2005 Echo Hatch HID install problem

i purchased a set of HID lamps for my 05 echo hatch, however when i install it according to the instructions provided with the lamp, i plug the electric source to the original lamp plug and the HID flickers which i think is due to insufficient electrical power, so i try to take power directly from the car's battery, the HID light up properly but the ballast starts to have smoke coming out. any idea what the problem is? has anyone tried installing HID on their echo? where can i find a reliable source on the net on how to install HID on an echo? thanks

no i didn't, how does a relay work? im a complete noob, does it come with the kit or do i buy it separate?
