Your opinion on a Navigation / DVD

Hello All,

I have decided to do the double Din Scoshe in my 05 Dbl Cab.

What Eclipse would you suggest?

Can they all be made to play while the vehicle is in motion?

Double dvd or dvd with hard drive?

Thank alot!

Mike Grasso

I just got the AVN5500 in this weekend and I love it. It's very easy to make it play while in motion, you only have to ground the parking brake wire and you're all set. The AVN5500 is a CD and DVD drive. I didn't go with the double DVD because it doesn't do any good unless you have other monitors hooked up to it. You can't play a movie and use the nav on one screen. And I didn't think the hard drive was worth the extra money, I'd rather just burn MP3 cd's to play in the CD slot.

From what I have heard Eclipse decks are alright. They got nice features and all but they don't last very long compared to Pioneer and Alpine.

Alpine just came out with a double din DVD/TV setup.

Here is the link: http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/product...model=IVA-W200

I think it's sweet!

^Yup, I've been looking at the Alpine IVA-W200 and IVA-D310. Still can't decide on which one I want. Anybody know if you can watch dvd's while driving or do you have to do a little modding?

I got the Alpine IVA-D300, the older model.

You DO need to bypass it to watch TV/DVDs.

I have it setup so it does it as soon as your turn on the TV.

You will need a PAC TR-7 module to do it which is like $15 and it's very simple to install.

Or you can wire up 2 toggle switches and do it manually everytime you want to watch a DVD or something.

I did the PAC module because I did not want switches or anything like that around, I wanted a CLEAN install and the PAC module did the trick!!!

Wow, I like that setup as opposed to the double din. How it slides in and out. I've seen some that look like it doesn't tilt vertically like yours. And it sits up in the same angle as the dash, slanted. That looks sweet.

For the money, and ease of installation, I don't think you'll find a better deal than the Eclipse. You don't even have to use a wiring harness, the eclipse plugs right into the stock wiring along with the steering wheel controls. The only wires you have to splice are the VSS and Reverse signal wires. I'm not sure about the reliability issue mentioned on the Eclipse unit, I really haven't heard anything negative about one yet, but I don't have a lot to base that on, just from what I've read on this forum and customtacos.

I also have the eclipse backup camera which is a simple one wire installation that plugs right into the back of the unit. It's a really cool little add on to the system.

I agree with you there bro.

Eclipse units are easier to install and have a lot of cool features.

Cam2Xrunner might be able to chime in here and give his opinion on the reliability of Eclipse headunits.

I personally like Alpine because I have never had problems with their CD headunits or DVD/TV units.

I'm saving up for the Eclipse AVN6600. It's Sweet. It doesn't have a HDD, but I'd rather use an iPod as my HDD anyway. The AVN5495 has a HDD, but it rips in real time, which means that if your CD is 1 hour long, you have to play the whole CD through for an hour while it rips to the HDD. That's just rediculous. It would take forever for me to rip all my tunes the HDD at that speed. I say, get the AVN6600 and an iPod. That would be the perfect combo, plus it's cheaper than the HDD Nav units.

Yeah, I like the Eclipse the best. But if I was going to for an all out active install the IVA-W200+PXA-H701+NVE-N872A+ combo would be badass.

Get an Eclipse unit if you want an easy to use all in one very factory like setup. Just buy at an authorized incase there are any bugs in the next two years.

Does anyone know if the dual play capability on the 6600 is only good for an additional monitor? That's the only reason why I chose the 5500 over the 6600 (I don't have an iPod, I just burn MP3 cds instead), because having two DVD slots doesn't do any good unless you have two monitors to play them on. The 5500 has two slots, one CD and one DVD. Can you actually use both DVD slots at the same time on just the head unit of the 6600? Like can you use nav in one slot and play a movie in the other, without using a second monitor?
