So, three months ago when I bought my truck was incredibly dissapointed that it didn't have intermittend variable wipers. I asked around at the dealer how much something like this would cost and they assured me it would require a new stalk, a relay and a new wiper motor plus they would have to install it to keep my warranty.
hmm, well I didn't believe them. They may have been right for all i knew, but honestly, there was something in their eyes that made me believe they were simply wrong.
So I ordered a new stalk with the intermitted option from Toyota Dallas, waited for it to arrive here to Canada and set about with my tools and a few hours put aside. That was 10 minutes ago...
What you will need.
1 wiper stalk part # 84652-04141
1 Star screwdriver
1 plastic knife from a kids picnic set (mainly something strong but that wont scratch plastic)
Step 1:
Turn your truck on and move the steering wheel so you can get at the two screws on the left and right side behind the wheel. (sorry it is sideways)
Step 2. Disconnect your negative battery lead (I did this before Step 1 and found I couldn't move the wheel to get at the screws). You may or may not need to do this step but personally I don't like air bags in the forehead and I am a safe kinf of guy.
Step 3. This is the hardest part of the whole thing. The upper and lower half are kind of held together with little clips. This is were my little picnic knife comes in handy.
You will have to play with the steering wheel position and fanagle it a little bit. Gently pry along with seam, call its mom some nasty names and it will come, just have patience. Or, take a break, drink some beer and come back and do it.
Step 4. Remove the wire harness from the back and there are two small tabs holding the old one it. Look closely at the new stalk and you will seem them. The big one is a little harder to push but the whole stalk will simply slide out.
Step 5. Slide the new stalk in, hook up the wire harness and put everything back together. Hook up your battery. Turn the key and look!!! You just paid $100 bucks for something that you never thought you would be so happy about!!
Works like a charm!! Plus it is entirely OEM
