So, three months ago when I bought my truck was incredibly dissapointed that it didn't have intermittend variable wipers. I asked around at the dealer how much something like this would cost and they assured me it would require a new stalk, a relay and a new wiper motor plus they would have to install it to keep my warranty.
hmm, well I didn't believe them. They may have been right for all i knew, but honestly, there was something in their eyes that made me believe they were simply wrong.
So I ordered a new stalk with the intermitted option from Toyota Dallas, waited for it to arrive here to Canada and set about with my tools and a few hours put aside. That was 10 minutes ago...

What you will need.
1 wiper stalk part # 84652-04141
1 Star screwdriver
1 plastic knife from a kids picnic set (mainly something strong but that wont scratch plastic)

Step 1:
Turn your truck on and move the steering wheel so you can get at the two screws on the left and right side behind the wheel. (sorry it is sideways)

Image

Step 2. Disconnect your negative battery lead (I did this before Step 1 and found I couldn't move the wheel to get at the screws). You may or may not need to do this step but personally I don't like air bags in the forehead and I am a safe kinf of guy.

Step 3. This is the hardest part of the whole thing. The upper and lower half are kind of held together with little clips. This is were my little picnic knife comes in handy.

Image

You will have to play with the steering wheel position and fanagle it a little bit. Gently pry along with seam, call its mom some nasty names and it will come, just have patience. Or, take a break, drink some beer and come back and do it.

Image

Step 4. Remove the wire harness from the back and there are two small tabs holding the old one it. Look closely at the new stalk and you will seem them. The big one is a little harder to push but the whole stalk will simply slide out.

Image

Step 5. Slide the new stalk in, hook up the wire harness and put everything back together. Hook up your battery. Turn the key and look!!! You just paid $100 bucks for something that you never thought you would be so happy about!!

Works like a charm!! Plus it is entirely OEM

I ordered my stalk a few days ago. You don't think the dealer was right about needing a different wiper motor do you? I had thought about this before. I'd hate to burn the motor up. God knows how much they would charge for a new one!
Kenny, relax! ;)

All the motors are the same. The switch just controls the rate at which the wipers are activated internally...usually through a small timer board or resister/caps...no worries about bruning anything up, and Toyota will be none the wiser if something ever did happen (although it won't)

Dcaplan,

Thanks for the wiper info. Ordered stalk and it is in transit.

On another note. I have a good friend in Virginia Beach from Guelph, Al MacIsaac. He was the general manager of the local AHL hockey team, Norfolk Admirals. They move out to Ill. this spring ... he'll continue to work out of Virginia for awhile.

I'll give ya'll a shout when wiper stalk is installed.

Question on the part #:

When I enter the part number for the switch, several options come up. Do I have to select any particular one to be sure to get the intermittant wiper control, or is selecting "'US built" for my '07 4x4 sufficient??? I don't want to order the switch and receive the same one that 's already in my truck.

Thanks in advance!

When I ordered mine I had about 5 choices which of course none of the choices fit my 2WD 2.7L AT Regular Cab. One thing that they all have in common is the stock #.

Did you ever go up to a parts counter and ask for instance for a driver's side inside door gidgit? Well, before you can even get the part you have to play 20 questions:

1 - year
2 - model
3 - engine
4 - transmission
5 - 2WD or 4WD
6 - number of doors
7 - AC or no AC
8 - Does it have a CD player
9 - tinted windows
10 - blag, blah, blah .....

Bottom line ------ all "gidgits" end up having the same stock #.

You'll get the right one.

Thanks for the quick responses! So, you both are saying that this particular stock number (84652-04141) will always yield the intermittant wiper stalk, rather than the simple one (w/o intermittant) that I now have in my truck?
Yes Sir ...... as far as you know! Just kidding. Not to worry! That is the stock # I ordered, as were all the other options. As I said, mine is in transit ... due in tomorrow .... once installed I give you a shout.

Ok ... so I order the new stalk ... follow your steps ... just can't seem to remove the "old" stalk .... the more I look at the "old" stalk it just doesn't seem to want to come out .... it doesn't appear to look like the "new" stalk ... what was your experience on taking out the "old" one ... I know you said it was difficult but I am afraid (yes that's right) to yank on it too much ... any suggestions?

There is one smaller tab and one larger tab that must be pressed in to remove it. I found the larger one harder to press and ended up using the end of a screwdriver very carefully. It then just slid out, I popped the new one in and that was it.

if the stalk itself, the outside, looks like the new one, it is likely the right one. This is the same stalk that fits the camry's, some Lexus's and a few more vehicles I am sure.

Take your time, you will see the two tabs, and everything should go okay.

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed your pictures ... got the two plugs removed okay ... I just can't remove the darn assembly.

I hate to be annal (it is just the way I am) but these "tabs" .... gosh I spent an hour on it this afternoon .... (I use to repair reactor plants so I know that I am more than able) ..... are the tabs on the stalk body or on the steering wheel assembly where the body attaches? .... looking at the new stalk with the "handle" on the right hand side (as it would sit on the steering wheel) there are two "male" stubs on the left ... I asume that these slide into something ..... getting dark so I'll have to wait until the morning .... better yet ... swing into Virginia Beach and I'll buy you breakfast.

The two tabs are on the left side, the inside, of the stalk.

All they look like is two pieces of flat plastic with a bard on one side.

I wish I could swing by, but I am in Guelph Canada, a little bit of a drive.

Maybe someone else can jump in a lend a thought or two to help this gentleman out?

I'll give it another shot tomorrow morning. Thanks for all your help and patience. I'll let you know how it comes out.

I think I once told you that I'm a friend of Al MacIsaac from Guelph. He now lives in Virginia Beach and is General Manager of Chicago's AHL club. I think that our former coach, John Brophy, was also from Guelph.

Easy install works great. Thanks!!

Thanks Dcaplan! Parts delivered to my door from Toyota of Dallas for less than half the price of my local dealer in BC Canada (who said it couldn't be done, by the way). Installed Cruise and int wipers in less than an hour. 2008 Tacoma double cab 4X4 Auto V6. You guys rock!
