free v6 mod...

this mod does not require you to spend a single red cent. i was looking at an mr2 tvis system and noticed that a 1mz and 3vz have a similar set up. so i grabbed my spare intake and looked at it. then i noticed a vacuum actuator on a removable plate. so i removed it and saw an air control valve. i didn't know what this did for the car so i read this:

Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS)(v6 models only)
1mz-fe 3vz-fe 2vz-fe

1.The ACIS allows the intake manifold to divert the path of intake air into the combustion chamber. Two air intake paths are provided in the intake manifold to allow the option of the intake volume most favorable for the particular engine speed. Optimum performance is achieved by switching the intake air control valve from either the closed postion(for high tourque at low rpm) or the open position(for maximum horsepower at high rpms).

this information was taken from a haynes manual on page 6-15

well to state where i'm going with this is when they made this thing it wasn't very smooth. so i cleaned it up and rounded the edges so there is less resistance. the effect was amazing at about 3500rpm's i feel the car pull alot harder than before and just to make sure i wasn't imagining it i put my old one back and i didn't feel the same kick.

here are the only tools you'll need:

12mm deep socket
wratchet
wire brush
pliers
dremmel
grinding stones
throttle body cleaner(most be fi safe)

you can do this mod in about 1hr so let's say during your lunch break

1. (this is where you may need the pliers)remove the diagnostic plug and both vacuum tubes.
2. using the wratchet and socket unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the piece in

*these next steps are critical in this working corectly and saving you money and make sure not to remove or harm the gaskets*

3. clean the piece off with the wire brush to remove all the build up.

4. use the dremmel and grinding stones to smoothen the entire thing making it as flush as possible to the valve.

(if your lazy like me you won't polish this thing to a mirror finish but it would be good to do so i myself was pressed for time and had less than an hour so it was a quickie)

5. clean it off with throttle body cleaner or you can just brush the stuff off.
6. put it back on using the same gaskets.
7. enjoy.

this is the only pic i could find right away if you can get a better one please post it and i would like to have pics to help with this mod:

on the passanger side of the intake is what i removed to do thisthere are 4 12mm nuts to remove it's really easy.

better pics from the book:

i just thought about this...this thread should be a sticky

update that helped me get some better response and power out of the car that you can do also.

things you'll need:

1.a tub large enough to submerge your intake plenum in
2. 3 gallons of cheap degreaser(ie: mean green ,simple green, whatever)
3.time

first you'll need to drain the anti freeze.
then remove everything that is attached to the plenum. remove the tb from the plenum cause you don't want to submerge this in the degreaser.
dunk the bare plenum into the tub of degreaser for 5hours.
when you remove it make sure to wear gloves(i didn't and my hands are dry as hell).
the intake manifold should be pouring out blackish brown liquid(that means there should be no gunk left in the plenum)
rinse it out and let it dry.
now remove the fuel rail and injectors.
then remove the intake manifold.
dunk it in the the degreaser and do the same thing you did with the plenum.
the pictures are what i did but i went a step further i grinded down alot to help the flow i've yet to find a place to weld aluminum. oh well.

this is my old intake after i dunked it in the degreaser but it kinda looked like the acis valve...black and filled with sludge.

if you do this i would highly suggest putting in a clear fuel filter on the pvc valve line to the intake manifold and a filter on the one comming from the other valve cover hose that way your intake manifold will stay clean.

Now what exactly are we removing here? Throttle body? Intake tube? Lower air box?

Free power is intriguing but I am having trouble following your words. I couldnt point out the "ACIS" on my engine if my life depended on it.

Please post some pictures of the removal and what we are grinding down!!!!!!!!

^ yes....pictures please! This would definitely be beneficial to V6 owners...

Pictures say a thousand words...or in this case, can mod thousands of V6 Camrys!

i don't touch the plenum itself at all i just grind the piece i'm removing. when you take the nuts out you grind around the valve when it's off the car.

so uh... how do you get the low end torque boost?

im not quite following either... it would really help if you had pics of the actual thing you modified and what exactly you did to it... im not getting it. would this even work on the 3vz?

also tell me more about the gaskets... whats the best way to handle them without getting them fubar-ed?

Agreed, maybe you have some more detailed pictures of the actual thing we are supposed to grind? This is one of the more "permanent" mods I have seen, therefore the line between success and failure is very thin.

Here is a better picture of what we are unbolting (ignore the red circle around the PCV valve)

stock93cam:i got bored and i remebered the tvis system on a 4age motor

TheMajesticking:i had a spare manifold lying around but now cause of you guys both of them are modified.

fair warning though it would be best if you remove the entire plenum and clean it so you can get better results. i didn't but i still noticed a difference and so did my wife and i didn't tell her i did any thing
