Hello all,
Newb here, (not new to Toyotas though, I've got a 86Runner and a 97 LC) My father-in-law recently bought an 85 EFI 4Runner, all stock 287kmi on the chassis, ~80kmi on the rebuild. It died out on him last week and we've been trying to get it going again. First it was throwing codes 6,7 & 11. Replaced theTPS and ECU, (TPS was gummed up) from an 86 parts truck we have and that cleared 7&11. We then replaced the signal igniter in the distributor, distributor cap, rotor, coil and battery. Still getting the same thing, it sounds like it's about to start then just dies. We clear the code 6 - RPM Signal, but after a few retries it comes back. We verified we are getting spark to the spark plugs and verifed the coil is working as well. The next step we were going to try is to replace the entire distributor. We also swapped out the EFI relay under the dash. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance |

Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual. This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.
Any Public Library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells,Clymers,Bentley and Toyota repair books.
