Hey, if the fumes kill you, atleast you were smelling something good.

They better not get rid of the new car smell.

yep, our new car stinks

The new one, picked up on Saturday s-t-i-n-ks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Noah

like the old one did 11 years ago when it was new.

And we do the same to it: We close all windows and run an electric air cleaner inside for a few days. This is not to filter out particles, but to breaks down a lot of the volatile chemicals and reduces the smell quite well by the ozone our air cleaner generates. Air clleaners should not do this, but ours has too high voltage inside and makes ozone. Caution if you try this out, , this ozone and even more the accompanying nitrous oxides (too little for any boost, don't ask) are not good for breathing.

One more difference, the new car also stinks on the outside. Much more than a new engine's typical wax and oil smell. rather like overheated rubber. On Saturday, we took it home, filled up for the first time, noticed the stink coming in through the ventilation and went straight back to the dealer. The salesman checked and said some smell of new rubber/plastic is normal. Well fine.

On Sunday, when I pushed the engine some on an uphill for the first time, there was unmistakably a burning rubber stink. I stopped on the curb and checked but could not see smoke. And no, could not be from the tires, this van is too heavy for a burnout. Most likely some rubbery part is too close to the exhaust and now got damaged by overheateng. The dealer will get it back to check it out and replace the damage or find and remove a part that did not belong there.

one week later - smell almost gone

the Ozone running day and night , except when we were driving, has done its part and broken down most of the interior agressive smell.

The engine -related burning rubber smell has not recurred. Today, at the dealer, we had the car up on the lift and checked along the exhaust system - nothing made of rubber was close. However, on top of the valve covers, I felt a sticky goo on the warm engine, which was not there yesterday when I checked the cold engine. The mech said this stuff is for corrosion protection. It may have been that some had dripped on the exhaust.

So far so good, our car smells much less new now and we start enjoying it.

Whenever I smelled something bad (automotive) in my old Corolla GT-S I always checked it out. Unless I had recently had the oil changed and the rundown dripped onto the exhaust manifold, in virtually every case it was some other stinky car on the road. Even when I had over 350,000 kms.
