2007 Rav4 Tow Rate

Hi its been a while since I posted a question. Im about to buy a 2007 Rav4 with a V6 and a tow prep package the salesman and the brochure say the V6 can tow up to 3500 lbs. Im towing 2000lb, in New York I dont need trailer brakes on 2000lb or less. Can the Rav tow that weight without trailer brakes. I ask this because I have a 2004 Subaru forester that the dealer claimed could tow 2000lb and after I bought it I come to find out that Subaru says you can tow 2000lb only if the trailer has bakes on it If it doesnt than it can only tow 1000lb.

I think 2k would be OK with this car. The 4 cylinder may be a little weak on hills.

A few issues are braking, a cars tendency to wonder at higher speed, cars weight plus suspension. Remember the trailer has a tong weight the must be supported by the cars suspension. The manufacturer comes up with a recommended maximum towing weight. This does not mean the number can not be exceeded (provided any state or federal laws are met) but there are limits to safe towing.

Suggest you do a Google search to find the Toyota web site then a contact point and your questions. This info must be in the owner’s manual. Do a search on trailer towing and read a little. Often during a third party car review, the issue of towing and a cars performance is also judged.

Check your owners manual, page 344, and you will see that it says the you need electric barkes for a trailer over 600 lbs. Yes, ouch.

I almost freaked out when I saw that. Doesn't mention it in any of the brochures either.

I went to the dealer and I looked at a owners manual and like you said on page 344 is the yellow caution box that states if over 600lb trailer brakes are required. This sounds nuts to me, if a vehicle has a 3500lb tow rating why would you need trailer brakes on such a low load

Lawyers, I guess... And marginal brakes!

Sounds absurd to me too. Maybe the brakes aren't up to the task of slowing down the whole rig and so they put the onus on us to provide the brakes for the trailer. If they had a 2000 lbs limit I could live with that but 600. Ouch!!!

There are some adds running on TV about some Toyota truck ,a Tundra I believe, towing and stopping a 10,000lbs load. I wonder if they have that little yellow warning label in the owner's manual. It's certainly not in the that add I saw on TV.

It wasn't in all of the brochures and phamplets I read about the RAV4 either.. Or the TV commercials.

Did you buy it yet??? Don't until you check it out more.. The official Toyota 29 piece hitch will cost about $400 and the wiring harness to make the electrical conncetion another $110. Installed I think it is $700 - $800 US. Check it out first. Checkout the sticky on rav4world, 4.3 series, exterior. My question is, will Toyota warranty their chassis if you use a non Toyota hitch?

Eckhard.

Hi , after some research I have come to the conclusion that its a liability disclaimer. If you read any of the other owners manual [ tacoma, tundra ect ] it also states a ridiculously low tow rate without trailer brakes and theses are pick up trucks. From what I have read on this site ill say that im going to get the rav4 with v6 and tow prep. and not worry to much about trailer brakes. In new york the law is any trailer that weighs 1000lb unlaiden must have trailer brakes and any trailer with a gross weight of 3000lb loaded must have trailer brakes. Now for my other issue I would like to see the toyota trailer hitch, I want to see what makes a trailer hitch worth almost $400

There's extra plates that screw to the unibody structural members to reenforce them. There was some images in the rav4world forum.

Trailer hitch

Hi Just joined the board, My wife and I have a 2007 Rav V6 no trailer Pkg. Toyota dealer wants $900.00 to install a 3500 lb hitch. I priced hitches from local trailer suppliers and can get a Reece or Hidden Hitch brand for $250. Picked up a Toyta factory trailer harness with ACC module. There are no instructions. Has anyone done this install? Info on this would be appreciated. Eckard I would sure like a copy of that PDF hitch install info.

'07 RAV 4 brake inadequacies

Gentlemen,
This is my 1st post. Nice to finally find a RAV 4 forum.
After readiing many reviews on the '06/'07 RAV 4 and owning a V6 SPORT model I can agree with the reviewers.. To wit: The new RQV 4 DOES have mediocre braking and any trailer over 600 lbs. DOES need brakes for your safety.

Plus, our new RAV 4s appear not to have a logrithim in the stability control program for trailer towing, as do some other SUVs.
I don't know if the Lexus RX 350 twin to the RAV 4 has bigger front brakes but if it does I'm buying some & installing them. At a minimum I'm getting new carbon ceramic brake pads from The Tire Rack very soon.

I have a 2007 Rav4 - made a big mistake and purchased the 4cyl. instead of the 6cyl. I would (now - sigh...) like to pull a small travel trailer and was wondering if there are any modifications that I can make to my Rav to allow this? The limit (as the book says) is only 1000 lbs and that wouldn't even be an empty tent trailer. What a STUPID dunce I was! I just never thought I would want to tow - now, of course, I do.

Canada What hitch to buy?

Hey all. Just purchased a 2006 Rav4 V6 Sport and I need a hitch.
Is there any advantage to the Toyota installed hitch as opposed to an afermarket such as Hidden Hitch, Draw Tite or Reese. They want over $1000 for the Toyota hitch, Aftermarket is around $400.
Thanks.
