Locker Mod Done
Well I got the locker mod done today, and it works perfectly. It also seems to lock faster now, as others had reported over at TTORA. So now I can use the locker in 2wd/4wd hi/ and 4wd lo. A big thanks to Tacosupreme and Comattack over at TTORA for figuring this difficult puzzle out. Check it out locked in 2wd.

Awesome, do you have the details on exactly how to do it? I want to do this mod later.

Good mod, does it affect the warranty? stevenh563, it's called the Grey Wire mod. Click on the sticky at the top of the page for DIY mods; at the bottom of the list, click on the link to the Custom Taco tech section and look for the grey wire mod.

The grey wire mod is only for the older Tacoma's and will not work with the 05+ trucks. There is no grey wire on the new trucks, the 05's have a different, more complicated setup all together.

Yes, I saw mention of that on the CT site... just curious, many older models are still in warranty, especially if extended warr. was purchased.

Very cool. But how and when would you use this in something other than 4L?

Sand, mud, deep snow, water crossings, pretty much anytime you need speed to get you through and you want to ensure both rear wheels are putting down power.

So I finally got around to doing this mod this weekend and at first I did not think it worked, as it would never lock up. I drove it back and worth in the driveway and it never locked up. So I put everything back together, leaving the mod in place. The next day, as I was running ot the store, noticed the locker light and ABS light came on, and sure enough the backend was locked up. So it ended up working after all. My only concern now, is that I can not get into 4lo. I can go into 4hi with out any problems, but when switching to 4lo, it just beeps and flashes 4lo. I've tried switching when at a complete stop, moving slowing, no luck. Any ideas?

My locker takes a long time to engage as well. I have the trd pre-runner..... is there a trick to getting it to engage asap???? other than engaging while in neutral....

You don't have to be in neutral for the locker to engage, that's just for 4lo. For the locker it helps to press the button and drive forward slowly turning your steering wheel one way or the other. Basically you have a drive gear and what is commonly refered to as a dog clutch in the rear diff. The best way I can describe it is the teeth on the sliding clutch need to match up with the teeth on the gear to lock the axles into place with each other. Sometimes you just have to get the wheels to turn at different rates for a second so everything will line up.
