Installing Weapon R Secret intake w/ cold air feed

So I know there's about 400 threads with installing intakes, but I have a two'fer here, I'll show how to use stock mounting parts for a wonderful cold air/partial rammed air feed, you can do this on the stock intake too, and it doesn't require any aftermarket parts save one hose clamp and a flat head, and youll get a cold air feed:clap:, I put an aftermarket k&n filter, took out the silencer and used a bigger tube, but at first I was using stock parts. I'm doing this tomorrow so I'll take pics and post, hope for a sunshiny day. :D

well it may not do a huge increase in horsepower or any at all, but it definately will increase throttle response and fuel economy, colder air is better, and since this is partial ram air it makes airflow more, if you top it with a K&N or TRD air filter, take out the silencer, and increase tubing size, you definately will have a good little CAI, and then you'll notice a little horsepower increase(i noticed a great mpg increase and throttle response increase)

i am a little confused here, are you using just the stock parts to do this ? or any weapon-r parts as well ? or running a hybrid between the two ? cause ur title thread says weapon-r w/cold air feed, and the simplest way to do that wud be to install the weapon-r intake, then route the provided ram air kit to somewhere for the cold air.

I'm showing both using weapon r parts, and the system I was using, using mostly stock parts. And putting it in a location that's cold air/partial ram air, and in a good mounted spot that should and could have been done from factory.

Just got done installing and I'm a happy boy , I'd say the trickiest part of the instal was to get that tube bent around the front with it still clamped on and not touching the break booster or the ECM! WTF they coulda made that a little better, and the pcv tubeong was kinda a joke, I'm gonna go to Kragen and pick up some new thicker stuff that will work. I havnt really noticed a whole lot of gain yet, maybe a little throttle response, but my ECM has to get used to it first, so I was driving around with WOT for a while :D, I noticed a huge sound increase  along with my amazing pipes I was turning heads more then Usual. I'll post up pics once I can steal some Internet somewhere(I'll head to my friends house in a few), and I took lots of pics of my ride, you can check it out on cardomain by searching kmfracing530. I got both my beautys on there :D. Well happy posting and hope you all can figure out how to use this cold air feed to the best use.

Heres pics

little plastic piece to kinda deflect air sideways into it, theres two of them, one on each side, and they're normally straight, they dont break if you move them left or right, and it serves as a directional wall.

and with that i conclude my genius finding, and hope you all are soon on your way to a very nice cold air/ partial ram air feed(its not actually ram air, i know, dont jump down my throat.), i tried to detail as much as i could(i dont have all the stock pieces, i wish i would have pictured it all when i first did it) if any questions post and ill try answering. the new weapon R is AMAZING, it sounds throaty kinda "turbo"ish the way its choppy sounding on the intake, and now that i took a lil drive down to auburn(about 50 miles round trip) my ecu is pretty set and loving the new air its getting. and im loving the smoothness of acceleration that has been added, and im still getting great mpg. happy posting.

Ooh I could see that happening, or even better getting a 90 and then pointing it in that direction, thus also making easier, shorter tubing. Makes me want to move my battery to my trunk now..

So I think my last thread I made kinda got put to the wayside because I labled it weapon r install, so here's a link to the same thing, because I also explained and took pictures of how to use your stock intake parts to get a cold air feed/partial ram air feed(no not 100% ram air) so here it is

thAt looks pretty cool. I was using the weapon r Sri with the ram air kit but lately I switched back to stock intake and used the stock tubing as my own ram air kit cause I forgotgpw to put everything back together. Haha. I aimed it right where that tow hook looking thing is. I also took out the white box. I'm a little confused on hiw you got that plastic tube to fit with the stock intake and what you used that stock plastic part for. I was looking for a way to extend that stock tubing but I just can't get it to fit with the airbox. Any ideas?

Well you can use the stock tubing, use my set up, and it will all reach, if you have all your tubing in front of you I'll try lableing it the best I can so you can have a visual, the tube I was using aftermarket wasn't the ram air kit that I got with the weapon r system, it was an intake tube from Kragen, (spectre part no.?)and that fit perfectly around the rectangular square like opening on the airbox, by anyways, so stock parts, you got the square/rectang piece that attaches to the box and has the spongy tube on it, and then the parts you'll need to attach to the bottom screw are the curved horn lookin piece with an opening and there's a little piece that clips onto that in the grooves, both are the stock parts and in my picture it shows them clipped together. Now if you get underneath your car by driver fog light you'll see the screw pretty much right off, and it holds a little plastic shield on, the easiest way is to take that screw off and bend the shield out of the way so you can reach your hands in there and also put the horn piece in there, now when you attach the stock plastic piece with air tube onto the box, route the spongy tube down to the fog light, it should almost barely reach(this is why I went aftermarket, plus it was bigger tubing and didn't have holes in it from where the silencer was)now this is where you'll hoseclamp the spongy tube to the end of the horn piece(make sure you hi've it all pointed the right way first), now for mounting the hornpiece the right way.. if you notice, the horn piece has a long little screw mount on it from where the clip was that held it on from factory, and that's how it's so perfect for this, because you put it uderneath the screwhole and then put the plastic shield hole over it and screw it down. You should be good, I still have my stock parts laying around, I might take an inventory picture and detail everything a little more with the stock parts. If you have any more questions I'll answer them and I'll take pics and post if you don't quite get the wording. I have a question though, whydid you switch back to stock setup? I've noticed so much more throttle response and power with the weapon r, and even with my cai I made with my stock airbox the weapon r does the same thing, so I prettymuch convincedyself after I heard the sound from the intake( intake noise is one of my favorite noises from a car) that even if it felt the same I'd keep it, the only way i'd get rid of it was if my performance dropped. It sucks in just about as much air from my cold air piping at the bottom as the stock airbox did, plus it's sucking air in uptop, so it's really a two'fer, and I've noticed more low end throttle response, mid range torque and a bit more high end WOT hp(that's cuz it's sucking air like crazy at WOT)

Do you remember the part number for the k&n tubing? I switched back cause the weapon r secret weapon intake isn't carb legal so I didn't wanna risk it since I drive by so many cops. Also the ram air kit that came with the intake doesn't get much airflow cause there isn't much room to bend and connect the opening of one side to the filter. I am still a little confused as to what you did with that plastic stock thing that hooks to the end of the stock tubing. Can you post up some more pictures? Ill try and posts some pictures of what I did

It's spectre part no. 9751 :) I just took some pics, hope they help, I'm posting them later today when I get to a computer. And yeah it was really tricky to get that tubing bent around, as I posted in my other thread, it would be interesting to get a battery to trunk adaptor and move the bat, and then get a 90 and turn the cone straight.

yeah sorry bout that, had to route through a myspace account which decreased the quality and size :( posting pics now

heres what it should look like attached.

heres the plastic part
Image

heres the screw that holds the plastic+where you will be mounting the tube
Image

heres the "horn piece" attached underneath
Image

heres a front picture of same piece
Image

heres how the tube would look routed towards the bottom
Image

heres the tube going down
Image

heres the setup on the weapon R

heres my engine bay now :)

hope this helps solve the what parts where questions. :chug:

When you say should there be restriction, I'm not quite sure what you mean, on the weapon r setup?or the stock box setup? And no why would you want restriction..if I wanted restricted airflow I'd stuff some socks in the tubing and put on a fram.( which is basically the same thing..) And I'm not worried about it, I have all my stock parts, if it ever comes time way later in the future that I actually have to smog it I'll switch out the box for the smog test. And I'm not worried about cops really, they have bigger fish to fry, as long as I don't give them a reason to want to check under my hood, check ground clearance, and exhaust db's by pissing them off and/or racing they won't need to give out fixit tickets(plus being in the military helps, my military ID is the first ID card in my wallet, accidental glance meathod works great)

That's a pretty nice setup, I'd say the only advantage mine has over it is that my design is partially rammed, and has a cleaner look than a zip tie ;), although they work and I won't knock it, they just tend to look tacky, especially on a 09+ vehicle. The worst I saw was when I worked in a shop for a while, a guy brought in his 05 charger(which was 1 year old at the time) and he had bailing wire holding up after market mufflers, and duct tape wrapped around his intake and cone, holding it in place and plugging up silencer holes :facepalm::headbang:

i know this thread is old, but i just did this mod. Avg MPG (manually calculated) 29-31MPG. Did this 1/2 way through a tank and got 32.2MPG. Now after 1 full tank with the mod finished today I got 33.3 MPG. Not only am I getting some better power and easier shifting, looks like MPG is increased too!

THANKS FOR THIS DIY!!!!

Oh yeah, it works Great doesn't it? Are you using stock filter or an aftermarket k&n\trd? The biggest thing I noticed wasn't that I gained a Ton of power but that my fuel economy shot up.

I went out in the garage and started this project on the Matrix. Its about 115 in my garage still, so needless to say, I quit. I don't know that the 1/10 of a cent per mile is worth the effort at this time. I could fire up the portable AC in the garage, but the cost to cool the garage down would negate any fuel savings. Maybe when winter comes around.

The MPG increase is not something that is for sure from this mod anyway as the MPG can vary greatly in each tank anyway. On the same trip one week I could get 35, the next I could get 29.
