retarded Kit!

I really want to use OEM parts its nothing against DOA or enginebuilder, but I had problems with Rock gaskets in the past and I dont really want to take a chance on the timing kit. I have invested quite a bit into this build and I want to use Toyota parts since they seem to go longer than the aftermarket ones. Let me know guys if you know any configurations on which parts to use to make it work

Jester, I dont think theirs any way around using the newer timing covers that comes with the 22r and 22re's cause you WILL NOT HAVE CLEARANCE! However, Aquire the timing cover from a 20R as long as its bolt pattern is the same, The 20r stock replacement kit for the double row should work! Mix together It might work! MIGHT! Just make sure the cam gear and the crank gear are installation wise compatable, which I dont see a problem, unless the crank is different or the cam end as well, also length of chain. Also I wonder If the chain tensioner is the same, for 18, 20 22's Ive never worked on a 18 or 20 R's when doing Timing repairs, just 22's so I dont want to assume it'll work, but looks like u might be able to pull it together, I understand your concern about aftermarket, but then again, theres alot of peeps here who use them from 3 different suppliers, When it comes to T Chain replacement. Im surprised U dont like metal backed guides, cause u state U want Longevity, and a OEM nylon guide will definitely wear out sooner than you think, and you'll be doing it all over again, Your allready prepared to mod your 22re with D-Row so why not @ least the good metal backed guides to save alot of future work. Remember also when these guides go, if your lucky, unless u catch it the first time you crank it up, it will wear hole in T-cover, If it jumps timing Your many dollars of investment in this rebuild will be trashed as these R static engines and head and pistons R trashed, If u dont get scoring in the cylinders> GET THE HINT! Just tryin to help ya BRO! Id seriouslly reconsider the after Kit, At least if it fails prematurely all U gotta do is replace T componets, instead of buying another block and rebuild Kit for entire engine! Good luck tell us how it goes when done! As Im personally interested in the mixture of these different parts and compatability.
