is the 98 T100 or the Tacoma (both SR5) better? in terms of horse power, torque, four wheeling abilities etc?

Tacoma's the Ticket
I don't know much on the T-100 but i have a friend of mind that has one equiped with the 3400 V6. The same V6 motor that is put in the Tacoma(mostly PreRunners & 4wd) and 4Runners. I Believe there was a V8 option on the T-100 (not 100% sure since the Truck lived for a Short period of time) . I Would Go with the Tacoma since it's lighter than T-100 and the T-100 wasn't made long and it will be hard to find parts in the future.

The T-100 never had an optional V8- that was one of the main reasons it didn't last very long. The T-100 and the Tacoma both had the same 3.4L V6 in them, so it is a matter of what you want in the way of size. The T-100 has alot more interior room and more room in the bed than the Tacoma, but they both have the same payload and towing capacities b/c of the 3.4L V6 engine. You are also able to get the TRD Offroad Package on Tacoma's (starting with the 1998 model) which rides a lot smoother offroad. Don't forget that some Tundra Models (up to the 2004) have the 3.4L V6 in them as well (and most of them are fairly inexpensive). That would be a good option if you are looking for something newer and still possibly under warranty.

If I were looking now and had the choice of either one, I'd go for the one in the better condition. Mine is a '94 T100, which has been fantastically reliable. It has gone everywhere I have pointed it without problem. I just wish I had waited a year and gotten the 3.4l 6 and extended cab.

whichever fits!
For me there was no question. At 6'5" I needed the room of the T-100. I have a 1996 4x4 with v6 and 5spd. It has done well over the years and still has the original clutch at 130,000. I love this truck. While my friends spend $$$ on fancy cars and grand new "pretty" trucks that they wash and polish and pamper . . . I just get in my old reliable T-100 and DRIVE!
