Thumbs up How To: Swapping black door handles for color matched versions (info & pics)

Got an '05 or later SR5 or TRD Off-Road Tacoma and want color matched door handles?

You can use the following steps switch your door handles in less than an hour. Be careful with your Taco and have fun!
-- Eric

Tools that you will need:
-- Ratchet with extension
-- #30 Torx bit
-- Small, flathead screw driver
For double cab rear doors only:
-- Medium size Phillips screwdriver
-- Stiff putty knife or door panel removal tool
-- Razor blade

Parts that you will need:
-- (2 or 4) Handle assemblies -- Silver part # 69211-AE020-B4
-- (2) Front lock "caps" -- Silver part# 69217-AE020-B4
-- (2) Rear door handle caps (req'd for Double Cab only) -- Silver part# 69227-0E020-B2

All eight pieces can be purchased from trdparts4u.com (866-477-3398) for ~$112 plus shipping.

UPDATE: You can now easily order sets of color matched door handles without having to know the part number (regular/access cab and double cab). Check out this link for addt'l info (same dealer as trdparts4u.com, just a different URL - both are for Toyota of Dallas)

Front door handles:
1) Open the door and remove the black plastic plug on the door jamb.
2) Loosen the gold colored Torx fastener that is behind the plug, by using a #30 Torx bit. The Torx fastener will not come out completely, or fall into the door, because it has a retainer clip which holds it in place.
3) You should now be able the pull the lock mechanism out.
4) Carefully take a small flat screw driver and pry the plastic lock cover off.
5) Slide the front part of the handle back and out.
6) Insert the new door handle into the opening of the door, slide it forward, and into position.
7) Snap the new lock cover onto the lock mechanism.
8) Insert the lock mechanism into the door, and tighten the Torx fastener (not too tight).
9) Front door handle swap complete!

Rear door handles (requires removing the door panels):
1) Open the door and remove the three Torx fasteners on the door jamb (#30 Torx bit), that hold the door latch mechanism in place.
2) Use a medium Phillips screw driver to remove the screw that is at the bottom of the door pull.
3) Use a small screw driver to open the small plastic "flap" behind the inside door handle.
4) Use a medium Phillips screw driver to remove the screw that is behind the "flap".
5) Remove the black plastic plate that is located at the top, back edge of the window frame. This can be done by lifting one edge, and gently pulling, until the white plastic clips release.
6) Carefully remove the white plastic clips from the window frame, and snap them onto the black plastic plate.
7) Slide a stiff putty knife (or door panel tool) under the bottom edge of the door panel. Gently lift up to pop each door panel fastener loose. Move the over and repeat the process until all fasteners on the bottom and sides of the door panel have been removed.
8) Carefully remove the plastic anchor fastener by slightly pushing in the center button, then lifting the outer ring. These fasteners will break if you pull on them without depressing the center.
9) Lift the door panel up and out of the window channel.
10) Peel the top corner of plastic sheeting near the latch mechanism back. You can use a razor blade or Xacto knife to split/separate the black adhesive from the plastic.
11) Reach into the door, push the latch mechanism toward the outside of the door and pull it back into the door frame, to expose the Torx fastener that retains that back door handle "cap".
12) Carefully use a #30 Torx bit, extension, and ratchet to loosen the gold colored Torx fastener (don't drop the Torx bit in the door). The Torx fastener will not come out completely, or fall into the door, because it has a retainer clip which holds it in place.
13) Pull on the main door handle, then gently use a small flathead screwdriver to pop the door handle "cap" out of the door.
14) Slide the front part of the handle back and out.
15) Insert the new door handle into the opening of the door, slide it forward, and into position.
16) Snap the door handle "cap" into the door, and tighten the Torx fastener (not too tight).
17) Re-attach the latch mechanism, re-seal the plastic sheet, and attach door handle & black plastic plate in reverse order of above steps.
18) Rear door handle swap complete!

Great job!

Awesome job! Excellent pics! I am definately going to do this handle swap.
My question is there are no rear door handles on the Access cab so I was
wondering what is meant by:
"(2) Rear door handle caps (req'd for Access Cab and Double Cab only)"?
Thanks

Ahhh, my ignorance of Access cabs is showing.

Since I now know that there are no handles on the rear doors of Access cabs, you obviously won't need those rear handle assemblies and caps, and can do the job in less time and for less $$...

I've now updated the info in my original post, to reflect the fact that rear door handles and caps are req'd for Double Cabs only.

I can handle it!

I just ordered new Silver handles for my Access Cab from trdparts4u.com.
If you have an Access Cab you only need the 2 front handles and caps.
$23.13 ea. per handles
$3.89 ea. for caps
shp. $9.99
Total cost with shipping $64.03
The contact number for TRDparts4u is: 1-866-477-3398
Thanks again for an awesome write-up 57HotrodVW!

Did you mention you are a TN member? TRDParts4u is a vendor here. May or may not help the price for you, but it does help out TN.

No I didn't but I did mention where I found the post. I told the lady that took my order about TN
and said I would email her the link to read, which she appreciated, but she seemed unaware of TN.

Glad to help. Since you've only got two handles to swap, I'll bet that it'll take you less than 15 minutes to complete the job.
