V-6 oil change

Today I stopped at a "Jiffy Lube" to have the oil & filter changed (5K miles). They told me that only the "Dealer" could change the oil because the V-6 have a special " internal oil filter" instead of the standard spin on type.. huh??? Anybody experience this situation????

It's a cartridge element filter which any oil change place should be familiar with.
Cartridge element filters have been around for the last few years and were common on old vehicles.
Try another oil change place.
That Jiffy Lube must have idiots working there.

Stay away from quick oil change places and their high school drop out workers. Go to a real shop or use the dealer.

Welcome to the club friend

Yep, I've experienced it twice now and would recommend taking it to the dealer for an oil change. The prices are about the same anywhere I go here in OK. Also, Camry and Avalon owners experience the same issue. Alot of the shops haven't invested in the necessary tool used to undo the filter nor have they purchased the cartridges. Sometimes it sucks having the bigger motor. Good luck though.

A Toyota tool at a cost of $45.00 from the dealer ship is needed. The filter elements can be purchased at the dealer for about $5.00 each. Actually their system to drain the filter is neat and oil changes are easy.

What is this "tool" at the cost of 45$ that you are talking about. I am one of those guys that refuses to go to the dealership, or anywhere for that matter, to get my oil changed and I will be changing my own oil. Are you talking about the wrench that goes over the cap to remove the filter?? Just curious what you are talking about.

The Napa 65mm filter tool works great on the V6 filter housing.

I have an 08 Limited V6, and I was finally able to crawl under and take a look. I will use just a standard 3/8 drive ratchet to remove the filter. Who would pay 45$ for a tool from toyota, when most people have this in their tool box?? Doesn't make any sense.

A 3/8" drive ratchet will only remove the filter drain cap, you still need to remove the housing. The Napa tool is only $9.

But that "special" tool is nothing more than a $5 cup wrench. My stash has a 64 mm which woks great, and I hear the 65mm also get the job done.
Long way from $45 @ Toyota.

That 3/8 ratchet works great on the little disc and removes it well. Problem is, that the body(filter) needs a fluted cup wrench to torque it on @25 Newtons and the little disc (and matching O-ring) gets half that torque amount. Twist and shout.

My exotic cup wrench was $5 , so no extravagance needed.

Do quick lube places charge extra for this style of oil cartridge?
