This is now the second time it has happened ...
The ABS and brake light come on when driving a normal
flat dry residential road.
Pull over park, turn off engine, and the lights go away ... but ...
When you start engine lights stay off and then you cant
put tranny in drive {locked in Park}.

Do the off engine and on again a few more times and
WaLa - it works and you can put tranny in drive and drive on.

Any ideas ???

Note - Temps were near or over 100 when this happens

Mine has done the same thing it has doe this 3-4 times. I called 3-4 dealers and they said they have not seen this before. I scanned the cars computer and no codes were found or stored. Tee problem is the dealers would have to see the light on to fix the problem and when you restart the car the lights go away.

Ours has done this several time taken to dealer, showed it to the service guy Robby, he sys ok I see lets let the tech check it out. 2hrs later they state no code, but readjusted the brake pedal, now it does it more often still no codes. About leave it in their manangers lap. fix it or or replace with a new model,

Everyone knows there is the warranty !
But it is somewhat useless if as per the 2 prior posts tech says no problem found.
There must be some bug somewhere that is a low P(x) of occuring.
If the brake pedal was adjusted and increased the rate of problem - that is a hint !
For the two posters who state same problem w ABS and brake light ...
did you have problems with putting in drive after restart ??
Mine made me think I would have to tow it in for a tech to say no problem found.

My wife had this happen today after filling the tank at the gas station. In addition to what was stated above, she said that the antiskid light, (the car symbol with the sqiggly lines) was also on. Her car has 47,000 miles. How many miles on the cars above with the problem? Also, her car has the 4 cyl engine. I don't know if this makes any difference.

The anti skid light also weant on when brake light went on in ours.
Ours is 09 Venza with 21K and 4 cyl.

Local Austin dealer says they know the problem last month.
They replaced brake light switch assy and said it was open circuit.
Part 91 84340-09010 and open code 832011.
No prob since.

I don't know if other years are affected but while looking online for a switch I noticed that the same switch is used through 2010 and it is used on many if not all of the Toyota cars.

My wife and I switched cars today so that I drove the Venza. The lights came on at a red light about 1/2 way to work. I picked up a switch at the dealer on the way home and changed it tonight. It took about a minute to change, very easy. The part number was close to what EL_PIC had but without the 91 on the front. It is 84340-09010 and cost $63. plus tax. I'll let you know if the problem returns.

Mad mad mad!!!! Ok they said they found the issue, the Brake light switch, they replaced it. Went to pick it up, and the drivers front tire has a gash in it. Fresh clean rubber, since we pulled in Monday morning from a trip to Norfolk VA, to Robins AFB in GA, and took it to the dealer that Monday afternoon. Had to leave it again they of course are trying to say it was already there. OK think about this orver 1100 miles in 3 day round trip, and it has a clean cut on the side. That is all the way down to the cord, there is no way we drove highway speeds with that gash, for that far and its still clean rubber inside!!!!

Could not stand it any more lights were comming on daily. Took the Venza to the dealer with the lights all lit up. I got a call about 1 hr later and sa said its ready, we replaced the brake light switch. when i started the car before i took it to thr dealer i kept pressing on the brake till the lights lit up so the sa could see it fo him self.

Based on all the great info in this and another thread,I ordered a new brake switch and adjusting collar, 84340..switch..$84cdn:surprise:..collar 84345..$8cdn. I took the existing pieces out,the switch sure is a cheap looking assembly. I ordered both because it's clear the old ones were not fitting snug together, easily going out of adjustment. Parts in tomorrow.

So, I decided to take the existing brake light switch apart. All it needed was a good cleaning with contact cleaner and adjust the tension on moving part of the contacts. There are 2 circuits normally open/closed,which change depending on the brake pedal being pressed/released. I reinstalled the switch (very curious mounting into the collar...I used the new collar),checked the adjustment/play drove for 15 minutes..all clear. I'll keep you posted.
I have an aviation electronics background so this was straight forward. Take the switch apart at your own risk:facepalm:
