T100 MT Shifts Hard

Hi everyone;

Just purchased a clean 1995 T100 4WD 3.4 L Manual Transmission w/ 72,000 K mi. Its overdue for a timing belt so its going into the shop right away.

Problem is, it shifts hard. To get it in first gear almost always requires double clutching and 2nd...5th needs to be eased in. On the other hand the clutch feels good, no chatter, releases at mid travel, etc.

Does anyone have experience with this? Do I need a new clutch, or could it be an adjustment / fluid level problem? The dealer quoted me $300 for the timing belt and $1200-1500 for a clutch job. I'd like to postpone the clutch for a while if possible.

From a Toyota manual:
1) check the clutch pedal freeplay.
2) bleed the hydraulic line. Might be air in it.
3) Master cylinder might be damaged
4) Release cylinder might be damaged
5) Input bearing worn or damaged
6) Bad clutch disc or diaphgram

You should be able to find a competent mechanic to replace the clutch, it that is what it needs, for less than that quote.

Thanks for the information. On this basis I'll steer the dealer away from the shifting problem when he replaces the timing belt. It may only need a lever bushing/seat .

I replaced my clutch for less than $400 without turning a wrench..

I bought a new clutch on eBay for $160 and a local mech put it in for $300..

I checked some other websites and evidently this model is susceptable to cracking the clutch mounting bracket, causing shifting problems.

Lo and behold, I found that the mounting bracket was cracked. Furthermore, if left unattended the firewall then cracks causing a BIG problem.
(If this happens to every T100 manual shift, why wasn't there a recall??)

I'll go after this first, then replace the shift lever bushings as suggested.

I think they were waiting for enough complaints about the seat belt retracters, first...

Gents;

Finally got the cracked bracket replaced. That was the problem, 100% improvement. At first, I thought I might be getting in too deep, ending up with a tow to the dealer to bail me out. But the dealer wanted $455 for labor to get started,.. that got me motivated. Aside from ordering parts (~ $85) and research...it took 2- two hour evenings and plus some minor linkage adjustments and all was done using standard hand tools.

Lost a lot of pedal due to the added backing plate, and I also added internal reinforcement washers as the replacement bracket actually looks inferior to the original. Both plate and washers tending to push the master cylinder away from the clutch pedal. I've only got 5 threads made up on the adjustment shaft, but does the trick for now.

I'm going to post a step-by-step when I get a chance, maybe on a separate thread.
