Thule Pod: Not Fitting, Hits Tailgate

Hey all,

I have a Thule Atlantis 2100 pod, it's the biggest one they make I think. I have tried to mount it to the cross bars on the roof rails, but as far forward as they will go is not far enough; the pod interferes with the tail gate spoiler when I try to open the tailgate.

Anyone else having this issue? It looks like the roof rails are pretty short in general, not allowing as much forward distance as I might think. I'm thinking I might have to modify the pod...

Thanks!

same problem

hey, i've got the same problem with my Yakima SpaceBooster, too long overhang in the back so it hits the spoiler when the rear tailgate or glass is opened. I'm thinking about putting new mounting holes in the Yak box, but nervous as to how it will stress the box and the bars....

Canada Thule on Highlander

I see that the Thule Atlantis 2100 is 92.5" long.
In your opinion would the Spirit at 90.5" long fit, and I'm guessing the Atlantis 1800 would fit easily at 84" long?

Steve,

the trouble is it isn't necessarily the overall length that makes it unusable, on either brand of pod, it's the distance of rear overhang past the back cross rail. does that make sense? so if all 3 had the same overhang past the back cross rail, then none of the three will work, this all taking into account that the rear cross rail is in the position furthest to the back. if that doesn't make sense I can try to clarify... hope that helps.

It's actually the distance from the back to the "front" cross rail that makes a difference. I have a yakima bar setup (lowriders) with a Thule 2100 and Thule smaller box (not sure of the model number - it's in the garage). The placement that is forced by the front bar inserts is what pushes the box too far back. I've still got movement for the back bar - but will need to modify the box to move it forward. I've cut the rubber on the Yakima Lowriders to move it up the the absolute farthest forward I can, but still the tailgate hits. I may modify the box, but am also concerned by the structural change that would occur. I talked to "Rack Attack", Oregon and they said, "Yep... that's a Toyota Highlander problem."
So far it's one of the very few complaints I have with my '08 HH.

you've got it right, thanks for further clarifying it for everyone. i am going to resort to modifying my SpaceBooster because I don't want to get rid of it. I'll keep everyone posted on whether or not it turns out well =).

We're considering an '08 Highlander and carry a cargo box in the summer. Ours is the squarish shaped Thule Excursion. We got it for our Escape because it doesn't cover up the moonroof while in use. Has anyone tried the Excursion on the HL? We could buy a new box, but would prefer to use what we already have.

The real problem is that the roof rails start too far back on the roof (at the b pillar). If Toyota had made the rails longer and start further forward, this wouldn't be a problem. I don't know what they were thinking.

I don't have a cargo box but I had planned on getting one. Ugh.

Also, from looking on the web, the Yakima Skybox may be your best bet. The box doesn't have holes for mounting, it has a track system that should be more flexible. Also, the way the back of the box is shaped, it should be a bit less likely to interfere with the rear spoiler.

Finally, using Yakima (or Thule) cross bars will probably allow you to get the whole thing more forward.

As an update, I will be modifying my Yakima SpaceBooster this next week to fit my HL, so I will try to take a couple pictures and outline what I did if anyone is interested. We'll see how functional it is and how well it holds up once it's been modified.... more to come next week...

Canada Thule Spirit

I'm picking up a Spirit roof box in a couple weeks. I'm pretty sure it will fit and not interefere with the spoiler. I spoke with Thule, they gave me the following measurements:
Back of box to rear mounting point -
Spirit 18.5";
Atlantis 2100 25",
1800 20.5",
1600 16.5";
1200 19".
Min & Max spread between mounting points -
Spirit 23 5/8" to 38 1/2";
Atlantis 2100 23 5/8" to 37 1/4";
1800 23 5/8" to 37 1/4";
1600 23 5/8" to 35 1/4";
1200 23 5/8" to 37"
I'll post my results once I have the Spirit on my HL.
PS the Thule Spirit is typically $900 in Canada. I bought through REI.COM with a coupon, paying $480. Will be going for a short drive to Missoula to pickup.

Thumbs up Atlantis 2100 Pod Mounting Tested for 5K!

Guys,

The roof rack on the 08 Highlander is simply too short F-R. That said, I have been able to mount my Atlantis 2100 at the rear bar just fine, and am clearing the tailgate. It's the front bar that won't go far enough forward to meet the front clamps of the pod. The best thing to do for a pod shopper, would be to measure the max & min dimensions of the Highlander rails F-R, then the min dimension of the rear rail to the tailgate + the resulting range of front rail motion...then choose your box.

I AM indeed using my big bastard Atlantis, but I did the following, which is not entirely recommended if you want to remove the box frequently(nor is it the 'proper' mounting procedure!):

1. Bought some 1/4" thick closed cell neoprene foam, 1" wide, sticky on both sides. You can find big rolls of it at www.McMaster.com I think I paid $25 for the roll with plenty to spare.

2. Lay the box on the car's crossrails, align the rear of the box to not hit the tailgate & clamp it down.

3. Move the front cross bar all the way forward.

4. Mark a 4X pattern of holes inside the pod base, to be drilled later. These hole centers should be spaced at the edges or a bit wider than the F-R width of the rail.

5. Remove the pod, and drill your holes inthe pod base. I used a 1/4" bit, which allowed clearance for the ties I was to use. At Napa Autoparts(aslso known as 'Riebes') I found some heavy duty long 50lb. test zipties in Black.

6. Layup the foam tape on to the front rail, I used two rows of it along the L-R crossrail length, covering the top of the rail. Leave the top wax film on the top side of the foam for now.

7. Re-install the pod on top of the car, tightening the rear clamps, ensuring tailgate clearance, and L-R alignment (looking from the front & rear of the car).

8. Remove the top layer of the foam tape, effectively sticking the pod down to the rail.

9. Install 4 zip ties per 4X pattern of holes, two in a criss cross, and two in a F-R orientation, holding the pod down to the crossrail.

Wala! It's not the best way to go, but if you already have an expensive pod that WON'T fit the poorly designed too-short roof rails on your shiny new Highlander, this setup actually doesn't show any of it's ghetto-flavour, and so far we've been using it for 5000 miles on many trips full of skiis with no problems. Make sure you watch the zip ties for 'cutting' marks from ski & snowboard edges, else cover the ties with quality black gaffer tape(heavy duty cloth-type duct tape) to protect.

If I could afford it, I would indeed buy a new pod that would mount correctly, but heck, this works for now! And the Atlantis 2100 actually just barely clears the front windshield line, staying over the car, so you never see it or a shadow.

There was good and bad.
After phone calls to Thule about where the mounting points are and my measuring...
It looks perfect on top of my HL but I cannot fully open the rear hatch.
If I figure out how to post pictures I will.
Bright side is I can leave on my HL and it does fit in my garage.
This was another thing I was not sure of before purchasing.
The Spirit box creates no noticible noise while driving (120-130km/hr and some stiff headwinds).
Knowing what I know today I would buy the Thule Spirit again.
I'll put some 3M paint protector on the top of my spoiler and the back of the Thule and l will live with the fact the rear door only opens about 3/4 the way open.
