This question goes out to any Factory Toyota Mechanics in Canada that have installed Cruise Control in a Sedan.
I stopped by the dealer and ask at the parts desk about ordering a Cruise kit for my 2007 Yaris Sedan. He quickly informed me that the ECU needed to be flashed and that I can not perform the install myself.
well i work in a shop at a toyota dealership, not a tech, but an apprentice. i've seen/helped some techs install CC units in corollas and a few yaris' but haven't heard of this yet. i will talk to some of the techs on tues. and see if this is true, it might be and i would hope that a parts person wouldn't lie to you. it comes with instructions of how to wire it up, where to drill the holes in the steering cover and such. i'll try and get a confirmation of this quick.

Thanks for the info, I have taken the plunge and ordered the kit, should be in Tuseday. If you could find out about the re-flash that would be great. When I talked to the Parts Manager on Saturday I forgot to ask about the reflash .. can you belive that
Thanks for the great answer, you have given me some good info!
well i asked a tech today if that would make sense, he said no. i also looked on the installation instructions for the yaris and it didn't seem to say anything about a reflash. the only thing it mentioned was that it might throw a code because you have to take the airbag out of the wheel. other than that i didn't see anything. just check the instructions as you are installing it. and if your airbag light comes on, just get it checked out.

i'll tell you this, i bought my yaris in 02/2007...we had cruise control installed...it took three days...besides just the kit, more than likely you are going to need a JDM wiring harness as that was the hold up in getting it installed...
2007 yaris=made in japan...
and as far as the ecu being reflashed...i gotta take itno service tmw, i'll ask

I spoke to my local Toyota dealership and the part mgr and a tech, and there is no flashign needed for the cruise control install... All that is needed for the install is an alighnment tool for the air bad when the stearing wheel is taken off..
If you take a look at the oem shop manual, it has a section on the cruise control...
I searched around on the web, though I couldn't find a tutorial for such procedure, from what I can figure, it is essentially just an installation of the on/off switch and a clutch switch (Automatic uses the brake switch, I assume).
It would make sense, the throttle is controlled by ECM nowadays, I just don't understand why is Toyota being so cheap and decided not to enable it and make it standard or a cheap option, same goes for the tachometer, in US, if you want the Tachometer, you need to pay 2000 dollar extra to get the S model (Hatch, that is) and it comes with a .... weird looking body kit and bigger tire, everything else is still optional. Cruise control is not even offered on the hatch.
Well, I don't own a Yaris actually, but very interested. So could someone who has done it confirm the procedure?
I looked up the parts, and it's 70 dollars for the on/off switch and 13 dollars for the clutch switch (From toyotaworld.com). The factory manual indicates the CC simply plugs into the ECM and it should be ready to go. So is there a opening for the CC on the steering wheel already? like a plastic cap?
asked my local dealer ( San Diego CA, US). They said the ECU needs to be flashed, and the spiral inside the steering ( air bag wiring) needs to be replaced.... and such, and they say they don't do it anymore, since they were running into electrical problems. this is on a HB. I don't know how much to believe, but this is what I was told by the parts department.
