Talking WHISPERS: Toyota Planning New 250-hp Scion tC

Congrats guys ...

TOKYO — The grapevine in Japan is whispering about a hot, new 250-horsepower pure sport coupe from Toyota, coming next year, which would also double as a new Celica in Japan.

Japan's moles say they've uncovered secret plans for a new pure sport coupe from Toyota, apparently based around the Scion tC. The unnamed model, due in 2006, has 2.4-liter power, like the tC, yet is good for a reputed 250 horsepower.

Toyota is aiming at Honda's stellar Integra Type R (the more exotic, faster version of America's Acura RSX). And the idea would also be to inject some extra speed and enthusiast muscle into the tC.

America will soon bid farewell to the Celica, so this new 250-hp sport coupe would be a welcome replacement. Across in Japan, the talk is Toyota would rebadge it as the eighth-generation Celica.

While the Celica as we know it is 1.8-liter, the story goes that this new model would jump up to a special high-performance 2.0-liter motor, which may be called 2AZ-GE.

What this means to you: Biggest problem with Scion? No power. Thus, this super tC sounds super-cool; let's hope it makes it into the showrooms here.

if it's a 2.0L wouldn't it be eithr a 1AZ-Ge or a 3AZ-GE (assuming it even has a GE head, which i've read toyota is moving away from because it's not as useful with newer technologies that are out)

tc has already taken trhe celicas place in america. its doubtful to me that that toyota will be producing 250 horses out of any naturally aspirated 4 cylinders.

Yeah that does seem a bit odd for a NA lil 4cly to produce 250hp with no sign of a FI. I would love to check out the engine on that car once it gets produced. I wonder how much thi NA 4 banger is going to cost....

So if Toyota is not bringing the Scion line to Canada.. I wonder if we're gonna get this car as a Celica.. or if we're even gonna get this car at all.

A little bird told me that this rumor is untrue. I could be wrong, but that's the hearsay I heard.

Rah? 250hp 2AZ?

The only rumor I've heard is that TRD is supposely releasing a two stage supercharger kit. One will boost power to 200hp, and the other to 300hp. The later sounds a little unrealistic to me... can anybody verify THESE rumors?

IMO the TC as a celica replacement is a joke, everything about the car is inferior right down the Base Camry motor under the hood, WAY too much glass for a sport compact car. and a real Celica has a motor that ends with 'GTE'

That's a pretty funny comment considering previous gen Celica's have ALSO had base Camry motors (ala 3S-FE and 5S-FE). Not to mention the only Celica to have a 'GTE' was the GT4 (aka All-trac). Good luck finding one of those.

I don't mind the tC having the base Camry engine since it's cost effective for Toyota to use the same power plant in several platform (ie 2AZ-FE = tC, Camry, Solara, RAV4). I just wish they bumped the power output a little more (6hp over the Camry doesn't cut it).
