Lotus Elise
The 2005 Lotus Elise, 1.8L I4 w/ 190hp.
I heard it uses the 1.8 Toyota 2ZZ-GE engine.
Does it share the engine with the Celica GT-S and the same 6-speed manual transmission?
If it does, why is the Celica so slow?

It uses the 2ZZGE, but Lotus tweaked it a bit to coax a bit more power out of it. But it's still a 2ZZGE.
The curb weight of an Elise is 1984 lbs (per lotuscars.com) and a Celica GTS weighs about 2700-2800 lbs.

You are way off on the curb weights.
Celica GTS weighs only 2522 lbs
Corolla XRS weighs 2650 lbs
Matrix XRS weighs 2800 lbs
Lotus Elise weighs 1900 lbs
That makes Lotus Elise do a 0-60 in only 4.7 secs.
Lotus picked the 2ZZ GE engine for the best power to engine weight since it is one of the lightest G series performance engines Toyota has ever developed and obviously for it's very good reliability record.
Fact:
When Lotus tried to convince Toyota to license the 2ZZ GE engine to them, Toyota refused to agree. Lotus sent a delegation to Japan to convince them in person. Eventually, Toyota budged and licensed it to Lotus.

I heard the Elise has terrible quality, and the only thing good about it is the engine. Is that true?

You think that's special, you should see the turbo or s/c Elises.

The elise is a fairly simple car. It doesnt have much luxury items or complicated systems. Not even sure if it has traction control. Less things to go wrong than most cars. Reliability should be fairly good.

Not only is the Celica heavier, The elise was designed to be very aerodynamic. That also shaves seconds off it's time.

saw a yellow Elise yesterday moring on Dixon rd, above highway 27. I think it had NY plates. Seen about 5 of them up close in person over the last year. Sweet machines, but thet are very expensive to buy. If only Lotus put Toyota engines in the mid 80's Esprit, i'd have a few of them by now if that were the case....

Please don't tell me you just figured this out? Lotus bought the Celica GT-S engines from Toyota to make it as their own and with the Elise's curb weight, close gear ratios and handling, it's a true sports car. BTW, I believe Lotus announced this in 2003.
And about the price, you can buy one for $38,000-$45,000. I would get this car over a porsche boxter or any other car just because it's a Toyota powered Lotus.
