When I set the car in park, if the rpms are about 1k the car seems to lift when engaging in park.Is this a problem has anyone else had this happen to them.I have a 1997 Rav 4.Thanks in advance.

Yeah...
Your vehicle is engaging reverse as you shift into park. Your R's are up thereby causing your torque converter to be further engaged while shifting. try letting the car idle down first. I am assuming you have a high idle problem as well? Get that fixed and your shifting problem should go away. however if these two issues are unrelated your shift cable may be beginning to fail and that is easily diagnosed by shifting the vehicle with the engine off and the key in the accessory position, put your foot on the brake and go through the gears. If you feel the same resistance your problem is in the cable or linkage.
Hope this helps.
