DIY – Extra Bed Rings

Items Needed:
  • (1) Part Number PT785-35054. Includes 2 D-rings, ranging from $19 to $30. The $19 is the internet price and the $30 is the average dealership price.
  • (1) T-55 Torx bit which will cost about $4
  • (1) Ratchet wrench that fits your Torx bit above
  • A device that will grind down the bed bolt (like a dremel or screw driver with a grinding drum attached.
  • Spray paint to paint over the area you just ground down.
First off, I am not taking credit for this DIY because many have done it but nobody has put all of the information together in a DIY. This DIY will take you less than 15 minutes to complete and will help you out a lot if you plan on hauling anything heavy in your truck bed.

Step 1: Taking your ratchet and torx bit, remove the two bed bolts towards the front of the bed.

Step 2:
The large washer that is on the bed bolt will not slip off by itself. An easy way to remove that washer is to grind down the threads just below it. You will not be needing those threads anyways. For this task I used a dremel with a grinding drum attached. It just needs to be ground down to the point where you can easily slip the washer off.

Step 3:
Clean off the area you just ground down and spray the area over with some spray paint to keep the rust off of the area.

Step 4: Head over to the parts you picked up from Toyota. You only need one portion of the items you picked up. All you need is the actual d-ring itself that is attached to the plate. The small washer, bolt, and plastic washer are not needed. Once you remove the small plastic washer, you can remove the bolt from the assembly.

Step 5:
Now that your bed bolts are done drying go ahead and slip the bolt through the hole in the d-ring. Now, use that large washer and put it on the bottom of the d-ring.

Step 6:
The final step is just to screw the bolt back into the bed. As far as tightening the bolt down I could not find an exact torque setting for it. Now you are done with a modification that should have come stock from the factory.

Excellent write up Grimm, but this brings up another "issue"..

i put my extra bedrings on the sides using the backing plates.

Do you need to next "modify" the bed mat so they front anchors are useful? It obviously isn't a big deal, just something that I happened to overlook until I saw the above posted photo.

Thanks

Yeah, if you're going to mount the D-rings using the bed bolts and you have a bed mat, you're going to have to cut holes in your bed mat for the d-rings to poke through.

Alright, I got another question now....I broke my ratchet wrench trying to remove the bolt. Did you guys use a breaker bar or something? And does anyone know what torque to tighten the bolt to?
yea, that bolt is pretty tough to loosen if you don't have a breaker bar. it definately helps if you have one or a metal pipe to give some leverage.

i don't know the required torque for the bolts but i used blue loctite and tighted it enough to keep the bolt steady. its a pretty long bolt with plenty of thread so i'm sure it won't budge once tightened down.

The only concern I have (perhaps wrongfully so) is that the front bolts actually hold the bed on to the frame. Placing a swiveling D-ring under there might weaken the interface between the bolt/washer and the frame in holding the composite bed to the frame. This doesn't seem to be the case with the rear D-rings mounting bolts as they do not hold appear to anchor the bed to the frame and are for tiedown use only.

Probably not an issue.....just something I observed on my truck. LOVE the idea though. Swiveling tiedowns seem to be more desirable than non-swiveling tiedowns.

I'll take pictures of where I mounted my D-rings in the front of the bed, and it doesn't use the bed mounts. There are 2 holes already existing in the bed near the front that I just expanded with a drill bit. From the underside of the bid you will need to trim some of the composite bed, as there is a rib that is in the way. Trimmed it with a dremel tool once that was done the backing plate had plenty of clearance and bolted the d-rings in place.
Didn't have to mess with the bed mounts and all is good.

Like I said, I'll post pics this weekend as I think it is a better solution then mounting to the bed mounts.
