Keyway on crank eating pully slot
1991 corolla. For some strange reason the keyway on the crank shaft keeps chewing up the slot that slides over it that is part of the inside diametor of the crank shaft pully. This is the 2nd crank shaft pully and now it's starting to go. I know this is what it is because when I pulled the 1st pully off the slot was about 3 times as wide as the new one. Any ideas? Keyway worn, bad crank shaft bearings? If it is the keyway anyone know if the keyway is removable? Thanks in advance.

the woodruff key on the crank is removeable/replaceable, it sounds like either your pully is out of ballance or your thrust bearings are worn causing too much lateral movement in your crank causing the pully to get pulled back and forth by the belts against the crank

ok, i talked to oneof the masters at my work and he said it could also be, belts to tight, bad crank, crank that is out of balance, one of your main bearing caps could be loose, when the first key way was eaten up it could have taken enough metal off of the crank to make something loose also

Besides tearing everything apart to make it "right", I might try and use some industrial (Devcon) epoxy to try and keep any movement from happening and loosening everything up again, a new key also, maybe even an oversized one that you can file to fit tightly into the now distorted keyway. Maybe you can find something that will dissolve in certain chemicals so you could take if off again if needed.
I had a problem with the crank pulley shearing once on an engine that had been balanced at some local machine shop, suspect that was the problem. |

Thanks everyone. I put on another pully I'll see how this one does. If this one sheers then I'll look into replacing the dowl pin.

I wonder, did changing the pulley again fix the problem or did it still do it? I'm experiencing the same problem. The second pulley, sprocket and woodruff key got worn again. I guess if its a crankshaft problem, the whole engine has to come out huh??

Hmm
I use like a pry bar to keep the drivebelt pulley from spinning and tighten it that way. Tell me, how should it be tightened? Does that even have an effect on the sprocket inside that's holding the timing belt? Cause that sprocket and the drivebelt pulley is eating out inside. Is the bolt applying pressure to the inside sprocket?, cause of course there is the plastic cover between the bolt and the sprocket.

I tightened the pully bolt with an impact wrench now and it seems that my problem hasn't resurfaced yet. Before I was using the impact wrench, the pulley was wobbling, now it spinning straight with the engine running. So hopefully that might be the solution to your problem.
