Im just wondering if this is normal. Ill be cruising along (any speed) and ill ease on the gas the truck feels like it hits rumble strips then accelerates. It doesnt feel like or sound like the engine is missing or anything. Feels like something in the trans. Its smooth shifting most of the time but it does happen a lot. And no, there isnt anything in the road. (5.7L DC 4x4. 500 miles on odo.) Just got the truck new yesterday. Should I get it checked? No warning lights on.
I'd get it checked out man. Go over to tundra solutions and do a search for trans problems, there are hundreds of posts about different trans problems. Don't take much of what those guys say though...they do seem to go alittle overboard!
The "Rumble Strip" phenomenon is very common in the new Tundra 6 spds. Toyota is desperately trying to figure this out. It is most likely a torque converter problem, but they don't even know yet if it's a mechanical or electrically (software) based problem. Toyota is offering owners with this issue a complete new tranny, but are warning them they have a pretty good chance of getting another tranny with the same problem. So they are giving the owners the option of a new tranny now, or waiting for them to figure it out and making a permanent "fix" so the new tranny will not be a problem. This info is all based on reading personal testimonies from owners with this issue over at TS, so please, don't shoot the messenger.
Great! Just the news I wanted to hear. I read a post on TS that said it went away after 1000 or so miles. Guess its back to the dealer. Cant wait for them to tell me its all in my head. Any suggestions on how to deal with the dealer. Maybe they will be cool.
Going back to dealer monday. 180 miles away. They need the field tech to look at it before any work can be done. Hopefully I can reproduce the results With the tech in the truck. Ill keep U posted.
Well, I wanted one of the first Tundras in my town and now I'm regretting it. My transmission did that rumble strip thing at 3K miles and they replaced it and now at 8K this one is acting up. My engine sounds like a diesel for the first 2 or 3 miles. Both driveshafts have been replaced and the drivers seat came apart. I just about to lemon law this truck.
Took the truck in today. Looks like im getting a new transmission. They told me it should be about a week or so for them to get it in. This better fix the problem. Had to sit there 3 hours for them to tell me to bring it back in when the transmission comes in. They didnt have an explanation for what was causing it. I asked if there was any harm in driving the truck with this condition and was told no. So how do I get a free platinum warranty?? Just ask?
Just met a guy 2 hours ago that is having a hard time with his BRAND NEW Tundra. He had the rumble strip phenomenon and took it in to the Yota dealership here in Ocala, Deluca Toyota. they first checked out the driveshaft by removing, balancing and replacing....no help. they went straight for the transmission next, and he ended up with a new transmission as of tonight. I told him that if he were a TN.com member that he would have known his problem before he went to toyota and it might have saved him some time.... I invited him to come on the website.... he has the 5.7L doublecab in desert sand color.

Just got a call from the dealer saying the trans came in. Bringing it in on 25th. Told me that if they couldn't fix the truck in one day that I may have to fit some of the rental car bill. They said since I lived so far away (180ish miles) that too many miles would be put on the rental. Called toyota and made a formal complaint with them. Told them everything thats been going on.
Buckstom did they offer you the extended platinum warranty or did you have to ask for it. I wasnt offered one but I didnt ask either. Wasnt thinking straight, I was too mad.
That sucks buckstorm, sorry to hear bout your truck! I've not had any problems with my DC SR5 yet. I've not had the rumble strip thing, but I never really shift gears either, I always keep the truck in Drive.
Do you have to shift the gears to test for the rumble strip trans problem?
